So we did this thing in class the other day called “The Miracle Question”. It’s basically a guided visualization that attempts to help you connect with your values and desires, by instructing you to imagine a ‘perfect normal day’, 10 years in the future. It takes a long time -- 30 minutes at least. You are guided through the process of conjuring up images, smells, sounds, situations, context.
My perfect working day took place in the house I live in now. I ran a small private practice that was housed in my back yard. In the middle of the day I took the bus into town to collaborate with some local business leaders on some vaguely community-oriented work. I came home, made dinner with my partner, and sat at a dining room table with my son while we talked about his day in 3rd grade.
It was surprising to me that the perfect life I imagined for myself was so simple. It feels good to know that all I really want is to work with clients, give back to my community, and love my family. It feels like a validation of the work I’ve done to get to this point, to see that I really am on a path toward the life I want.
It was also a little funny to me that in my ideal future, where I’ve given myself everything I want, I still travel by bus.
