The flaw in your reasoning concerning the living in a totalitarian state is as follows. You cannot anticipate all the possible hardships and bad results caused by your decision of today, since there exists no known matrix of “payment” in such a situation: the official law must not of course say a single word about all the real harassments, awaiting the nonconformist. You must simply do what you think to be the best or the worst of the given case, and the rest belongs to the general unpredictability of all possible following events. No total rationalization is therefore possible. From other similar cases you will not extract any definite knowledge, since the situation being what it is, no case is truly similar to another; so there you have the free place for the play of imagination, and even if you will experience some unpleasant event, you will not be 100% sure, that THIS is the obvious result of your being nonconformist yesterday. This unpleasant event can be a pure coincidence too. Because of this, you can never be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN of anything. The less terrible the threat, the more we tend to judge a man who buckles under — you say. But this threat is always to an unknown degree determined by your subjective evaluation of the situation.
