In A World With No Happy Endings...How Do You Pick Your Poison? || Meifen || Trial 6.5 || RE: The Architect
For a while, that single tear that had escaped Meifen's grasp was all it was. A single slip of control. A simple piece of misplaced liquid. The static began to fill her head again, but this time she wasn't afforded the luxury of split-second hearing loss.
This time, she was listening to the entire thing.
That thundering of her heart only grew sharper and more painful as the details of their situation was laid out to them. As expected, this entire scenario was much bigger than all of them. Hell, it was even bigger than the individuals who were orchestrating this standstill they had all reached.
Every person here, from the Akito the King, to Amora the Knight, to the murderous Bishops and their victimized Rooks, all the way down to the pitiful Surviving Pawns who had pushed past all the others and now stood at the edge of the board looking back at the carnage they had just narrowly avoided.
In the rules of this game, pawns who reach the end of the board are granted the luxury of becoming Queens. Queens can move in any direction they please. They should be able to choose their own destiny...
But what was the point of choices when no matter how well you consider your next move, only checkmate will await you in the end.
They had won this 'game' but there was no prize to be wrought. Instead, all that awaited them were existences where they would never be the same. They would never be free. Both Hope's Peak Academy and 'Himiko Holdings' had assured that this surviving group would never know the likes of freedom again...
And maybe that's what finally ripped away the strength Meifen Jiang had built up until this moment. This time, she didn't even bother to try and stop herself. Again, what did it matter...?
"T-This isn't a choice that changes much a-aside from whether you live or die."
She croaked, her voice broken and unstable.
"W-Whether we choose t' execute you o-or spare your life - you a-and the academy have robbed us of our futures. T-There's no longer a place for happiness here. T-There's no longer a reason to hope..."
Removing her glasses with a stilted motion, the Speedrunner stares at The Architect like a wounded animal. That's all she was, right? A caged, lacerated. lab rat.
"D-Do you really think Hope's Peak Academy will let us l-live our lives at peace if we killed you and left? I-If what you said is true, w-we'll b-become their puppets too i-if we weren't already. T-The media will hound us a-and pry into the survivors o-of this game in their sick sense of curiosity a-and desire for profit."
The girl lets out a shaken breath that comes across more as a sob.
"I-If we save you a-and stay here, I-I'm leaving my dad behind. I-I'm leaving my friends, m-my family's source of income - all of it. A-All of it b-because you involved u-us in something that none of us w-wanted t' be apart of!"
Even as she yelled across the courtroom to the man on the throne the anger swelling in her tone was less directed just at him and more at this entire situation. Biting back another sob, Meifen bows her head and holds herself. She doesn't care anymore how the others look at her. Nothing really matters.
"...Y-You and the academy have ruined our l-lives. H-How are we supposed t' choose w-which is better? I just w-wanted to be normal... W-Why can I never have a n-normal life...?"
The majority of supernatural cases Meifen investigates occur in her home city. Occasionally though, she may receive a case in a rural area- one of the many solar power generating villages. As well as holding most of the farmland to produce food, these villages are generators of much of this world’s energy. Roof tiles are solar panels and each window is a transparent solar cell. Meifen’s investigations in these villages present different problems to city investigations. Village communities can be insular and certain villagers resent city people interfering in what they feel is their business alone. Such people may refuse to aid her or to be interviewed or in worst case scenario, may even mislead or sabotage her. This distrust may stem from the city’s micromanaging of rural produce- animals shown to have certain diseases will be confiscated and slaughtered, electricity production is monitored to the watt and if actual production figures don’t match up with what is expected, there’s bound to be trouble.

This Is Already A Bloody Mess | Meifen | Trial 4.1 | RE: Akito, Yoon, Emberto
As the days went on, Meifen felt all of the energy in her body leaving her more and more as they were forced to stay here. It didn’t help that, no offense, almost everyone left alive was some color of walking human disaster (except for Alma, maybe. She hopes). The mention of the bloodied corn dog being eaten barely even shocked her at this point.
Gods above, she's so tired.
Removing her glasses and pinching the bridge of her nose with both hands, the mouse tries to push away the general agitation she now felt around the class. Memories of their last experiences in this trial room fills her with a sense of bitterness, but also determination.
They can’t mistrial again. It’s not an option they have with so few numbers.
“…Well, l-let’s actually talk about the states of the two bodies? T-That’s a better place to start, though the corn dogs are good to note, Mikage-san.”
Maybe she’s lost all of her vigor, or simply the willingness to deal with half of the room, but her manner of speaking is no longer as sporadic and rushed as before.
“Kaito, uhm… F-From just looking at the body, t-they look like they were strangled because of a thin cord or fabric of some kind around their neck. I-I can’t be sure if that’s a decoy or not but… y-yeah”
[Kaito’s Neck] There’s a thin, even red line across Kaito’s neck.
Scratching at her head, Meifen stares thoughtfully down at the stand.
“Yuna… I think it’s okay to conclude she was dragged a-along the roller coaster tracks, s-somehow. There’s bloodstains o-on the side of a-and on top of the ride… M-Maybe they were drugged an’ then set up like that? Either way, I-I would imagine they’d had t’ be incapacitated or even already dead t-t’ be hooked onto that death trap.”
[Blood Splatters] There seems to be a ton of blood splatter just to the side of and on some of the roller coaster tracks.
She pauses. In a way, Meifen’s almost praying that was the case. It would make the deaths a smidge less cruel…. a smidge being the key word.
“I-I dunno why she was dressed up like that portrait though. I-It doesn’t make much sense…”
I’ve never been really into writing OCs in fanfic, but Mighty Oaks has called for it... and now I’m really attached to all of them, as you can tell by the fact that I check in with Kenji at the beginning of every chapter.
Do you have a favourite, and why is it Zhi Ruo?
