TW DEATH, MURDER, GORE

The six o’clock news the night before had begun like any other, the CNH News introduction music playing and reporter Choi Jinhong waiting for his cue. As he shuffles his papers, however, the feed fades to a brilliant shining gold, the silhouette of a lynx replacing a human figure. For a moment, the sound distorts before a clear, fabricated voice begins to speak in a delicate, confident tone. 

BREAKING: MPD BREAKS SILENCE ON EXECUTION TOLLS

After extensive ongoing investigations and visits to affected businesses, the MPD have confirmed 121 fatalities and 56 remain seriously injured in the overflowing Myeongcho Hospital as a result of June 14th’s execution riots by Hydrus. Furthermore, a total of 18 businesses in the city are closed indefinitely in order to repair damage and care for staff. 

On June 14th, Hydrus took to the streets of Yeongi for a public execution of their former Second-In-Command Drifter. While his body lay bleeding out, members of the cruel gang began a reign of terror over the city, destroying cars, raiding buildings and taking hostages. Many MPD officers were injured whilst protecting civilians and numerous patrol cars burnt or smashed beyond repair, though the MPD would not reveal exact numbers for either. Of the 121 fatalities, the majority are believed to be gang members, not only of Hydrus itself, but their many rivals, too. MPD are currently in the process of getting in touch with all victims families to identify bodies. If you have not seen or heard from a loved one since the riots, they encourage you to get in contact with them to aid the process. 

The MPD offer their support and condolences to everyone affected by the riots. They have set up a helpline in partnership with Yeongi Community Centre for anyone to call if they are struggling to cope with any loss or trauma following the events.

[ +2,150, -403 ] mpd worked hard. considering the span of these riots and how big hydrus is, they did really well. rest in peace to all the victims and a speedy recovery to those still in hospital or recently discharged. I hope the families of those affected are okay. 

[ +1,892, -322 ] I called the helpline last night. my brother is still in hospital and I needed someone to talk to. my parents are in pieces. the community centre volunteer was really kind and talked to me for so long even though they probably have so many callers at the moment... I owe them everything. if you need someone to talk to, I definitely recommend it. 

[ +896, -178 ] mpd visited my workplace. we had to evacuate during the riots and the whole front window was smashed up and loads of stock stolen but we’re reopening next week... couldn’t they have given me some time off? TT

[ +543, -293 ] at least the mpd are trying... it’s really tough, though. the gangs are so powerful. kind of strange to think that I’m grateful for the other gangs fighting back against hydrus. it’s almost like they were protecting us even if just for a day. it’d still be better with no gangs, though... 

if there was one thing grim hated, then it was a treacherous snake like drifter. all these men who had given their lives, shed blood for their gang, their family, just in vain because of one single man. when lynx broadcasted, grim had been out, out as woo dohwan, on his way to a business meeting. he had been relaxed, there was nothing special about a meeting outside of his office, it was a routine task to fulfill, and the world was like before, until the monitor in his car that showed a upcoming news show, suddenly changed picture. his eyes were drawn to it, when the colours of the screen fade and were dipped into a shining gold before a silhouette of a lynx appeared from the background.

dohwan frowned his eyesbrows, signalling his driver to stop the car for a moment, in order for him to see the full message of one of the hostile gangs. he leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest as the voice started to speak. what was this whole ruckus about? silence filled the car, silence filled the space outside, when the words fell. the male clenched his fist so hard that his skin turned white. his whole body shoke in rage, he was fuming in anger. "drifter, that bastard!" his betrayal was unforgiveable. he had to pay for it. death wasn't enough to make up for his sins.

the heart in his chest was in an uproar and dohwan punched the leatherseat of his car. with a jolt he slammed open the door and snarled at the driver to get lost. without another word he hurled him out of the driver's seat to get behind the steering wheel himself. through a few touches on the display of the front, the executive vice president called his secretary to postpone the appointment due to a emergency. not waiting on his secretary's reply, he ended the call and kicked the gas pedal. he needed conformation on this shit.

