Rung has centuries of practice in keeping his emotions to himself, but it’s still difficult not to flinch at that. He hates having this sort of conversation.
“I think that’s a bit of an over-generalization,” he says softly, giving a pleasant and indulgent smile. “Perhaps it’s more a matter of time than perspective? I think with enough time, the truth tends to sort itself out. People don’t glorify true ‘villains’ for long.”
He agrees with the man more than he cares to admit, though; he’s seen it first-hand. Here, now, it’s all too easy to condemn the Council and the Senate alike, but back then? Back when their ideals were a way of life and every sign across the city was a reminder of the singular truth of their righteous, perfect rule...?
They were certainly the heroes of their own story, at any rate, even if they were the villains of everyone else’s. Rung sometimes wonders whether they really did believe their own propaganda, or whether somewhere in the back of their processors they knew they were wrong.
...well. It hardly matters what they thought if they never bothered to act on their consciences and change their behavior. There’s no sense in wasting time overthinking the past. It’s hard not to, though, when presented with such a grand statement as the difference between good and bad.
Rung hates having this sort of conversation.
“What about your story?” he asks, gently guiding things back toward his conversation partner as he usually does when he doesn’t really want to express his own opinions.
“I’d love to hear it. Do you think if you were to tell it, you’d describe yourself as the hero or the villain?”
