Chapter 1 : In the Quiet Between Courses
â
"In all honesty, she should have been grateful for his restraint, shouldnât she? He had given her a way out â an exit from this dangerous situation. Permission to return to her âperfectâ fiancĂŠ swimming in gold. To the life her mother had orchestrated with such care.
âAnd yet...You are the first person in this entire wretched arrangement who has made me question whether I ought to be honourable. Whether taking what everyone calls the dishonourable route â following my own desires, making my own choices regardless of consequences â might not actually lead me somewhere I could feel truly honourable.â

Hello matsutzu & readers! By following this story, from the index here, youâre agreeing that you ship Fox with Peppy, because screw age being a barrier with adults, and more importantly, itâs got that satisfaction for underrated cravings.
Anyway, continue on ahead if you want some Peppox romance! And enjoy!
[MED BAY/PEPPY]
Through some brighter corridors of the ship, Fox strolled along until he reached the door with a keypad for the medical bay. He knocked and it opened quickly after. It opened to a gray and brown hare that grinned to him.
 âHey there, Fox!â
 âHi Peppy. Need any help?â
 âWithâŚ?â
 âInventory, right?â
âHa, you did know.â Peppy chuckled. âYou make a great leader, Fox, knowing what your team is up to.â
âAh, I donât know all the time, Peppy,â admitted Fox. âFalco is especially a wild card.â
âTrue, but thatâs more on him than you,â determined Peppy. âBut you do more than well enough when I think it over.â
âPeppy, youâre going to make me blush.â
âGood, youâll actually be a true red fox!â Peppy chuckled and wrapped an arm around Fox. âCome on in, it shouldnât take too long. Iâve logged everything, so itâs just some sorting to take care of.â
Foxâs eyes darted back and forth a bit; the medical bay only had a few first aid kits laid out on the two beds. Peppy slipped his arm from Fox, walking to the bed on the right and placing some bandages back in a cabinet near the bed. Fox watched as Peppy bent down, pulling out a small antibacterial tube that fell between the two, and dropped it into a drawer. He turned back as Fox shifted his attention to the bed.
âJust need some fresh sheets on the other bed, these kits put away, and we should be all set.â Peppy sighed as he turned back to the first aid kits. âYou think theyâd be more generous with selling us these, considering we saved Lylat a few times over.â
âNo such luck.â Fox smirked, as he walked to the closet. âSheets are in here, right?â
âYep, you take care of those, and Iâll get these on the shelves.â
âOh, I wasâŚdonât you want me to lift those?â
âFox, Iâm old, not feeble.â Peppy picked up a silver kit, and carried it over to the storage shelves. âThe heaviest are the gold boxes, and we only have one new one.â
 âOnly one?â
âSadly, yes.â Peppy pushed the box up on the shelf, and turned back to Fox. âCouldnât exactly afford more, given their cost. Itâs a shame, given that they have the best supplies for missions out in the field.â
âYeah, thatâs lousy.â Fox pulled out blankets with the sheets, carrying them back to the bed. âDid we have any here?â
âJust a few, maybe weâve got five or six now.â Peppy picked up two of the green first aid kits, carrying them to the shelf. âSounds like a lot to the merchants, but thatâs hardly enough for missions.â
âThat just means weâll have to make more on our next one,â decided Fox. âOr pick up some odd jobs to get extra funds.â
âNot a bad idea,â agreed Peppy.
Taking the sheets from the bag, Fox pulled it over the mattress, tugging it around the near corners first. He reached across to pull it over the far corners, but pulled it out of place from the other side. Gritting his teeth, Fox tried again, tucking the sheets tighter. He lifted the mattress and slid the blankets and quilt underneath, pulling the rest over the top.
Turning back around, Fox picked up the pillow, but blinked as Peppy stared at him. Rubbing his chin, Peppy chuckled.
âYou look like you were struggling a bit, there.â
âIt wasnât that bad.â Fox shrugged, shoving the pillow in its case. âItâs justâŚa bit of a pain.â
âGalactic hero and top pilot, bested by some bed sheets.â
 âVery funny.â
âHey, that sounds like a good time to me.â
 âHuh?â
âAh, nothing. Here, let me help.â
Taking the pillow from Foxâs hands, Peppy turned it and shifted it back into its case. He fluffed it a bit, placed it onto the bed, and then smoothed out the crooked sheets.
 âSee, there we go.â
 âYou make it look easy.â
âHa, I had to figure it out when this team first formed,â reminisced Peppy. âJames was a nightmare at sorting out anything delicate, thatâs for sure!â
âAnd here I was hoping I only inherited his piloting skills and good looks,â joked Fox.
