Swamp Thing: Final Payment (#84, March 1989)—Rick Veitch (writer), Tom Mandrake (penciller) & Alfredo Alcala (inker)
I’ve been itching to share these for our community re-read of “Into the Night” (#15).
Some of you might recognise these panels, but not everyone has read Swamp Thing (or watched the one season they gave us), and this is the first and only time Morpheus appears in it. So for those of you who don’t know and always wondered who Matthew was before he became a raven, here comes a bit of background info (spoilery, so skip if that’s not your thing):
I still don't know how people knew Matthew the Raven from Sandman was Matthew Cable from Swamp Thing
The 2019 TV series of Swamp Thing is now available (for a limited time) to watch for free on Tubi.
What makes this significant for Sandman fans is the show had a version of Matthew Cable as a character.
Matthew Cable is the man who dies and becomes Matthew The Raven in The Sandman.
They even went back and added a scene of Matthew dying in the final episode because this was around the time there were early talks of adapting The Sandman into a Netflix series.
Obviously he's played by a different actor here than he is in The Sandman, mind you. Tubi is only available in the US so if you are outside of the US make sure you turn on your VPN and set it for a USA location.

Matthew the Raven
I spent the last couple days reading up on as much of Matthew’s pre-Sandman comics history as I could access. Matthew came into Sandman as a character with a honestly rather sparse 17 year publication history. He had been one of the central characters in the original 1972-4 run of “Swamp Thing,” had a three-issue appearance in “Showtime” with the Doom Patrol, and then been brought back into the revived 1980s “Swamp Thing” for a relatively brief period (issues 17-31) before being stuck in a coma until he becomes Dream’s raven. This has a fair amount of body horror, alcoholism, implications of incest, and spousal abuse typical of a 1980s adult horror comic.
Lieutenant Matthew Cable worked for Defense Department Intelligence and was assigned to protecting Alec and Linda Holland while they carried out their DoD-funded research on the “bio-restorative formula.” He first appears in issue 1 page 3 of “Swamp Thing.”
That’s him in the back with the black hair.
