thinking about how lausus was doomed from the moment he was born because he was born the son of a hated man and he could not change that. you’ve got a bunch of people like tarchon and evander and pallas and aeneas all on mezentius’ ass and the etruscans were basically destined to fight mezentius for a second time considering that they had a whole ass prophecy stating so. obviously they would want to fight lausus too considering that he was mezentius’ son and it would therefore be safe to assume that he would be loyal to him.
evander wasn’t really hated by a lot of people in italy for the entirety of pallas’ life up until he allied himself with aeneas, meaning that nobody really gaf about pallas for most of his life. nisus and euryalus provoked the rutulians into killing them by killing a bunch of sleeping rutulians at night. lausus didn’t even need to do anything for people to want to kill him his entire life because the name of his father would already be enough.
lausus’ fate was inherited because the hatred of other people for his father also led to their hatred of him, increasing the chances of both of them being killed. you’ve literally got people like evander cursing out mezentius’ bloodline and this curse actually came to fruition.
Why did Mezentius do all that
herodotus stating that in peace sons bury their fathers and in war fathers bury their sons vs evander stating that a father should not outlive his son and mezentius asking if a father should be saved by the wounds of his son
almost every father in the aeneid died after their son did except for anchises and aeneas and only ascanius survived out of all the youths in the aeneid

it doesn’t matter if the blood on your hands was not spilled by you
HOLY SHIT AM I HALLUCINATING OR IS THAT HIS ACTUAL CORPSE
YOU CAN SEE HIS HAIR AND BEARD BRO THOSE ARE NOT JUST BURLS. THEY PROBABLY DISMEMBERED HIS CORPSE IN THIS PICTURE TOO CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT HIS LEGS AREN’T THERE
YOOOO a lausus fan??? mezentius is one of my personal favorites and i think its so cool you like lausus TELL ME WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT HIM
to me he’s a symbol of redemption in the aeneid which i find pretty interesting!! Here’s how:
- Mezentius was known for his cruelty but then you get his son which Virgil portrays as quite likable (e.g. by stating that he deserves a better father which implies that he’s at the very least not that bad of a person) which shows that there was some hope for the royal family of Etruria to be less oppressive and get a redemption arc if Lausus lived
- Aeneas didn’t manage to save Pallas despite treating him as his own son and wasn’t able to prevent Turnus from looting shit off his body which Aeneas obviously opposed and I’m sure felt guilty about. So when he comes across another pious son that died for his father he probably felt pity for him because Lausus reminded him of a son he couldn’t save!! He knows there’s nothing he could change about the whole Pallas thing but he knows that he can at least give Lausus, who he may have seen as a foil to him, the respect Pallas’ body didn’t get by not stripping any of his armor off him. To Aeneas Lausus is a second chance Pallas gave him.
- When Lausus dies Mezentius actually feels regret for his actions because he realized that they’ve affected his son by putting him in danger as well as tarnishing his name. He goes on a suicidal rampage as a redemption arc for Lausus
I also find his similarities to Pallas cool and I’m sure they would’ve gotten along under different circumstances 😕 the fact that Turnus killed Pallas to save Lausus too
