In the early 1800s, a man is sent away to prison for some unfair reason, doing physically and mentally demanding work for 10+ years, so much so that it changed his demeanor and appearance forever. He returns to the land he came from with a new attitude and a new position, and plans to rescue his daughter figure from the tyrants holding her captive.

Eventually, the daughter meets a handsome young man who falls for her at first sight, and vows to stay with her forever. The two begin a romantic relationship through secret meetings when the daughter’s father figure is away, but it only becomes more obvious that the daughter cannot be with him due to obligations to her father figure.

Throughout the entire story there’s a definite theme of classism, with those on the bottom fighting the oppression of the higher class.

Somewhere in there is a sketchy thief of a woman, played by Helena Bonham Carter, and an equally sketchy scam artist of a man, probably played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Later on in Act 2 there’s a bit of a bloodbath that involves a disguised loved one being tragically killed and only being revealed when it’s far too late to save her.

But the daughter and the handsome young man get away and presumably live happily ever after, and the musical ends with the main man accepting death and its inevitability.

Now: what musical did I just describe? 

Pretty obvious that it was Les Mis, right?
