The worst part about coming back from an interview is the feeling that I left a part of myself behind at the places I interviewed. Every time I come back, it feels like a part of me has fundamentally changed. Although I'm sure that I've changed for the better, it is so strange to think that just 3 days can make such a huge impact on who I am.Â
Of course, it doesn't help that interviews = lots and lots of stress. Which means I'm surging with a bunch of stress hormones. And coming home means that I'm not in hyper-stress mode. So the post-interview crash sucks a lot too.
Ehhhhh I want my energy back. and I want to not be weirdly jet-lagged. and I want to not be tired and feeling like complete shit.Â
One thing about interviews though. Every time I get back from one, I feel like I've grown up, just a little bit more. The first interview made me feel like I want to be a smarter, more informed person. This second interview made me think about what I want out of life, and how to balance what I want out of life with what I want out of a career. With every single time I meet new people who are like me, or who were like me several years ago, or who are traiing people like me, I feel inspired to become, just better.Â
And maybe, one day, I'll get to be the person I hope to be now.Â
So, I didn't fall in love with Oregon the way I did with Iowa.Â
Oregon is a great place. It's absolutely beautiful, with some very nice, very great, very supportive people and faculty, and it would be an absolute joy to be a part of their program. I'm sure I would get a quality education and training there, and it would prepare me for what I want to do with my life.Â
But it's not the place for me, and I don't think it's a place that looks for youngsters like me, who go to MD/PhD straight out of college. It's a place for adults, and they made it clear from the first hour I spent at the interviews.Â
And I don't think I've made the cut to be an adult there. I'm too young. Too green. I'm life is not settled down enough to make Oregon my home.Â
I would love to be a part of Oregon school, and as much as the school loves green things, Â I don't think the school is looking for green youngsters like me.Â
On the plane back from Portland and Md/PhD interview. Though the people I met were absolutely great and fantastic and very caring, Portland and the interview were a miserable experience. Really not feeling the Portland love right now. More on this later.