she shouldn't be so ecstatic about seeing qian. qian hates her – but that's just the thing, isn't it? jinah knows better than anyone that qian is the best liar in the world. better than her. she sets the bar for liars all over the world and that's why she's so good at lying to herself, too. jinah knows that qian wants her, loves her, adores her, because there are no two people like them. not here, not in this island, and certainly not in the world. any thought of competition was stupid on her end; she can see that now. if qian is happy to keep the lie going then jinah will encourage it, but for now, she's happier to ignore that and go straight to her.

after all, that woman is the only one who has ever understood, and only because they're cut from the same nasty cloth.

she really should have taken her friends’ warnings more seriously. they’d warned her to be safely home, locked in by eight thirty in preparation for the riots outside and she had listened, really. when she left the house, it was barely eight, so she’d have plenty of time to get to the nearest convenience store and back for milk. except her nearest five convenience stores were all closed and she got caught by her neighbour on the way out, so by the time she spotted a place in the distance that was actually open, it was already twenty-eight past. she could have run back, hoped to make it out of the rush or find an alternative, quieter route, or she could find shelter elsewhere. 

in her panic, she did neither. she unknowingly ran headfirst into the open space, only catching a flash of the traitor’s body before king swung his blade and her eyes slammed shut in horror, her own body frozen as the world around her erupted into chaos.

it’s before business hours, but weijun spends more time at the grotto than in his own home anyways. the news had been playing softly in the background, a stream brought up on his computer as he worked through payroll and food and drink orders for the week. a manager’s job was truly never done. but that was when he had heard the news, and the response not too long later from hydrus. without a second thought, he had called minah. come in here now, he spoke in a clipped, cold voice, one she would recognize and know that he’s urgent and desperately trying to hide that fact. 

he didn’t speak again until she arrived and he could speak to her face to face.

“call everyone in tomorrow night. whoever can show up.” she must have heard the news, hadn’t she? she works for a hydrus affiliate, how could she not know that the second in command was a damn snake and was being beheaded at dawn? weijun swears in his native tongue as he looks over his staff lists. why did so many of his people take themselves off the schedule tonight? don’t they know that he needs them here, that they’ll be safe here in the wake of the destruction that will rain down upon the island?

he glances at minah, an old friend, a trusted ally. “we’ll need extra security. they’re all going to be high and horny off of blood and adrenaline and i won’t have my girls getting hurt because of it.” though he absolutely won’t close up shop either; tomorrow night could very well be a record profit if it goes as he suspects. hydrus soldiers, bragging of their conquests, coming to a known safe place to drink and celebrate. it’s a shame he can’t trust them to behave.

tension makes weijun stiff, far stiffer than his usual languid self. he stands, hunched over his desk, again scanning down the lists of names. will he have to take someone off the staff list permanently after tomorrow? god, he hopes not. he’ll send them all out an email tonight, maybe even a text. stay locked in your home or come here. those are your only two options. weijun may not be the most sympathetic man in the world, but he cares for his own.

the sounds of bloody murder still rung in his ears.

he still doesn’t know what had happened earlier; this morning seems like a drunk haze. he definitely remembers his body moving, shoving past countless others as he reached out to grab a hand. and then his legs were off, propelled on an escape. every other time has been a want, but this time it had been a need.

he’d needed to get out of there, he’d needed to find some place safe. but his years of experiencing the streets reminded him that those places were rare; most places were never safe. they were lies, looking like a haven, but there was nothing much between them and a wall full of bullet holes of someone really wanted to.

the safest place was to keep running, to not stop.

he’s paused a few times since the morning, in spaces he’d gathered was good enough at least for a catch of breath. but trouble always came. riots were happening, rippling out from the site of the execution, and gangs were out in full flair. fuck that, if he was gonna get himself caught up in all of it. a couple of times, he had nearly gotten caught up in it all. those measley underlings called ‘soldiers’ had confronted him on two occasions, out to get anyone in their paths just ‘cause they could.