âNo worries, Iâll keep this one a secret between us,â teased Peppy. âYour father wouldâve gotten a kick out of this. Your mother, not so much.â
âYeahâŚâ Foxâs smile fell as leaned against the bed.
âNo, I love it when you tell me stories about them,â Fox insisted. âI just wish I had more time with Dad and even got to know Mom.â
âThey were great people, Fox,â assured Peppy. âI wish I could bring them back for you, just give you three a dayâŚâ
âIt would be nice,â agreed Fox. âBut, youâre enough. Iâm glad I have even you.â
âAw, Fox, Iâm notâŚthank you.â Peppy rested his hand on Foxâs shoulder. âAnd Iâll always be around when you need me, I promise.â
 âRight back at you.â
âCome on, let me just enter in the logs on the computer here, and weâll get a pick-me-up after,â decided Peppy. âIâm sure weâve got some tasty treats in the fridge.â
 âCarrot cake?â
âYou all get a kick out of me liking that so much, donât you?â
âAlmost as much as doing barrel rolls,â mocked Fox.
âAnd Iâm never going to live that down either,â murmured Peppy. He sighed as Fox laughed. âAlright, let me just enter the records in from the tablet.â
Peppy walked to the desk in the corner of the room, picking up the tablet and typing in on it. Fox followed, and peeked over Peppyâs shoulder at the results on the tablet. Swiping up from the tablet, the results were transmitted digitally and added to the logs on the computer.
âLooking pretty well-stocked overall,â decided Peppy. âLetâs just save, close this, andâŚah.â
Fox blinked as Peppy hurriedly tried to close the next window. He was too late, with Fox having spotted court documents, specifically words on âfiling for divorce.â Leaning back, Fox raised an eyebrow as Peppy turned back, ears drooping.
âUh, I, ahâŚI forgot that was up.â He weakly chuckled. âThat can be a secret too.â
âWait, Peppy,â Fox shook his head, âwhatâs going on with you and your wife?â
âThat would be âex-wife,â as of this morning,â disclosed Peppy. âVivian and I, uhâŚwell, weâve had our differences over the years. AndâŚnow we wonât.â
 âButâŚbut Peppyââ
âI didnât really want any of you boys to worry about me,â interrupted Peppy. âShe didnât like me on the team, even now, and itâs gotten to a point thatâŚâ Peppy sighed and shrugged. âA point where I didnât choose her.â
Silently, Fox stared into Peppyâs dark red eyes, as the hare drummed the desk beside him. He stood up from his seat, but Fox barely moved away.
âLetâs just forget about that, andââ
âNo, Peppy, I-I canât.â Fox shook his head again. âI canât believe you didnât even tell me, I couldâve given you time offââ
âSure you couldâve. I didnât want it.â Peppy placed his hand back on Foxâs shoulder. âShe doesnât make me happy, Fox. Itâs been years, and weâve both known that for a long time about each other. But, thatâs true.â He chuckled. âVixy thought we rushed our marriage, and I never wanted to admit it, but she was right. Your mother was sharp like that.â
 âStillâŚâ
âFox, I promise you, itâs fine.â He gently massaged Foxâs shoulder. âThese things happen to us. We can fall in love, we can think that we did, and we can fall out of it too. I happen to be on the latter end of it.â
âPeppyâŚI canâtâŚI feel like this is on me.â
âListen, Fox, Iâm not going to repeat myself all night.â Peppy rested both of his hands on Foxâs shoulders, gazing directly at him as Foxâs pulse quickened. âItâs. Not. On. You. None of it is any fault of yours, ok? I chose this life, Viv and I both chose the divorce, and thatâs the end of it all.â
âYou deserve to be happy, though,â managed Fox. Peppy opened his mouth, but Fox placed his hand over it. âI know, I know. But if she didnât make you happy, what does? This team canât be everything.â
âIt does the trick,â persisted Peppy as he moved Foxâs hand. âTaking to the skies, keeping the peace, working with you boysâŚthatâs plenty for me.â
âButâŚitâs justâŚâ Foxâs shoulders dropped, and Peppyâs hands slid down along them. âI donât like picturing any of you alone. What if thereâs a day that Star Fox doesnât need to be? Then whatâs next for you?â
âIf I make it that long, Iâll build the bridge when I get there,â decided Peppy. âI donât think thatâs a day coming for me anytime soon.â
âThat only makes it sound harder and lonelier on you.â
âYouâre here, arenât you?â Peppy chuckled, patting Fox again, as the leaderâs cheeks lit up a bit. âSo long as Iâve got at least you, Fox, thatâs good enough. If I can help you build a better future, so much the better.â
âThank you, but you deserve to enjoy the future too,â Fox insisted. âSomeone should spend it with you.â
âThere isnât anyone looking for an old hare like me to enjoy the years with,â joked Peppy. He paused and rubbed his chin. ââŚWell, maybe, but Iâll have to look into that.â
âDefinitely, there are definitely others that would be interested in you, Pep.â
âOh yeah? Know any secret admirers of me, then?â
Chuckling again, Peppy hands slowly slipped from Fox, who quickly grabbed them. He stopped and blinked, as Foxâs hands trembled.
