Since Arthur was born from magic, he never had the power of magic like merlin, but he had the ability to do magic only by chanelling Merlin's power by touch. So Merlin started teaching Arthur many tricks.

Arthur was amazed by it. Slowly, he started to accept his own truth and looked to magic differently ever since he knew that merlin was a sorcerer.

Merlin was in so much pain n grief that he stayed in his old-man form after Arthur died Perhaps it's his way to mourn his love. Perhaps he felt that life isn't worth living anymore. Perhaps it's his way of punishing himself because he felt it was his responsibility to protect Arthur and that he failed. Perhaps he made a promise to Arthur that he will not return to himself until Arthur returned to him.
