What if Elyan happens upon Ealdor during his travels? I personally place him at one or two years younger than Leon but for shipping purposes, am making him younger than Gwen. So he’s around Merlin and Will’s age a year before canon.
For comedic purposes, he gets a job helping Simmons, and is witness to Merlin being a goof and accidentally revealing his magic.
Which then causes Will to posture in panic, and Merlin spiraling bc his mother is def going to have his and Elyan’s asses if he threatens to tell, completely missing that bro is trying to assure them that he doesn’t care until he takes his hand (which felt really nice but we aren’t talking about that rn) and places it over his heart.
And then he makes a vow?? It was really corny, but sincere and Merlin felt his magic sing at it, so he relaxes and Will grunts until he takes in that they really don’t have to worry about Merlin annihilating anyone trying to drag him away.
And then Elyan just… stays. It surprises everyone, including himself bc leaving was his thing, and while he told Merlin he wouldn’t blab, he was still from Camelot, and he had a lot of things to unpack as he learned. He was supposed to explore.
But, he felt at home. With Simmons’ awkward praise and annoyed grumbling at Merlin and Will, with the doting the duo’s mothers graced him with that made him ache.
With his growing friendship with Will that gets more interesting by the day as they hoard or gang up on Merlin, and with his tender realization that he and the sorcerer would never be just friends, and it had started when he slipped his hand into the other boy’s that one day.
