โPrez! Over here!โย
Your nickname cut through the hallway, followed by the hand wave he was doing alongside a smile. Some students who were there glanced, waving less energetically than Yujinโeveryone knew you as the 2 time class president. You pulled your bag higher on your shoulder, waving through clusters of lovely outfits, mostly ignoring the flyers taped on every wall: cram school promotions, mock exam countdown, โjoin the clubโ posters already, and one for a half-torn band audition, the ink smudged like whoever put it there didnโt even care.
Due to being the last first day of school, you spoke to the school headmaster to have permission to drop the uniforms and wear an outfit, which allowed you to be the only student to give a motivational speech in the gymnasium, but seeing how everyone was comfortable showing their identity through clothes, despite the already packed senior schedule that we will face ahead.
Senior year wasnโt going to be kind; the past students let you all know that.
โThatโs a cute outfit.โ You playfully did a princess bow, the outfit that you pulled the night before consisted of a white collared button-up shirt under your fitted, long-sleeve blue sweater, covering perfectly your exposed abdomen that your denim mini skirt showed. It was cinched in with a chunky black belt and some white socks with black shoes with a little bit of heel.ย
โThank you, Yujin. You donโt look bad, either.โ He spun dramatically in place, making his backpack bounce.
โPlease. My mom picked this outfit. I had to wear it, otherwise she wouldnโt let me go to our karaoke tradition.โ He opened his backpack, pulling out strawberry milk.
โYouโre the absolute best,โ you said, stabbing the straw through the foil and taking a sip without hesitation.
โSo, how was your vacation?โย
โIt was good. I went to the beach for a week before going to visit colleges with my mom.โ he gave a dramatic sigh.
โShe is more obsessed with your future than you.โ You raised your shoulders, way too used to his words.ย
โWell, sadly, I have to go along withโโ
โYah, Han Yujin!โ The wall made that scream bounce, creating an echo where the two of you froze. As a matter of fact, everybody there did; you saw the unforgettable figure of your friend Leeseo running to you two, and you looked to your right to see the face of pure fear on Yujinโs face.ย
โWhat have you done?โ you whispered, before he could speak. Leeseo was already trying to hit him. His hands went to your shoulder, and he started using you as a shield.
โLeeseo, stop!โ you gasped, trying to wriggle out of Yujinโs grip.
โOh, hi there, Y/N. Can you please move? I want to kick his ass.โ It was comical how everything was going down, cameras shutting off as they captured the first banter of the duo. You decided to enter the class, and a spot near the desk and next to the window was your favorite.
โLeeseoโouch! Wait!โ Both of them entered as she finally left him alone after she gave a pretty hard smack on his back. Leeseo sat next to you, and Yujin took the spot behind you two.
โYou idiot, why didn't you tell me that Martin is back?!โ Her whisper made your ear raise at the name.
โI didnโt spend time here; I went to the countryside to visit my grandma. How do you know?โ
โBecause he was getting scolded by the teacher at the entrance.โ
โNothing new, then,โ you spoke before you could think. You placed your pencil case and notebook on your desk. Leeseoโs mouth fell open, her eyes wide as if what you just said was the dumbest thing ever.
โNothing new? Y/N, he was supposed to go to Canada for his senior year; he even spoke about it.โ
โNow that you said that,โ Yujin put his strawberry milk on his table, leaning between you two. โYesterday, when I was leaving out to do the groceries for mom, Martin and his dad were discussing it; it looked pretty heated.โย
โOh great, the menace is back.โ You keep your eyes focused on what you were writing in your notebook, which consisted mostly of a to-do list of the day.
โWhy do you act like this news is a normal Tuesdayโs cafeteria menu?โ
โBecause thatโs exactly what it is. Martin gets in trouble like he has been doing for the past couple of years, the teacher yells, and the earth spins. What else is new?โ
Yujin chuckled, โCareful tho. Keep talking like that, and he might think you missed him.โ
You whipped around, smacking the back of his head with enough power to bother him. โDonโt even joke.โ
People kept entering the classroom, some were going straight to their friend group, others to get ready, and a few simply lay on the desk to sleep for a few minutes before the usual first day announcement.ย
You grabbed your small makeup pouch so you could go to the restroom, standing in the middle sink and smiling at your polished reflection. Pulling the gloss, you painted your lips with a thin layer of gloss, the mascara was next to give volume to your eyelashes, and finally, some blush on your cheeks.ย
When you were satisfied, you left the bathroom, fixing your pouch, crashing with someone, and dropping everything inside them, you could bet your blush was broken into pieces.ย
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," you said, bowing as you rushed to at least some of the remains.ย
"I can't believe the school role model is wearing makeup, breaking the rules already?" you sighed, still picking up your stuff, your mood completely dropping.ย
"I take that back, I'm not sorry." You finally got up and looked at what was supposed to be Martin's height last year, your neck hurting slightly as you looked a little more up. Leeseo was right, he got unbelievably tall.
He was wearing a band tee with ripped jeans that looked twice his size, hanging on his hips like they were holding on for dear life. Scuffed Vans dragged slightly as he shifted his weight, the hoodie unzipped and frayed at the sleeves. His hair looked like heโd rolled out of bed on purpose, and the faint smirk tugging at his lips only made it worse.
The outfit made you know that he would be the reason for your headaches for another year.
โMartin Edwards,โ you said flatly, clutching your pouch like it was armor.
โStill bowing to people in hallways. How cute,โ he drawled back, his smirk spreading slowly with his hand shoved into his hoodie pocket.
โStill getting yelled at by teachers on the first day. How predictable.โ You stepped sideways, but he shifted too, blocking your path with a lazy lean against the wall, watching you close your eyes, irritated.
โYou know that I canโt help it if theyโve missed me.โ He tilted his head. โDonโt tell me you didnโt.โ
Your laugh came out louder than intended, calming down quickly. โPlease. The place was finally quiet without you.โ
โQuietโs overrated.โ You could see how his eyes flicked down, lingering on the glossy shine of your lips, making you look down briefly. โBesides, you look better with noise around.โ
He leaned in slightly so you were the only one hearing. โCome on, Prez. Admit it. You missed me.โ
โI miss the news of you moving to Canada.โ You scoffed, you looked at his eyes, and you could see how that challenging look disappeared for a second.
โDamn.โ He pressed a hand over his chest like youโd shot him. โStill ruthless with the comebacks. What happened to the sweet, polite, and lovely person?โ
โSheโs still here, she just doesnโt like you,โ you shot back, already making your way out. He appeared next to you, the height difference even more noticeable. You stopped on your tracks, him copying you after.ย
It was your turn to step forward, your chin high, although it didnโt make you look intimidating. โYouโre going to make this year miserable, arenโt you?โ
โDepends on how much attention you give me, pretty,โ he said easily, the nickname rolling off his tongue like it was nothing, turning the tip of your ears slightly warm.
Before you could say something, the bell overhead rang, echoing through the hallway. The students started invading the hallways, brushing past the two of you with curious eyes.
You exhaled, finally brushing past him to go to your class to hide the pouch, coming back to see him waiting outside the class. โIโm making one thing clear. Give me some free time for our teachers scolding me because of you, I donโt want that on my record.โ
You marched your way with your class, heels softly clicking.ย
โCanโt promise that, Prez!โ His voice followed you down the hall.
It was official, this was going to be a long senior year.
Four months passed like a blur, and just like you predicted, everything stacked up to you. Not even a week in, and the classes and teachers nominated you to be the president of the school council. You were about to give up that opportunity for the sake of a slightly peaceful year, but when your mom heard about it, she forced you to keep it, not turning back even when your dad tried to talk her through it.ย
The school was quick to give you a list of activities you and the committee had to plan, and because of your last events as class president, students were quick to say the same sentence.
โWe are having a prom AND a school trip? Y/N, youโre the best!โ
Normally, the country itself wasnโt exactly used to having a prom the way other countries did, renting movies to watch on a Friday night was enough to plant the idea in every seniorโs head, even yours, not believing that you were the one supposed to make it happen. Thankfully, the first big event on the calendar wasnโt promโbut the spring school trip.
With the help of Yujinโs mom, we secured a short trip of two nights in Gyeongju for the last week of October.ย
It was 7 pm, and you were walking back home with the rented DVD of 10 Things I Hate About You, ready to drown in ramen and your blankets. The reason? You were tired of council meetings, study schedules, and Martin already racking up three warnings from teachers.