âAre you feeling ok, Fox?â Peppy pulled his hands from Foxâs, clasping his hands on Foxâs arms and watching him carefully. âYouâre shaking, your face looks pretty red, and you sure feel warm.â
 âUmâŚPeppy.â
 âYeah?â
ââŚUhâŚâ Fox swallowed hard. âWhat ifâŚwhat if I did know of an, um, admirer?â
 âNo fooling?â
 âNope, IâmâŚcompletely serious.â
âHuh.â Peppy chuckled. âGuess I canât be too old yet, eh? Ok, Fox, you tell meââ
âItâs a guy.â Fox blinked and studied Peppyâs face. âIs thatâŚa problem?â
 âAhâŚw-wellââ
 âYes, then.â
âNo! No, thatâsâŚFox, I happen to, uh, likeâŚâ Peppy shifted around and rolled his head. Quickly, he finished, âGuys interest me too, like girls, in that way, there.â He sighed, his cheeks slightly flushed. âI think Iâve blabbed too many secrets to you tonight.â
âHow about I share mine, then?â Fox shuddered as Peppy blinked at him.
ââŚWait a minute.â Peppy shook his head. âIâm old, not daft. FoxâŚâ Peppy frowned, adjusting his spectacles. âLook, I donât want to assume anything, butââ
âItâs me.â Fox clenched his fists and shrugged. âPeppy, IâŚI, uh, I likeâŚIâd like to be with you.â
Both stood in silence, as Fox lowered his head and stared at the floor, his face becoming bright red. Peppy shifted his weight around, first a little away, and then back toward Fox.
 ââŚThis isnât a joke, right?â
 âNo.â
âFox, IâmâŚIâm a lot older,â protested Peppy. âYou, ah, you shouldâŚyou know, be with someone closer to your age.â
âMaybe,â relented Fox. He shook his head. âBut IâŚI know what I feel.â He looked back up at Peppy, who lifted a hand toward him, but hesitated. âPeppy, IâŚlook, I knew you had a wife, but lately, IâveâŚI donât know, carried a crush?â Fox dug his hands in his jacket pockets. âI just figured that Iâd neverâŚI didnât think youâd ever be remotely interested in the idea, let alone available.â
âYou kidding? Fox, youâre handsome and adorable.â Peppy smirked. âI, ah, I didnât think Iâd ever admit this out loud, but, uh, well, itâs a recent development for me too, butâŚâ He inhaled and heavily exhaled. ââŚMaybe I kind of, you knowâŚthought your father was, umâŚcute. And, now that youâre an adult, seeing youâŚreminds me of him, in some ways.â
âOh.â Foxâs shoulders dropped. âThatâs notââ
âHang on, hang on.â Peppy rubbed his hand across his mouth. âI donât mean that all I see in you is him, when Iâm talking like that. Itâs justâŚhe looked good one way, and youâreâŚhmmâŚâ Peppy cleared his throat. âIf I were some years younger, Iâd definitely be chasing after you, I admit it.â
âButâŚwhy is my age an issue?â Fox scratched his arm. âWeâre both adults. By a lot of years.â
âTrue, butâŚcome on, Fox, me?â Peppy gestured to his figure. âLook at this. Iâm old, Iâm fat, and Iâm not exactlyââ
âYou have some muscular build,â pointed out Fox. âYou can keep up with us on foot.â
âW-well sure, butâŚâ Peppy dragged his hand over his head and ears. âYou can do a lot better, Fox.â
âPeppy, to me, you are better.â Fox softly smiled. âYouâre brave and wise, youâre kind, and youâre loyal and supportive. Even if you donât think it, I definitely find you handsome.â Peppy blushed harder, coughing in an attempt to hide it. âI mean, yeah, you knew me as a kid, but youâve spent more time with me as an adult, andâŚI just, I guess I was hoping that maybeâŚâ Foxâs ears lowered back. âForget it, I donât want you to be uncomfortable.â
âAh, thatâs notâŚthatâs not what Iâd call it,â admitted Peppy. âYou told me yourself, youâre far from a kid, I havenât looked at you as one for years, so I justâŚIâd like it if you were absolutely sure about it.â
âDefinitely.â Fox beamed as his ears lifted. âDoes that meanâ?â
 âThis is a bit fast.â
 âOh. Well, yeah, I-I didnâtââ
âNo, itâs fine.â Peppy smiled and shrugged. âFast, but Iâd be a complete liar if I admit that I didnât like where itâs going. Fox, IâŚyouâre a fantastic leader and pilot, and Iâll be bold enough to think that youâll be legendary some day, if youâre not already. Youâre sweet, caring, and understand your teammates better than even they realize.â He lifted his hands, flinched back, and paused. âI justâŚwait, kids.â Fox raised an eyebrow and Peppy shook his head. âWhat about your future, Fox? Youâre thinking all about me, but what about starting a family, orâ?â
