A forgotten deportation, a family archive, and the cost of belonging.
What happens when a town deports nearly 1,200 people—and then never speaks of it again? In today's new Longreads essay, Masha Hamilton returns to Bisbee, Arizona, where in 1917 a posse of 2,000 vigilantes rounded up striking miners and drove them into the desert by cattle car. Her great-grandfather escaped over the mountains. The family never spoke of it.
Names. In a town that had sorted her family with slurs and lists, keeping her name was its own small strike. It was her way of saying: We are here, and we are not done yet.
Read Masha Hamilton's powerful essay, "Vigilantes at Dawn," on Longreads.

Three miners 850 feet deep in the Hubert Mine, Nevadaville, Colorado, 1895
TFO Megatron is illiterate.
I had this idea about TFO. So in real life caste systems, especially medieval and back, most of the lower and lowest castes are mostly or completely illiterate. So, miners are the lowest ranking caste and their only job is to mine and follow orders.
After Orion becomes Optimus Prime (and effectively the supreme leader of cybertron) he puts time and resources into educating the ex miners and himself. However, Megatron basically only has himself and the high guard as resources. He's not about to admit to any of these power hungry nutjobs that he can't read.
The high guard has no idea since they weren't present in Iacon during Sentinal's reign. They just assumed their fearsome leader can do something as basic as reading.
To avoid being caught, Megatron acts like it is below him to read his own messages or write them. He commands Starscream to do it like a medieval king commands a squire to write his decrees.