โWhy are you in pajamas?โ Leeseo surprised you by being in front of your house.ย
โBecause Iโm staying at homeโฆ?โ Your sentence sounded more like a question than you wanted it to, especially because Leeseo was standing at your gate with her backpack.
โWrong answer,โ she said, shoving past you. โYour mom thinks youโre staying at my house for a study-slash-sleepover. Iโm telling you, she almost hugged me when I told her we are even reviewing college math problems.โ
โWhat? Leeseo, Iโm in pajamas. I bought snacks! Iโm committed to my bed tonight.โ
โYou can change, and the snacks can wait.โ She plopped the backpack on your bedroom floor before going straight to your closet, pulling out outfits that seemed fitting to fool your mom even more. โIโm not letting you waste your Friday night watching Heath Ledger for the 100th time.โ
โShut up.โ
She threw your pink cardigan in your face. โCome on, your mom needs to see you leave like we are going to church."
ยท ยท โ ยทโถยท โ ยท ยท
โCall me if anything happens, okay?โ You nodded at your mom before she lightly hugged you. โThank you for doing this, darling. I know you will match my babyโs commitment to college.โ
Leeseo bowed down while you tried to hide your face, your head by lowering it. โAnything to get that 100, I will bring her tomorrow!โ
You two started walking out, feeling the gaze of your mom behind you. โWhen we turn around here, Yujin and his brother are waiting for us.โ
And just like she said, Hanbin and Yujin were there, opening the car right when they saw you two. โWere you two creating a summer season collection?โ
โQuiet, Yujin. Hi Hanbin,โ you said. Hanbin simply smiled at you.
โWhere now, to our house?โ Hanbin spoke, this time looking at Leeseo.
โYes, we need to change her clothes,โ you said, looking at her, confused.
โBut why? I think itโs cute.โ You looked down, a pink polo shirt layered under a pastel cable-knit sweater, khaki skirt, and pearl studs.
โDonโt get me wrong, it is cute, but it looks like you will hold a mass on the dance floor.โ Now you laughed, already feeling at ease when the wind touched your face. โAnd then to Martinโsโ
Once again, the mood turned down. โWaitโMartin? As in Martin Edwards?โ
โYes. Keonho texted me, and he said his momโs gone, and his band has their amps set up in the garage. Apparently, half of the schoolโs going.โ Yujin said, and thatโs when you looked at Leeseo, who was actively trying to avoid your face.
โOh my god! I love this song, turn it up, Hanbin!โ she screamed.
The car ride to Hanbinโs house wasnโt long. Yujinโs house was empty when you arrived. Leeseo didnโt waste a secondโthe soft outfit was already in her backpack, so you can wear the black cropped baby tee with a rhinestone butterfly, a pleated low-rise denim skirt, and a chunky studded belt. Your makeup is slightly altered with the use of eyeliner, but since it was a style you have secretly wanted to try for a while, you enjoyed it.ย
Leeseo opened the door of Yujinโs room. The second you stepped out, both brothers gasped. You rolled your eyes with your face burning at the attention.ย
โNow that outfit is the one that will take your mom to a coma,โ Yujin said. Hanbin punched him softly, and you simply laughed.ย ย
It took a few steps to arrive there since they were neighbors, and the bass from the garage was already rattling the pavement. Cars were parked crooked along the curb, kids were sitting on the front lawn with red cups, and some of them, who you recognized as graduates, were drunk.
โThis looks safe,โ you muttered. Leeseo slipped her arm through yours.
โRelax, itโs just a party. Besides, Martinโs band is playing. It will be good.โ
You rolled your eyes. โMartinโs band will probably sound like three lawnmowers in a blender.โ
โThatโs kind of the point.โย
The smell of cheap soju mixed with hairspray lingered in the air; there were some Christmas lights strung along the ceiling, casting the whole space in a warm glow. You moved between people to grab something to drink from the table.ย
โNoona?โย
You turned around, half-expecting another stranger with either a can of soda or a red cup. Instead, it was Keonhoโwell, another version that was surely not the one you used to watch on council meetings.
It was almost comical the way your eyes widened at the same time, like you were looking at two entirely different people from the ones youโd last seen in pressed uniforms.
โ...Keonho?โ you blinked, scanning him from head to toe. โWhat are you wearing?โ
Baggy jeans sagging low on his hips, showing a part of his boxers, a chain clinking against his belt loop, oversized sneaker, and a graphic tee layered under a half-zipped hoodie. His gel-free hair was messy, kinda like he came out of an MTV music video. He looked good, you had to admit.
Keonho gawked back at you with the same disbelief. โMe? Noona, look at your outfit.โ
Heat rushed to your cheeks, suddenly becoming hyperaware of your fit.
You crossed your arms defensively. โAt least I donโt look like I lost a fight with my closetโฆ but you look good, I guess.โ
He laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. โFair. But stillโฆ wow. Didnโt think you could look like that. It suits you.โ
Before you could thank him, the garage speakers squealed as the music turned down. Keonhoโs grin widened instantly. โAnyways, you have to come listen. Cortis is next.โ
You arched a brow. โCortis?โ
โThe band I joined!โ he said, a happy smile showing his pride. โJames is on drums, Juhoonโs rhythm, Seonghyeon on keys, Iโm bass.โ
โOh, all of you sing?โ you asked, following his steps to the garage.
โSometimes, but the main singerโโ
โWhatโs up, School of Performing Arts of Seoul!โ Martin's voice resonated all over the place, the crowd screaming in response.ย
โKeonho.โ
โI know you donโt like him at all, but listen to us for a moment, we practiced a lot.โ he did a small pout, you had to nod to see him smiling, and run to his bass.ย
You scanned the group, eyes stopping on Martin, his guitar strap slung low and standing front and center.
โThanks for being here. Weโre Cortis, and we will do something old since classics never die.โ
They surprised you by opening with a familiar riff of one of your favorite bands, blink-182. โAll the small thingsโ made the whole garage shake with the force of it, and you had to admit itโit didnโt sound half bad. They were all completely lost in their performance and interacting with people in the crowd who were busy nodding their heads and screaming their names.
The song ended, and the five boys were sweat-slicked and breathless, quickly grabbing a can of soda to quench their thirst. Martin left for a moment, arriving soon after to connect an acoustic guitar to the amps.
You audibly gasped when the familiar melody hit your eardrums. โWonderwallโ.ย
You moved through the crowd to get a clearer view, spotting Leeseo and Yujin by the first rows, both singing along dramatically the wrong lyricsโyou didnโt mean to reveal your love for rock music there, but after securing your spot next to your friends, your body moved first, soon the lyrics easily feel off your lips like youโd been waiting for that exact song all night, far away from your mother.
For the first time, you let yourself loose. They werenโt perfect; the performance itself was pretty raw to the point that the energy could be felt all over the place. Martin looked up mid-chorus, eyes landing on you. You could see how his eyes opened at the view of you enjoying the chaos he was creating. It felt like the noise dimmed, even just for a second, before he went back to singing his heart out.
The night stretched on with more covers, every single one better than the one before. Eventually, the closeness got too much, making you slip through the crowd and push the back door open, stepping outside after grabbing a can of soda. The cool night air hit your face like a relief, although the sound of crickets filling the silence that the muffled music left behind wasnโt exactly your cup of tea.
You exhaled, leaning against the side of the house, closing your eyes for a moment, finally feeling a little sense of peace after what was probably the longest year so far.
โYou hiding, Prez?โ
You startled, spinning around to see Martin also leaning against the railing, hair damp with sweat, a crooked smile painted across his face. Even outside, he carried the same reckless kind of confidence that made people look twice.ย
โNot hiding,โ you said flatly. โJust avoiding the noise pollution.โ
โFunny that you say that, knowing how much you enjoyed back there.โ His smile grew at the sight of you trying to play it cool.
You scoffed lightly, crossing your arms. โDonโt flatter yourself. I was justโฆ surprised you didnโt completely butcher the songs.โ
โOuch.โ He chuckled, pushing off the railing to stand a little closer. โYouโre tough to impress.โ
โThatโs not new information.โย
For a brief moment, he didnโt say anything โ just looked at you. โDidnโt think Iโd see you at one of my shows,โ he said, quieter this time.
โMe neither. I didnโt think youโd still be here,โ you said, the words coming out before you could even stop yourself. โWasnโt Canada calling your name?โ
You stood there waiting for a silly comment like he always does, just to see your irritating face. But there was nothing but silence, and you were smart enough to know you messed up.
