Then things get gross

Vivian Whitmore gives us some information that’s very interesting.

• She dated Mickey for 5 years, presumably the years he lived in Moon Lake, PA 1926-1931/very early 32

• She has a friend visiting who is 5 years older than she is

“Don’t do the math, sweet stuff. You’ll hurt yourself.”

Well lady, I’m doing the math.

Exhibit 1:

Vivian’s friend is Eustacia Andropov, a character in The Final Scene. Nancy knows her and, incidentally, Eustacia shares her age. She is 96.

Given that Eustacia is 5 years older than Vivian, that makes Vivian 91 in 2002 (when the game was released). This means she was born in 1911.

Exhibit 2:

Mickey Malone’s age is also given. According to his obituary, helpfully collected by everyone’s favorite Park Ranger for Nancy’s perusal, Mickey Malone died in 1941 at the age of 52. This means he was born in 1889.

This means Mickey was not only 22 years older than Vivian but he was 39 in 1928 and she was just 17. Even worse, it is heavily suggested that they started dating when she was 15 or 16.

In this picture, taken at the end of their relationship when he was arrested for unrelated criminal behavior in January 1932, Mickey (center) is 44. Vivian would have been 20 or 21.

No wonder he kept birch beer (a typically nonalcoholic soda similar to root beer originally produced commercially in the US by Barq’s) on tap just for her.

Michael “Mickey” Malone The Hole-in-the-Floor gold heist. Well. I’ll be be darned. Truth be told, when Mickey told me he was the who pulled off that heist, and that he’d buried twenty gold bars at Moon Lake, I didn’t believe him. I thought he was making it up. See, Mickey and I were on the outs by then. I thought he was just trying to entice me to come back. But if he told Willy the same thing, maybe there’s something to the story after all. ... But I just figured he was playing games, trying to lure me back with mystery and intrigue. I told him to buzz off. Maybe I shouldn’t have.

Legend goes that when Malone was finally arrested and hauled away, his four dogs went running off into the woods and were never seen again. People would just hear ‘em, howling like their hearts were broken, every night, until one by one, they all died and went silent. But every time someone tries living in the Malone house, back they come.

Vivian Whitmore (née Burnett) Mickey and I dated for five years. Oh, I knew what he was and I didn’t approve, believe you me. But I was young, and we got along so well, and he was also so considerate. He always kept birch beer on tap at that speakeasy of his just for me.

William “Willy” Ackers He was Mickey’s most trusted employee. Mickey treated all of his other men like dirt. But not Willy. He honestly liked Will. Respected him. Trusted him implicitly.
