Something I don't think I've seen anyone talk about enough is the discussion on classism and the struggle of suddenly being in a different class SPECIFICALLY with Morgwen
Actually, Gwen deserves EVERY good thing in this godforsaken world. Rewatched season 1 and remembered just how great she is. Awkwardly sweet, bravery at its finest, quietly observant. This show is driven by a lot of heart and she is no exception.
I just can't get over how (spoilers) the golden age, from the very beginning, had to truly start with her ruling Albion. Arthur and Merlin were caught in this ourobouros cycle regarding magic and justice. They were simply unable to escape the patterns Uther set up. Gwen's common sense and fairness of judgement sets her up to do what Arthur, as part of the old guard, would never be able to to do...unless Merlin had told him he had magic earlier. But Merlin put Arthur (the destined king and arguably love of his life) always above his allegiance to those with magic and, ultimately, everyone paid the price for that betrayal of himself. From my perspective, Arthur and his golden age was a red herring all along. GWEN DESERVES ALL THINGS GOOD. I JUST LOVE HER SO MUCH. Also I DO see Morgwen in season 1. I honestly ship both Argwen and Merthur because both are so good. Argwen is so beautifully sweet and Merthur really provides an entire angst Thanksgiving dinner.
ship bingo for arwen (arthur x gwen) and merlin x freya
Oh you picked good ones!
arwen:
I love them SO much! Their relationship was built up so nicely, and they love each other so much. Trope-wise, they're an amazing mix of chivalric/courtly love and modern love stories, because there's pining and forbidden love but they're also friends
freylin:
While I don't love them quite as much as arwen (mainly because there's just so little of them), I do love them quite a bit. Despite their relationship developing fast, they make sense together (and their scene in The Coming of Arthur made me emotional ngl)
Thanks for the ask! ❤️
There’s a scene in The Dark Tower I can’t get out of my head. Where we see Arthur standing in front of a small mirror on the nightstand, looking down and twisting something between his fingers, just before Merlin comes in.
What I find so fascinating about this scene, is his complete inability to look at himself. He can’t face himself as the realization that Gwen has been torn from him again sets in.
In so many ways, she is his mirror. She’s the steady presence that helps him reflect on all his decision-making, the good and the bad. She’s also a reflection of all the things he strives to become as one of Camelot’s rulers. To not have her, means to lose something integral to his own understanding of himself too. So he outright refuses to look, at all.

Thinking about how even when Arthur was under the love spell for Vivian he was still looking for Gwen's approval and trying to impress her.