He let out a soft laugh, a bitter one. โYeah, it was.โ
Your silence was a cue for him to continue, which even made you question why you suddenly wanted to hear the rest.
โMy dad wanted me there, to finish high school there, the same high school he graduated from,โ he said. โSaid itโs โset me for the future.โ, but while he was setting me up, he was setting someone else up too. In another country.โ
You froze, for the first time, not having an answer to talk back.
โMy mom knew,โ he added. โShe knew the whole time and justโฆ kept living like nothing happened. So I decided to stay with the person Iโm less angry atโwhile making him angry enough that I like music.โ
"He wanted you to be something else when you graduated?"
"Electric engineer. Just like him, so I can help with his company."ย
You suddenly remember the article that the principal showed one time โ Edward Industriesโ CEO invests in youth innovation โ and the photo of Martinโs father shaking hands with people, smiling like his world was perfect.
โThatโsโฆ a lot to live up to and process,โ you said quietly.
โWell, you know Iโm not great at following instructions.โ His lips twitched, but his usual smirk didnโt quite form this time.
You took a sip of the last part of the soda, swallowing it. โWhy are you telling me this?โ
โBecause I know you hate me enough to not care.โ
Your breath caught at the way he said it, like it wasn't a joke, but that stung a part of you. You look at him and, for the first time in your eyes, he doesnโt look untouchable or smug. He looked tired.
โIโm so sorry, Martin,โ you said softly.
โDonโt be. Iโd rather be here playing and producing music with the boys and annoying you.โ
You let out a small laugh. โYouโre doing a great job at both.โ
โY/N! Are you here?!โย
You both turned toward the sound of Yujinโs scream echoing faintly from the other side of the yard. Flashlights from someoneโs phone swung through the dark as your friends searched for you.
โYour friends are calling you,โ Martin said, stating the obvious. You ran a hand through your hair and twisted it into a messy low bun. He watched the motion quietly, cheeks warming before he could stop himself.
You met his gaze again. โGood night, Martin.โ
โNight, Prez.โ He added, finally smiling a little bit.ย
You started to walk away, then paused mid-step to look back over your shoulder.
โI donโt hate you,โ you said. โI just hate that the only thing that damages my school profile is your warnings.โ
He let out a chuckle, for real this time, his mouth now doing his familiar grin. โThen I guess Iโm doing you a favor. Give your rรฉsumรฉ some personality.โย
You blinked, completely caught off guard, before a laugh escaped you, making his grin widen.
โHey! Donโt laugh!โ he said, though the lack of bite in the tone betrayed him, too focused on the happiness that you radiated outside the school.
From a distance, Yujin called your name again, his voice half-drowned by the music. You turned to glance at the noise, still smiling as you stepped back.
Martin stayed where he was, hands shoved in his pockets, watching you go, putting his hand on his chest to calm it down a bit at the sudden racing of it.
ยท ยท โ ยทโถยท โ ยท ยท
Sitting again at your desk felt like hell. The summer break had been a blur, and what you wished to do the mostโrelaxing, catching up on your TV shows, and simply not thinking too much about high schoolโwas replaced by college prep books and an endless to-do list dictated by your mother. You manage to sneak out with Leeseo and Yujin only once.
Long story short, you were practically glued to your desk. So the return to school felt more like a choker pressing even tighter around your neck.
โYou guys wonโt believe what I just saw!โ Yujin entered the room, slamming the door closed before running to your spot.
โYujin, tone it down! Drink some.โ You gave him your water, practically chugging it down to ease his thirst.
โThank you, I came here running as fast as I could.โย
โCouldnโt tell." The sarcasm in Leeseoโs voice made him narrow his eyes at her. โSay what you saw.โย
Before he could, the door slid open again, and a collective gasp rippled through the classroom.
Martin.
But it was Martin wearing the school uniform properly. Key word: properly. White shirt tucked in, tie actually knotted, blazer neat. The only nods to his usual style were a thick, silver ring on his index finger and the slight, purposeful messiness of his hair that framed his face.
He dropped his backpack onto his usual seat in the back, then strolled casually toward the front to grab a new syllabus. On the way back, he caught Yujinโs eye.
โMorning, Han, Leeseo, Prez.โ he nodded coolly, taking a seat on the empty spot.
โThatโs what I saw,โ he whispered, wide-eyed.
Far from being discreet, Leeseo was already studying Martin, who was playing dumb and doing random poses. โI hate this. Bring back your โI hate the systemโ attitude right now. Thatโs my only entertainment in this school.โ
Martin looked up, grinning. โCanโt. Iโm going for the rebrand. Gotta keep the audience guessing.โ
You kept your eyes fixed on your notebook, pretending to write down something important, and you were hyper-aware of the space he occupied beside you.
Then came the knock on the wood right next to your pencil case. โDo I look good, Prez?โ
When you finally risked a glance at him, it was enough to have the class eyes on both of you, especially his bold yet teasing stare.ย
โYou look like a normal student. Congratulations.โ
The bell rang, and everyone began shuffling to their seats. Martin kneeled in front of you and leaned near enough to whisper, โThank you, princess.โย
Yujin choked with the water again, and Leeseo was just there, wide-eyed and jaw on the floor. You froze, brain stuttering to find something coherent to say after that. It was well known that you hated nicknames like that, but why are you feeling your cheeks warming up so fast? The class started whispering.ย
Days passed, but something about him had shifted.
He still sat in the back (mostly because of his height), still wore that lazy smirk when teachers called his name, but between the sarcasm and the half-lidded stares out the window, you caught him writing. Even more, he divided the notebook into two, where he had both school material and lyrics alongside some guitar chords. Once, you even saw the corner of a paper titled โCORTIS - Set Ideas!!โ when you were delivering lesson papers.
He wasnโt slacking off anymore. He was trying.
And since he was trying, the warnings of your bad leadership were almost nonexistent. And it was weird, mostly because you didnโt know how to feel about it.
By the second week, the girls' bathroom was starting to fill with rumors.
โCortis is joining the Battle of the Bands next month! Iโm going to support Juhoon.โ
โKeonho and Seonghyeon are the youngest people to be there.โ
โIf they go and win, they will break Hamlin's streak of three years.โ
You overheard it all, pretending not to listen, but it was inevitable, the emotions for everyone there, since itโs their big โgigโ
ยท ยท โ ยทโถยท โ ยท ยท
At home, though, things stop being simple. Your mother had entered one of her โplanning phases,โ consisting of color-coded schedules of times to study for the college entrance exam, college catalogs spread across your desk.
โMother, Iโm home,โ you screamed. You heard the footsteps of your mother coming from the kitchen. She even has more college catalogs in her hands.
โY/N, I made a decision. You're going to apply for early admission.โ You stopped, looking at her in confusion.
โI thought we agreed that I would not do that.โ
โYou need to focus. You have the grades; now you need the commitment. No distractions,โ she reminded you for the fourth time that week.ย
"Mother, I have all my study schedules already, and I'm on track for the mock exams. I'm literally planning the school's social calendar while keeping my GPA up. What more commitment do you need that you found the need to make that decision without consulting me?โ you said, trying to keep your tone even.
โDonโt raise your voice at me,โ she snapped, the papers in her hands hitting the table with a dull thud. โI know whatโs best for your future. You donโt. You think organizing dances and trips for your classmates is going to help you get into Seoul National?โ
You clenched your fists. โItโs not about that! Itโs about the fact that you donโt trust me to handle my own life!โ
โYouโre seventeen, Y/N. You donโt even know what youโll want in five years!โ
โBecause youโve never given me the chance to figure it out!โ you shot back before you could stop yourself, your voice breaking slightly.ย
โIโm going to college and not mess it up like you!โ Your motherโs palm slapped sharply on your cheek.ย
โWhatโs going on here?!โ Your fatherโs voice came from the hallway. You hadnโt even realized heโd arrived. But you didnโt care.
You pushed past him, tears already blurring your vision as you ran out the door. You could hear him calling your name, but his voice faded behind you, swallowed by the night air.
You didnโt care about your mom.
You didnโt care about the neighbors staring as you rushed down the street, barefoot in house slippers.
You didnโt care about the way your chest tightened with every breath you took.
You just ran.
And when your legs finally gave out, you found yourself in a quiet park. The street lights flickered faintly, the world spinning around you.
Your knees hit the ground first. Then came the sobs. You pressed your palms to the dirt as your body trembled, the sound of your breathing broken and uneven. For once, you couldnโt hold it in.
