The Participation Trophy Generation
"Participation trophies" weren't created for the generation they were given to. They were created to appease the generation before them. Who had been told by their previous generation that they were "the best" and "the brightest" and felt entitled to those monikers for the rest of their lives. This promoted a massively competitive spirit in the generation. They couldn't ALL be "the best" so since SOMEONE had to be "The best" it MUST be THEM. They competed with each other in business "We have THE BEST ___" and "BEST ____ in town!" They wanted to prove how much better they were than their own peers. Their generations created competitions in their yearbooks growing up. "Most likely...." "Best ____" And it carried over into adulthood. They competed for the "best" parking, the "best" car. They were fueled by an economy that preyed on promoting this behaviour. Two generations grew up being told if there wasn't a "best" then you were nothing. They instilled this in their parenting. "My child is an honour student at _____" they pushed these ideas on our generation. "Be the BEST" and somewhere along the way, they had our generation competing for their egos. They pushed us into competitions to prove who had "the best" child. Taking credit for the work put in by the children. "Well my child was THE BEST ___" and "My child got FIRST in ____" They complained when their children weren't WINNERS because they had been instilled with this idea that there are WINNERS and LOSERS and if you're not a WINNER you're a LOSER. Anyone who didn't win was a LOSER. Their child that didn't WIN was a LOSER. Which made THEM a LOSER. And they would not. Could not. WOULD NEVER stand to be a LOSER. THEY, after all, were WINNERS. But the problem came when they couldn't ALL be WINNERS.... if it's a contest, if it's a competition... some people lose. And so... to appease the generation of WINNERS trophies were created. New rules were implemented. "No! No losers! There's no LOSeRS anymore! Everyone's a WINNER! Yaaaaaay." They assured everyone their children were WINNERS. Just like they wanted. They gave them trophies to lourde over. To show off. A pretty piece of trinket to appease the WINNERS.
While children understood the game, that there was no winners without losers. It appeased the WINNERS... the ones who insisted on proving that they were right. They had to WIN, because they weren't LOSERS.
"The Participation Trophy Generation" Isn't our generation. it's the generation before.
Who's WINNING now? Who's obsessed with WINNING and not being a LOSER? Who's giving out the participation trophies to the WINNERS?
... Eat the rich.
My fuckin smartass mouth got the best of me again today.
I failed my Geometry test (again) and I went to the after school help (again) and my geometry teacher said to me:
“If you stop believing yourself, you’re going to end up on your mother’s couch for the rest of your life; is that what you want?”
And I fuckin said:
“If it ever gets to a point like that imma do a backflip off the roof and see if I can finally land on my own two feet.”
I can’t get a referral to the therapist again.
Older People In My Family That Complain About Millennials
I have watched you quit jobs because you didn't like the monotony of your job where you sat down all day doing minimal tasks. I have watched you go months without a job because you could get food stamps and sell them as long as you worked a few hours every few months. You have filed for disability while still working under the table doing hard labor. You called me entitled for wanting affordable health care. You called me lazy because I don't clean every day, because I don't cook every night. I have walked sixteen miles to get to a job where I have been verbally assaulted, where I have been spit on, where I have been sexually harassed. I was called irresponsible because at 23 I was on food stamps for 3 months. I have went days without eating because I had bills due. I had pneumoniae for three months because I couldn't afford health insurance and had to choose between my power or my health. I lost power for a week during a snowstorm while I had pneumonia because I had to choose between cough medicine and having enough to pay my power bill. I stayed in a house that is missing windows because my landlord wouldn't permit us to fix them for liable reasons, but wouldn't fix it themselves. I had pneumonia for four months with broken windows without power during a snowstorm, that should never been a normal thing. It should have nerve been the best option. You call me stupid for not moving. I have to pay 50 to 75 dollars for an application, my husband has to pay another 50 to 75 dollars for his. This doesn't guarantee us a spot, but on top of that fee we have to have roughly 1000 dollars for down payment and first months rent. Then there is the 500 to get necessities turned on. That doesn't include the cost of moving. So let me get a better understanding, millennials are lazy, stupid and irresponsible. Yes I want affordable health care. Yes I want a living wage. Yes I want to be able to eat. These are not wants though these are needs or they should be. I know they are necessities but they get treated like wants, especially food. When it comes down to a roof over my head or food in my stomach I am going to choose shelter. I have worked 7am to 10:30 pm only to be up at 5 am to go back to work. So if am lazy tell me please what you think a hard worker is. I have never seen you keep a job for more than three months, but I have pushed myself to passing out because I was working 13+ hour shifts, walking 16 miles one way to work and not having time to eat. I am not diabetic but keep glucose tablets in my purse since my blood sugar drops after a few days of pushing my body past its breaking point. I work my husband works. I have went to work with a fever of 104 because I couldn't miss any more days.