âIf youâre not opposed to it,â intervened Fox, âIâŚI mean, we donât have to, butâŚyou and I could, if youââ
 âYou want kids with me?â
âYeah.â Fox shrugged as Peppy pinched his upper lip, tugging at a few strands of gray fur. âA family with you sounds fine, when weâre ready. And weâve got options. Technology advancements are, well, you can make, umâŚâ Fox shrugged again. âOr we could adopt. OrâŚor we could do anything else.â
âAnything, huh?â Peppy smirked. âAnything with me?â
âYes.â Fox sighed. âAm I missing anything, orâŚ?â
âHa, wellâŚyouâve taken down my biggest reservations for you,â confessed Peppy. âAndâŚmaybe I steal a few glances at you, more than I should, andâŚmaybe they werenât all friendly, depending on how you look at it.â
 âGeez, Peppy.â
 âSee, see? You told meââ
âI do the same to you, too.â
âOh. âŚOh.â Peppy grinned. âYou really do like me, huh?â
âHow else can I spell it out for you?â
 âOne more way.â
Peppy raised his hands to Foxâs cheeks, and the two gazed into one anotherâs eyes. They slowly closed the distance between them, their lips pressing together. Fox lifted an arm under Peppyâs, wrapping around his back, while Peppy scooped him in closer. Kissing for another moment, they separated and breathed heavily.
ââŚWow.â Fox laughed. âIâŚthat was great.â
âHehâŚnot too old for that,â joked Peppy. His hands trailed down Foxâs sides and rested on his waist. âYou, um, you want to keep that a secret too, orâŚ?â
âHow about we decide on that later,â suggested Fox, rubbing Peppyâs back. âRight now, I just want to enjoy the night with you.â
âThatâs fine by me.â Peppy kissed Foxâs cheek, and stayed close to him. âWhatever you want, Fox, thatâs fine with me.â
âWell, I do want you.â Fox smirked. âSo, that works.â
They embraced one another, chuckling a bit before remaining still for a bit. Managing to separate themselves, the couple chatted for a little while longer, flirting in between, before leaving the medical bay together.

please do be careful, i worry the people will misuse your kindness; iâve seen so much misuse of kindness.. please protect your heartâ i love you so achingly much.
but i know your heart even tho youâll say i dont⌠iâve tasted it before, iâve felt it on nights sleep was too far out of reach.
it must be hardâ to once have been so used to the silence, only to be thrust somewhere unknown; i can only think of your safety, your well-being.
i am foolhardy at best, my love touches everyone, everywhereâ even me, in places i cannot reach.
take each breath as it comes, and if they come too fast, remember to ground.. put both feet on the floor and close your eyes and remember the earth as it used to beâ not as it is.
the world can be a very scary place, i understand thisâ and when it gets too scary, please remember who you are â not who everyone wants you to be⌠but you!
May-December budding friendship or modern-day flirtation?
Yup. This is about a girl, a woman, and I am so confused. The backstory is brief. I started a new job working at a small community grocery store. Itâs a grocery store, a community hub of sorts actually, and Iâm a checker and she is a regular. I donât really know anything about her and yet I feel like I know her well because she is open and, well maybe that is what is happening. She is open.âŚ
Five movies about young men in love with older women.
Harold and Maude. D: Hal Ashby (1971). Harold, a death-obsessed 19-year old (Bud Cort) falls for a concentration-camp survivor and cheerleader for life, Maude (Ruth Gordon) in a romance thatâs as much goth/hippy as May/December.

American Pie. D: Paul Weitz (1999). Okay so sex with an older woman isnât all that shocking in a movie where a character has sex with an apple pie. But DUDE! Sheâs Stiflerâs Mom!
The Piano Teacher. D: Michael Haneke (2002). A college student (Benoit Magimel) steps into an affair with his sadomasochistic teacher (Isabelle Huppert) leading to much weirdness all around. Huppert is as disturbing as she is revelatory.