The pressure, the expectations, the endless need to be perfect, it all cracked open at once. You barely noticed the screams of a familiar tune until a shadow moved a few meters away.
โY/N! Are you here?!โ Martinโs voice didnโt even make you look up at him. The footsteps grew closer until you felt his presence. โGod, whatโs wrongโโ
Your arms wrapped around him, crying even harder. The bag heโd been holding slipped from his hand, hitting the grass with a muffled thud. A few things rolled out, forgotten.ย
He froze for half a second before his arms carefully wrapped around you as well.
โHeyโฆ hey,โ he murmured, voice low. โYouโre okay.โ
You shook your head against his chest, your sobs muffled by his hoodie. โNo. Iโm not. I canโtโI canโt do this anymore.โ
He didnโt say anything right away, just held you there as you cried, his hand moving slowly up and down your back. The only sounds were your uneven breaths and the faint rustle of leaves in the night breeze.
When you finally started to calm, he shifted slightly. Your eyes analyzed his face, the worry etched across his faceโthe kind you didnโt expect from him.
โDid someone hurt you?โ he asked quietly.
You swallowed hard, voice breaking slightly, โMy mother.โ
His jaw tightened, eyes flicking briefly to the faint redness on your cheek. You saw the flash of anger there. โThereโs a bench there, go sit there.โ
You did what he said, and when he came to sit next to you after picking up the stuff. He pulled a strawberry milk and gave it to you, thanking him.
โI saw you running,โ he said. โI was leaving the supermarket, and I just followed. It looked like you were about to disappear.โ
You sniffled, wiping your eyes with the back of your hand. โSorry, I didnโt mean to.โ
โDonโt.โ His voice softened immediately. โYou donโt have to apologize for crashing out.โ
You drank up the milk, sighing after.
โIโm just so tired, Martin.โ
โI know.โ He glanced up at the night sky for a moment. โYou donโt have to keep proving you can handle everything. Youโre allowed to fall apart sometimes.โ
You gave a small laugh. โThatโs not really on my schedule.โ
โThen itโs time to break it,โ he said simply, his tone somewhere between teasing and kind.ย
That actually pulled a real laugh from you and a faint smile from Martin. His hand brushed the dirt off his uniform pants before doing the same with your knees. โYou donโt have to talk about it if you donโt want to. Iโll just sit here.โ
You nodded, eyes still wet but calmer. โThanks for following me, I guess.โ
โAnytime,โ he said. โThough next time, please donโt make me drop all my groceries.โ
You two stayed there for a while; neither of you said anything. You just sat there sharing peace, a feeling none of you felt in a long time, and for different situations.
The night air had cooled a little by the time you both stood up from the bench.
โCome on,โ he said, nodding toward the road. โIโll walk you home before your dad sends a search party.โ
You hesitated for a moment, but then nodded. The street was almost empty as you walked side by side, your steps slow and the sound of cicadas blending with the quiet, distant buzz of traffic.
โAgain, Iโm really sorry,โ you said after a couple of steps. โI must have been a burden to you today.โ
Martin glanced at you, his expression unreadable in the streetlight glow. โYou needed someone to find you. Thatโs all.โ
After a few more quiet steps, you sighed, kicking at a pebble on the pavement. โItโs just not my mother. Everythingโs beenโฆ too much. The prom planning, the trip, the mock examsโitโs like I canโt breathe without having something due.โ
Martin chuckled softly. โLeave it to you to get stressed about fun things.โ
โTheyโre only fun when people actually help,โ you said, exasperated. โEven if the committee is completely involved in those two things, the principal is bothering me. Iโve been running back and forth with the school board about budget approvals, and I swear, if one more teacher calls me responsible like itโs a compliment, Iโm going to scream.โ
โThen scream. Iโll join you.โ
You rolled your eyes but couldnโt help the small smile tugging at your lips. โYou? Youโd probably turn it into a song.โ
โMaybe I already did.โ
You looked up at him, but he just shrugged. โWeโre working on something for the Battle of the Bands,โ he said. โPrize money isn't bad. Thinking of donating it.โ
You raised an eyebrow. โDonating? Since when are you that noble?โ
โSince I found out how expensive renting a DJ, using massive decorations, and the food is,โ he said, giving you a sideways glance. โKeonho is stressed with that too, and we figured if we win, weโll put some of the money toward your prom fund.โ
You blinked, taken aback. โYouโd do that?โ
โFor the school,โ he confirmed, but the grin that followed made it impossible to believe him. โWellโฆ mostly for you.โ
You laughed quietly, shaking your head in disbelief. โAnd what exactly do you get out of that deal?โ
He took a moment before answering, kicking at the pavement as if he were debating whether to say it. โA date.โ
You stopped walking. โA what?โ
โA date,โ he repeated, meeting your eyes. โWith you. Just one.โ
You stared at him, heart skipping in that annoying wait it always did around him lately. โYouโre joking.โ
โNot this time.โ His voice had softened, โIโve kinda liked you for a while, Y/N. Like, since sophomore year, a whileโ
You opened your mouth to say something, but nothing came out. The words and the mere sight of how he rubbed the back of his neck with the faintest flush creeping into his cheeks were enough to really blow you away.
โYou probably thought I was just being annoying all the timeโฆ That was me trying to get your attention without, you know, getting expelled for it.โ
You blinked at him. โTwo years?โ
He nodded, starting to walk again. โTwo very long and humbling years.โ
You looked away at the back of his figure, hiding the small smile that tugged at your lips. Once you reached him, you focused on looking straight.
โI donโt know what to say,โ you admitted.
โYou donโt have to say anything,โ he replied. โJustโฆ let me win first. Then decide.โ
You huffed, shaking your head. โYouโre ridiculous.โ
โYeah, but Iโm a ridiculous guy with a plan,โ he said, lightly swinging his hips to move your body.ย
You reached your gate a few minutes later. The house lights were still on, the silhouette of your dad faintly visible through the curtains.
When you stopped, so he did, taking a look at your place for the first time. โYou gonna be okay?โ
You nodded. โI think so.โ
He smiled. โGood. Donโt disappear like that again, okay? I canโt keep rescuing the class president from emotional breakdowns.โ
You smirked faintly. โAnd here I thought you liked being the hero.โ
He tilted his head, pretending to think. โMaybe I just like you.โ
You froze at the words. You saw how he shoved his hands into his pockets.ย
โSee you tomorrow, Prez.โ
โGoodnight, Martin.โ
He started walking away. You stood there for a moment, heart beating way too fast for someone whoโd just survived a meltdown. Your feet started walking fast to where he was.
โMartin!โ He stopped instantly, turning on his heel. The look on his face was equal parts concern and confusion, the grocery bag still dangling from one hand.ย
You walked up to him, stopping close enough to feel the warmth radiating off his skin. Your hand reached for his tie, pulling him down gently.ย
On your tiptoes, you pressed a quick kiss to his cheek.ย
โIโm really thankful,โ you murmured.
Neither of you moved. His eyes widened slightly before that boyish grin spread across his face, causing you to smile back. You stepped back quickly, cheeks burning, and darted toward the gate before he could say anything else.
Once inside, you shut it softly behind you, leaning against the cool metal to steady your racing heartbeat and touching your lips. Curiosity got the better of you, and you peeked through the small hole in the wall that your dad refused to fix.
Martin was still there, frozen in place, and soon enough, he pulled his fist to the sky while walking away, or more like dancing away, down the sidewalk.
โLetโs go!โ you heard the scream, and you bit your lip, stifling a laugh of your own.
October came fast, mostly because your parents decided on an uncontested divorce and your dad got the apartment downtown. Yujin jumped when he found out itโs five minutes away from his house. The place felt quieter; your mother had thrown herself into work, and you into whatever kept you from thinking too much: school, council duties, and, against all odds, CORTIS.
Somehow, Martin had managed to stop getting detention every other week. He still mouthed off at the teachers sometimes, wore his ring and the smirk, but he wasnโt the same boy who used to skip class just to nap on the rooftop.
It was truly impressive, you saw how he actually took notes during math, how he waited for everyone after band practice instead of just storming off, how he asked the teacher questions about topics, and even delivered small notes on your desk, ones that make you happy, as if it was a normal thing to do.
Leeseo had caught all that and more, dedicating his free time to watching you watching him, whispering, โYouโre so done for,โ grinning and doing a couple of mimics with Yujin.
But of course, you denied it every time.ย
Because no one needs to know that you were actually falling for him.
Still, when the last high school exam ended, everyone started spilling out of the classrooms, screaming โfreedom!โ the second the bell rang for the end of the day. Everyone stood up joyfully, and from the corner of your eye, you caught sight of Martin coming your way, a bag lazily hanging on his shoulder.
โEverybody listen up!โ Yujin shouted, standing on top of a chair and waving his arms dramatically. โToday, itโs the Band of Battles. Letโs all go and support our beautiful high school and CORTIS as a last act of love to this place!โย
The whole class erupted in cheers, the rest of the students clapping at his words like he said something revolutionary.
Yujinโs friend, Gunwook, jumped onto a chair too, holding up his hand to point at Martin. โMartin, as the leader, pick a color so we can dress up.โย
Martin posed theatrically, pretending to think it through before his eyes looked at you. His grin softened as soon as his fingers brushed the small red bow pinned in your hair.
โI like red today.โ The whole class went wild, but his eyes simply scanned the redness that the tip of your ears caught. You tried to act unfazed, but the way he smirked at you made your stomach twist.ย
His mouth went near your ear, โYou can wear whatever you like, you look good in anything.โ
By the time the noise died down, so did your heartbeat when he left the classroom, mouthing, โIโll see you thereโ. Everyone had plans and was starting to spread the word before heading home to change and go to the event.
You, on the other hand, had to stay behind, for quite a while, actually.ย
While your classmates flooded out of the building, already buzzing about the performance, you found yourself sitting across from the principal for more than an hour, finalizing the last details for the senior trip next week. Each little break, you looked up at the clock hanging on top of the wall, sighing in relief when he thanked you for your dedication, which was a nice way to say โyou work too muchโ and finally let you go. You were already late, and you at least wanted to arrive one act before the boys.
The hallways were nearly empty now, sunlight slanting through the windows in soft orange streaks. You smiled faintly when you passed a whiteboard where someone had scrawled โCORTIS = Victory!โ alongside other words of encouragement.
Your chest felt a little lighter reading it, even making you pull out your camera to snap a picture so you can show it to the band through Keonho later.
You were halfway down the front steps when you saw a woman standing outside the school gates, elegantly dressed in a cream coat and hair pinned neatly back. Without losing the beat of your quick steps, you continued until you felt a presence near you and soon, a hand on your shoulder that made you jump.
โExcuse me,โ she called gently, laughing awkwardly at your reaction. โAre you Y/N?โ
You hesitated before nodding, โYesโฆ Do I know you?โ
โOh, Iโm sorry. Iโm Martinโs mom.โ
You blinked before bowing down; you didnโt expect his mother to look that elegant yet have such an expression that felt oddly familiar.
โNice to meet you.โ
โIโm the one I should say that, darling. Iโve heard about you,โ she said. โMartin speaks of you more than he probably realizes.โ
You couldnโt help the smile that formed on your face. โThank you so much.โ
โHeโs changed lately,โ she said. โHe comes home earlier, studies, and seems steadier. And I know you might have something to do with that positive change.โ
You werenโt sure how to respond. โWell, heโs been working hard in high school and for the band. You probably already know how much it means to him.โ
Her smile faltered, just a tiny bit, before speaking again. โYes, well, thatโs what I wanted to talk to you about.โ
โAbout the band?โ you frowned, already thinking of what she was about to say.
โMusic has always been a phase for him. His father has great plans, engineering, university abroad, to be specific. I was hoping you could talk to him, convince him to take his future seriously again.โ
Thatโs the moment you went speechless. Your mind works ten times faster to choose your words carefully. โWith all respect, Mrs. Park. I don't think it's a phase, and I wonโt do that. At all.โ
โIโm sorry?โ she said, confusion flickering on her face.
โIโve seen him when heโs performing,โ you said. โWhen heโs practicing with the band, when heโs writing lyrics on the back of his notebook, heโs not pretending; he looks alive doing that. It's not just a distraction for him; itโs who he actually is.โ
You could see how the first crack in her composure showed, lips parted. โYou sound just like him.โ
โMaybe thatโs because you both underestimate how much he cares about what he does,โ you vented. โI get that engineering might have been his fatherโs and your dream. But music as a whole makes him happy. Whether itโs producing or singing, thatโs how he wants to live his life.โ
There was a silence for a moment, so you took that moment to inhale briefly and continue.
"Martin listens to music when heโs feeling stressed. Heโs not into literature, but he writes such good lyrics that you might even think heโs becoming some kind of poet. And the way he looks when heโs playing? Thatโs him in his element.โ
The woman lowered her head, sighing. โI just donโt want him to throw his future away. Not after everything thatโs happened.โ
โMaybe this is his future, it just doesnโt look like the one you two pictured.โ
ย โYouโre a very smart girl, Y/N,โ she finally said.
โIโm just honest,โ you replied, offering a small smile.
โThatโs even rarer,โ she murmured. โI can see why heโโ she stopped herself, simply smiling again, โThank you for being good to him.โ
An idea came to you, the backpack that was on your shoulder ended in the middle of you two, taking away the pamphlet Seonghyeon and James had given to promote, and extended to her. โHeโs a good person, Mrs. Park. And just like how you believe in him to achieve the engineering future, believe and trust him with his.โ
You bowed slightly when she took the paper, walking away to catch the bus that would take you home. Thankfully, you arrived safely.
You kicked off your shoes at the entrance, calling out, โDad, Iโm home!โ before leaning down to kiss his forehead as he read through a newspaper on the couch with his work clothes still on.
โHey, kiddo,โ he said with a smile. โYou look busy.โ
โAlways!โ you shouted, darting into your room.
They were still scattered with open notebooks and the faint scent of highlighter ink, stuff youโd temporarily promised yourself to forget tonight.
After the divorce, your dad had insisted on helping you โreclaim the place.โ Heโd driven you to buy new clothes, helped you hang posters, and even tolerated the sparkly beaded curtain youโd begged to put on your door. For the first time in months, the room looked like yours, not your motherโs version of perfection.ย
You took the quickest shower and got dressed in record time, the white camisole layered under a cropped denim jacket, a mini skirt with a rhinestone belt, and your sports shoes. A knock on your door made you look away from the mirror.
โCome in!โ you called, picking some blush on your brush to put it onto your cheeks.
Your dad peeked in, smiling softly as he stepped inside. โAre you still getting ready?โ
โAlmost done, thanks for driving me there,โ you replied, setting down the brush.
He chuckled and sat on the edge of your bed, looking around and whistling. โWow, youโre really made this place your own.โ
You smiled at his reflection in the mirror proudly. โYeah, I guess I did.โ
โYou also seem different lately. Happier.โ
โMaybe because exams are over, both of us are in a good place, and Iโm finally hanging out with my friends. Which, by the way, Iโm grateful for.โ
โWell, you deserve them since youโve always worked hard,โ he smiled. You felt that shift when he was done, suddenly suffocating.
He watched you for a moment, a teasing glint in his eyes. โSoโฆ what do you want to ask?โ you said, already suspicious.
โNow, why do you think that?โ he asked, laughing when you raised an eyebrow at him, seeing him leaning forward with a grin on his face. โWhatโs his name?โ
The mascara wand ended halfway to your lashes. โWhat's whose name?โ
โThe boy,โ he said simply. โAnd donโt tell me there isnโt one. Iโm not blind. Youโve been smiling more, playing music in your room, and Iโm pretty sure heโs the same boy who brought you home that night.โ
You covered your face, groaning, feeling your cheeks getting warmer with each second. โDad, please.โ
โSo Iโm right,โ he said, amused that his dad instincts didnโt betray him. โWhatโs his name?โ
The small silence was broken when you sighed softly. โMartin.โ
Your dad nodded slowly. โIs that the boy whoโs in that band you mentioned, right?โ
โYeah,โ you said, trying your best to sound casual. โHeโs their leader, and he has been studying with me since middle school. Kind of stubborn. Really annoying sometimes.โ
โHuhโโ you could tell by how he was clearly unconvinced. โAnd what makes him so annoying?โ
You opened your mouthโready to list somethingโbut nothing came. Instead, what slipped out was, โHe doesnโt quit. Even when everyone expects him to.โ
Your dad hummed softly.ย
โAnd when he talks about music,โ you went on, your mind planting words in a second, โhe gets this lookโฆ like the rest of the world just disappears, heโs in his own happy place.โ
You paused, but somehow the words kept coming. โHeโs also funny,โ you admitted, taking your hairclips to fix your hair with a smile tugging at your lips. โNot the kind that tries hard, itโs like, half of the time he says something and you canโt even tell if itโs a joke or heโs being serious. It makes you laugh anyway.โ
You stood up to pick some rings to match the outfit, continuing to speak. โHeโs kind, pretends he doesnโt care, but he remembers things. He smiles with his whole face, and when thereโs somethingย he likes, he wonโt stop until he gets it.โ
โI thought you were saying something about him being annoying, right?โ
Heat crept up your neck immediately. โIโThatโs notโI didnโt meanโโ
โDarling. Itโs okay, Iโm sure you didnโt.โ
โOh my God, please stop talking.โ You took your essentials quickly and ran to the front door, waiting in the car immediately.ย
The drive was calm, the windows cracked open, making the October air carry faint echoes of music from blocks away. The sunset was painting the sky in streaks of pink and gold.
He glanced at you as they stopped at a red light. โSounds like you really care about him. And so does he.โ
โI guess I do,โ you whispered before you could stop yourself.
โI would love to meet him properly sometime,โ you were about to protest, but he shushed you quickly. โNo โbutsโโ
โFine.โ You both arrived at the youth center quite fast. The road was already lined with parked cars, students who didnโt receive a ticket and decided to enjoy from outside, a handful of paparazzi, and a lot of security.
You heard your dadโs whistle under his breath. โLooks like the whole district showed up.โ
โIt really does.โ You clutched your bag a little tighter.
He slowed the car near the entrance, smiling as he glanced at you. โAre you nervous?โ
You shook your head quickly. โMaybe a little.โ
โYouโll do fine.โ
โIโm not performing,โ you laughed a little, confused.
He grinned, a hand on top of your shoulder. โDidnโt say you were. But I have a feeling something might happen.โ
You rolled your eyes, unbuckled your seatbelt, and checked one last time that you didnโt forget the vip ticket Martin left on your locker.
โThanks for the ride,โ you said, kissing his cheek.
โAnytime, sweetheart. Tell me if youโre going somewhere else, and tell Martin I said good luck!โ
โDad!โ You heard his laugh as you walked away, turning around to wave him off before stepping into the noise of the crowd after safely passing security, although you almost fell after a few of them tried to fight security.
The venue wasnโt really one, more like a repurposed parking lot with a stage at one end and strings of lights hanging overhead. Students from different schools packed the space, every single one was excited, waving balloons from side to side or a flashlight.
โY/N!โ Leeseo appeared right in front of you, hugging you, and Yujin arrived a little later. โYou just missed like two acts, Hanlim was even better than last year!โ
โHow did your meeting go?โ Yujin asked, and a smile was more than enough for them.
โThe trip is completely done, there are no problems.โ
โFinally!โ Yujin grinned. โWe deserve that trip; this year has been trash.โ
โNot for Y/N, she finally has a crush,โ she sang, Yujin and Leeseo start poking your sides. โYou know Martinโs going to show off.โ
You rolled your eyes. โHe always does.โ
But your pulse quickened anyway when the stage lights flickered to red and you saw the MC going to the center of the stage, gaining a scream from the crowd.
โWhat a performance from Hanlim!โ she said. A roar of cheers from a group of students startled you. โLetโs keep this energy up for the next group, from SOPAโฆ give it up for CORTIS!โ
The boys walked to the stage, the excitement and screams from the place feeding them. James settled behind the drums, spinning a stick in one hand. Juhoon adjusted his guitar strap, Seonghyeonโs fingers danced over the keys to test it, and Keonho flashed his familiar grin from behind his bass.
Then Martin walked out.
Graphic tee with layered chains, jeans slouching low, sneakers unlaced. Stage lights caught on his chain as he leaned into the mic. โWhatโs up, Seoul!โย
Cheers erupted again, a few girls screaming his name and the other guys. โTonight, itโs a special night because weโre performing our self-produced song for the world to hear!โ
Leeseo elbowed when you immediately started clapping and cheering.
โEnjoy yourself, love. You deserve this!โ Martin started playing some guitar chords.
โCrash, smash, rock, mash up
Ooh, take what you want
๋, ๋ฉ, ๋ช ์, love, and what?
Ooh, take what you want.โ
You remember hearing them practice bits of it during free periods when you walked by to give them some snacks and reminding Keonho about little details to fix for the trip.
Hearing it live was very different from it; all of the instruments crashed together in perfect sync, and you finally listened to all five singing together, which was uncommon for bands. Everyone was shouting along, even if they didnโt know the words. In a moment, Martinโs eyes found you. For that split second, you could feel your heart trying to escape from your ribs.ย
โSome people want this, some people want that
Same here, all seventeen years of my life.โ
Martin started walking around to interact with people, standing in front of you three.
โChased after love, chased after fame.
So now I want the whole world to know my name.โ
He winked at you, feeling it like a spark as heat rushed to your cheeks. Yujin started laughing at your face, and Keonho smiled teasingly at you.
A couple of minutes later, the song ended with a burst of applause, Martin running a hand through his hair before grabbing the mic again.
โAlright,โ he said, breathless but grinning. โWeโve got one more for you.โย
He paused the moment his gaze found you immediately.ย
You smiled faintly, catching the flicker of nerves in his eyes, and mouthed, โBreathe.โ
He huffed out a laugh, the corner of his mouth lifting before turning his head to the band. Juhoon leaned into his mic.
โGo for it, dude.โ The five boys laughed, Martin turning back to his mic.
โThis,โ he started, โis one of the many songs I wrote for this girl.โ His eyes never left yours. โIf it wasnโt for you, I donโt think Iโd have written any of them.ย
You looked at Leeseo and Yujin on your side; they were smiling already. They knew this would happen.
He stepped back slightly, adjusting the guitar strap on his shoulder, and nodded toward the rest of the band. โItโs called โIris.โโ
"And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to Heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't wanna go home right now."
The lyrics drifted through the air, and though he was looking out toward the audience, every few lines his gaze found its way back to you, long enough that it was impossible to look away.
He wasnโt performing anymore. He was confessing to you for a second time.
You felt your throat tighten, fingers twisting around the hem of your jacket, your heart beating full speed, and making you clear of one thing. You were completely in love with that person whom you thought you hated.
"And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am."
The crowd swayed with the melody, arms raised, voices echoing when they learn a little piece of the song. You didnโt even realize you were holding your breath until he smiled at you mid-line. The final chorus exploded, lights flashing, the crowd roaring. Martinโs voice cracked slightly on the last noteโand somehow, it made it perfect. You screamed at the very end, chanting with your friends, โCORTIS!โ.
The five joined Martin, bowing down in gratitude with big smiles on their faces. Juhoon was teary-eyed, and you could tell that it moved the rest of the members as they walked out. The MC came back, impressed.
โWow! Cortis really wants the money. We will have a five-minute break so the judges can decide.โย ย
Leeseo grabbed your arm, eyes wide. โY/Nโฆ I think you just got serenaded.โ
โGo see him.โ Yujin pointed at the small hallway you could go to. You looked at him, panicking.
โLike now?โ
โYes!โ Both of them pushed you there, moving for a couple of minutes before you reach it. You waited for the security to get distracted to enter there, closing it as fast as you opened it.
At a distance, you saw Martin laughing while watching James and Keonho jumping in happiness, James even half-yelling something about โnot missing the last chord for once.โ
You slipped past the curtain, unsure whether to find him or run before someone teased you for looking like you belonged there.
โNoona!โ
Too late. You turned just in time to see Seonghyeon spot you instantly.ย
His shout was loud enough to catch the attention of all five.
โPrez!โ Keonho was the first to move, practically launching himself into your arms before you could even react. โWhat do you think, Prez?โ
You laughed, stumbling back half a step under his weight. โI think youโre all still dangerously hyper.โ
โWe totally killed it, what do you mean?โ Juhoon cut in proudly, slinging an arm over Keonhoโs shoulders. James raised his drumsticks triumphantly in agreement, and Seonghyeon grinned from behind the keyboard setup, already pretending to wipe sweat off his brow dramatically.
You shook your head fondly, brushing hair from your face. โYou guys were amazing. Really.โ
He was standing a few feet away, hair damp with sweat, guitar strap still hanging loose at his side. The grin he wore was boyish, tired, and radiant all at once.
โOccupational hazard,โ he said with a shrug, stepping closer. โSo? Howโd we do?โ
โYouโre asking the school council president for a review?โ you teased.
โI trust your judgment,โ he said simply.ย
โMore like his crush judgment,โ Seonghyeon spoke, hissing later after Juhoon pinched him.
โCan you leave us alone for a sec?โ Martin looked at James.
โYou all heard him! Step back, ladies,โ you laughed at the funny view of them trying to listen.
The grin softened before becoming quiet again. โSo?โ
You exhaled, letting yourself smile despite yourself. โYou were amazing, Martin. Really.โ
He froze for a heartbeat, eyes lighting up. โYou mean that?โ
You nodded. โEvery word.โ
He ran a hand through his hair, pretending to play it cool, but the faint flush at the tips of his ears betrayed him. โGuess that means I can cash in on my deal.โ
You frowned. โDeal?โ
โThe one where if we win, you owe me a date.โ
You scoffed, trying not to grin. โYou havenโt even won yet.โ
He leaned in a little, lowering his voice. โWe both know weโre not walking out of here without that trophy and cash.โ
You were about to fire back something smart when the loudspeaker crackled to life outside.
โAll bands, please gather near the stage! Results will be announced!โ
He looked at you and smirked. โCome on, front row like before, Prez.โ
The crowd was electric again when you came back, students pressing closer to the makeshift stage, voices rising in chaotic chants. Hanlim Highโs band stood on one side, exhausted but smiling; CORTIS stood on the other. You could sense the adrenaline pulsing through their little group.
You stood with Leeseo and Yujin near the barricade, your heart weirdly hammering even though you werenโt the one competing. You three held hands.
โAnd the winners of this yearโs Battle of the Bandsโฆโ the announcer said, drawing it out. The entire lot went silent for a breath.
โโฆCORTIS!โ
The explosion of sound was immediate.
Students screamed, threw confetti, jumped, and cheered so loud you could barely hear the bandโs name being repeated over the speakers. Keonho dropped to his knees, James banged a drum in celebration, and Juhoon lifted his guitar triumphantly in the air.
Martin just stood there for a second, blinking in disbelief as he grabbed the big cardboard check before looking toward you through the chaos.
You clapped your hands over your mouth, laughing, and he broke into the brightest smile youโd ever seen. Then, like it was instinct, he pointed right at you before turning to grab the mic.
โThis oneโs for SOPA High, and for the people who never stopped believing in us!โ he shouted. โEspecially one of them.โ
Leeseo smirked beside you. โIf you donโt date him soon, I will.โ
You didnโt get a chance to reply because Martin had already jumped off the stage into the crowd, swallowed by a sea of cheering hands and students trying to high-five him. You decided not to bother the moment by moving near a corner to breathe properly with Leeseo next to you, who was almost suffocating.
Later, when the crowd started thinning, people made plans to celebrate at a nearby karaoke place. Banners were torn down, the lights dimmed, and laughter filled the streets as everyone drifted away in groups.
You were helping Yujin pick up some discarded signs when you noticed Martin slipping away from the commotion, walking towards you with a smile. Before he could reach you, he paused, looking right behind you.
Following his gaze, you saw her.
His mom.
Standing near both of you, clutching her bag, and if your vision wasnโt playing, you could see her eyes wet from what sheโd just watched.
Martin froze when he saw her. For a second, he looked like a little boy again, before taking a slow step forward to be next to you.
โMom,โ he said quietly.
She smiled faintly, her voice soft. โYou were incredible.โ
He blinked, caught off guard. โYouโฆ came?โ
โI had some help,โ she said, glancing to your side, and your heart skipped when you realized she meant you.
Martin turned slightly. You gave a small bow before stepping back.
โI will give you two some space,โ you bowed again before walking to where Leeseo and Juhoon were standing.ย
When he looked back at his mom, her eyes were already glistening.
โI see what she meant,โ she said.
He frowned slightly. โWhat did who mean?โ
โY/N,โ she said. โShe told me that music isnโt your rebellion, itโs more like your peace.โ Her voice trembled slightly, but her smile didnโt waver. โShe was right. You lookedโฆ happy. Really happy.โ
Martin swallowed hard. โMomโฆโ
โIโve been thinking about something for months,โ she continued, clutching her purse tighter. โAnd after tonight, I think I've finally made up my mind.โ She paused, steadying her breath. โIโm going to file for divorce.โ
His eyes widened in surprise, a sudden feeling of relief occupying his whole body. โYouโre serious?โ
She nodded. โI canโt keep pretending everythingโs fine. And I think you, your father, and I both deserve honesty, even if it hurts.โ
Martinโs throat tightened. โIโm proud of you, Mom.โ
Her smile wavered, tears finally spilling over. โNo, sweetheart. Iโm proud of you.โ
He didnโt hesitate, just stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. This was the first time in a while he gave and felt a hug that was that tight and overdue.ย
After a while, she pulled back and brushed his hair from his forehead, her voice quiet. โYouโve grown up so much. And that girlโฆ sheโs good for you.โ
Martin blinked, glancing instinctively toward where you stood, half-hidden behind the fence. You were talking to Leeseo, occasionally looking at him with your smile.
โSheโs a great girl,โ his mom added softly. โDonโt let her slip away.โ
He smiled, that same shy, crooked smile that only ever showed up when it came to you. โI wonโt.โ
โCortis and friends!โ she screamed, not even willing to bat their eyelids. โGrab your stuff and get in the car, food is on me.โ
As his mom turned to leave for the car, he looked back toward you again. You were laughing now as you watched James running at the word food, the streetlights glinting off your red bow as you tucked your hair behind your ear.
And for the first time in a long while, Martin didnโt feel like the boy running away from everything. He felt like someone finally heading toward something worth staying for.

The school courtyard was anything but calm. Countless rolling suitcases, half-zipped duffel bags, and sleepy students chugging canned coffee like their lives depended on it to keep awake for at least of the way there.
After a weekend of endless messages about CORTISโ victory on Cyworld and your classmates posting grainy flip-phone photos of Martin grinning with the trophy, it felt surreal that it was finally trip day. The band made sure they cashed the prize and gave you a big amount for the prom if they got to perform again, which you obviously agreed to.
You adjusted your backpack and sighed as Leeseo ran up to you, waving a folded permission slip.
โCan you believe theyโre trusting us with three whole nights away from supervision?โ she grinned.
โPlease,โ you said, smiling faintly. โYou know half the teachers are going to patrol the halls like spies.โ
Yujin jogged up behind her, yawning. โIโm only here for the free breakfast buffet.โ
โYouโre here because you begged to be in my room,โ Leeseo shot back.
โPrez!โ
You turned instinctively, only for Keonho to appear out of nowhere, blocking your view with a grin too wide to be innocent. Last time he gave you that type of smile, you were in the director's office.
โMorning!โ he said brightly, holding a carton of banana milk. โYou want one?โ
You frowned, eyeing him. โYou hate banana milk.โ
โDo I?โ He glanced down, pretending to think. โMaybe Iโve changed.โ
Before you could answer, Juhoon popped up behind him. โY/N! Quick question: if a band wins something again, should the prize money go into savings or celebration snacks?โ
You blinked. โWhat?โ
โSnacks,โ James said immediately, dragging his suitcase past.
โDefinitely savings,โ Seonghyeon countered.
โHold on, I didnโt evenโโ
โExactly!โ Keonho interrupted, looping an arm through yours. โWe are the only ones who can settle it. Come on, letโs walk and talk, far away from the buses.โ
You narrowed your eyes. โWhat are you guys up to?โ
โNothing,โ they chorused, which was, of course, the most suspicious answer possible.
By the time you reached the front of the boarding area, the CORTIS boys had somehow managed to keep you talking about everything from โthe ethics of snack budgetingโ to โwho snores the loudest during overnight tripsโ (it was apparently James).
Every time you tried to glance toward the loading buses, one of them moved strategically into your line of sight.
โOkay,โ you said finally, crossing your arms. โWhatโs going on? And donโt say โnothingโ again.โ
Before you could press further, the teachers started calling everyone to board.
โSaved by the bell,โ Seonghyeon muttered, pushing his suitcase forward.
You squinted suspiciously at all four of them. โYouโre all terrible liars.โ
Keonho only winked. โWe learned from the best.โ
You rolled your eyes but couldnโt stop smiling as you followed them onto the bus.
ยท ยท โ ยทโถยท โ ยท ยท
The trip flew by in a blur of beach air, sightseeing, and several promposals that only happened when a hundred high school seniors were given freedom for three days straight and allowed their use of free will. You even helped out with Yujinโs promposal to Leeseo, to which she accepted happily.
You found yourself laughing more than you had in months, mostly because the CORTIS boys had taken it upon themselves to make every activity as dramatic as possible.
At lunch, James accidentally tripped and dropped an entire tray of kimbap, dramatically claiming it was โartistic sacrifice.โ Juhoon tried to serenade a teacher with a guitar for bonus points on attendance. And the best for last was probably Keonho and Seonghyeon attempting to sneak extra dessert for everyone, only to get caught by the cafeteria lady, who then gave them more because she found them โcharming.โ
You werenโt sure when it happened, but somehow, their energy became the highlight of the trip.
Every so often, though, you caught Martin watching you from across the group, who you were impressed by how distracted he looked all this trip, exchanging some words with you now and then.
On the last night, during the โrecreation period,โ the teachers announced everyone could stay in the courtyard area to watch the sunset and enjoy the small outdoor stage.ย
You and Leeseo were sitting near the front, sharing a pack of chips on a break after a small duet given by Wonbin and Liz.
โYujin, what are you moving your head like a meerkat? Youโre stressing me out.โ Leeseoโs eyebrows furrowed.
โOkay, donโt freak out, but I think something is happening.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ you asked, already getting stressed out. You might have changed a little bit, but you were still a little perfectionist.
Music started playing from the speakers, and your mind instantly recognized the familiar brass riff it had.
โYouโre just too good to be trueโฆโ
Your jaw dropped at the voice of Martin. โLeeseo, is this real?.โ
โOh, yes,โ Leeseo whispered, eyes sparkling. You didnโt notice how she was holding a recording camera, pointing it at you.
Martin opened the curtain that worked as a background on the stage, his gaze fully on you. Martin jumped off the stage, mic in hand, grinning as he began to sing the classic with over-the-top theatrics.
โCanโt take my eyes off of youโฆโ
He pointed at you on the last word, and everyone screamed.
You covered your face, but it was useless. Martin was committed. He climbed onto one of the benches, sang to the teachers (who pretended not to laugh), and even slid down on one knee in front of a startled Yujin, who dramatically clutched his heart.
The entire class was upside down as the music built. He ran up the small aisle and stopped right in front of you.
You were laughing so hard you could barely breathe. โMartinโโ
He was interrupted by singing directly to you, his grin wider than ever.
โI love you, baby, and if itโs quite alrightโฆโ
You buried your face in your hands, but he gently pulled them away, still singing. The crowd clapped along to the beat, the boys behind him quickly moving. Martin spun around, giving a cue to Juhoon to give him a flower bouquet to go again in front of you, kneeling on one knee.
When the song finally ended, Martin was breathless, sweat-damp hair sticking to his forehead, but his eyes never left yours.
Behind him, James and Seonghyeon were holding a banner, the phrase: โI may not be Shakespeare, but I promise prom with me will be a sonnet.โ
The entire courtyard went silent.ย
He held the mic higher, the faint tremor in his hand betraying the adrenaline rushing through him. Despite the wide grin on his face, you could see his chest rising and falling a little too fast.
โSoโฆโ he said, catching his breath. โI think itโs pretty obvious what my feelings about you are.โย
โYou drive me insane, make me want to be better, even when I swear I donโt care about anything.โ He chuckled softly, shaking his head. โBut I do. I care too much, especially when it comes to you.โ
A few students in the front row let out small gasps, someone whispering, โOh my god, heโs serious.โ
Martin looked down for a second, the mic brushing against his lip as if he needed that pause to steady himself. When he lifted his head again, there was no smirk this time.e
โMaybe you donโt see it yet despite me saying I had this crush on you that night,โ he said, voice softer now, โbut when I look at you, itโs like the noise stops. And thatโs saying something, coming from me.โ The crowd laughed gently, and even you couldnโt help the small smile that broke through your shock.
Then he tilted his head, eyes glinting. โSo yeah,โ he said, tone dipping back into that familiar warmth, โI had to do this your way because words werenโt cutting it anymore.โ
The crowd burst into cheers again, clapping and whistling, chanting your name and his. You were still processing the words, your heart thudding painfully fast, when he looked straight at you again, a half-smile tugging at his lips.
โSo, Y/N,โ he said, almost shyly this time, pointing at the banner behind him that was shaken by the boys, โwill you go to prom with me?โ
The crowd collectively held its breath.
You blinked, stunned, then let out a shaky laugh. โYou couldโve just asked, you know.โ
He grinned, his breath still uneven, voice hoarse from the singing and the nerves.
โYeah, but whereโs the fun in that?โ
You looked at him, the boy whoโd spent half a year driving you crazy and the other half trying to make you smile. Your hand brushed against his as you took the bouquet. โMartin,โ you said softly, eyes meeting his, โyes. Of course Iโll go with you.โ
The courtyard eruptedโcheers, applause, a few whistles from the back. Juhoon and James started playing the outro riff again, and Keonho let out a triumphant, โShe said yes!โ into the backup mic.
Martin blinked at you like he wasnโt sure heโd heard right. โWaitโreally?โ
You laughed, warmth blooming in your chest. โReally.โ
For a moment, he just stared, then he exhaled, his smile breaking into something so bright it made your stomach twist. โIโmโuhโwow. Okay.โ
The boys were already pushing him forward, shouting for him to say something cool, but he just chuckled helplessly, scratching the back of his head.ย
โHug each other, idiots!โ Yujin screamed, and before you could react, Martinโs arms wrapped around you, lifting you clean off the ground.
Your surprised laugh got lost in the roar of the crowd. He spun you once, just enough for your shoes to leave the pavement, and when he set you down, your heart was racing far faster than it shouldโve
As the music picked up again, his hand reached out instinctively, brushing a loose strand of hair from your cheek. He looked like he wanted to say moreโso much moreโbut instead, he whispered, โSee you at night, Y/N.โ
Your frowned. โWait, what?โ
Before you could demand an explanation, Leeseo grabbed your wrist. โNo time for questionsโletโs go.โ
โWhat are you talking about?โ you asked, stumbling after her.
She only grinned. โOperation โDate Night,โ obviously.โ
โExcuse me, what?โ
Yujin was waiting near the dorms, arms crossed like an overexcited manager. โMartinโs orders. Youโre not allowed to show up in a school jacket in a romantic setting. Leeseo, you know what to do.โ
โOn it,โ she said, pulling you inside.
Ten minutes later, your room looked like a battlefield of denim, perfume, and lip gloss.
Leeseo had raided your bag, holding up two outfits with the seriousness of a stylist dressing an idol.
โOkay, option one: the floral skirt and cardigan combo. Itโs cute, safe, and very student council president. Option twoโฆโ She tossed a bundle at you. โSomething thatโll make him forget his own lyrics.โ
You gave her a look. โYouโre insane.โ
โAnd youโre welcome.โ
Leeseo was taking her sweet time; everything she was doing was slow and steady, keeping you busy with prom details and suggesting matching colors and opinions for her and Yujin for the event. Which also made you think if Martin is into matching colors.
When you finally looked in the mirror, the second Leeseo screamed in joy, you barely recognized yourself. The simple denim skirt paired with a white tank layered under a cropped cardigan, your hair loose and soft around your shoulders. A thin silver necklace rested at your collarbone.
โThank you, Leeseo.โ You hugged her tightly.
โAnything to see you leaving this school with your first boyfriend and have your first kiss.โ You laughed at her tease, face turning red. You left the dorm to start walking to the place, the sun had already dipped below the horizon, and you were sure that it was leaving behind streaks of rose and violet across the water.
When you reached the beach, fairy lights were strung between two wooden poles, flickering softly. A small speaker played a slow guitar riff, so it was clear he was there.
And there, sitting cross-legged on a picnic blanket with a basket on his side, was Martin.
He wasnโt dressed like the usual; he decided to wear a plain white tee layered under an open gray button-up, dark jeans cuffed at the ankles, and a simple silver chain that glinted every time he moved. His sneakers were scuffed, but clean, and his hair still messy from earlier, like he hadnโt bothered to fix it because he knew youโd recognize him anyway.
He looked up as soon as he heard your footsteps, that same lopsided grin tugging at his lips. โHey.โ
โHey yourself,โ you said, trying not to sound as breathless as you suddenly felt. โSo this was your mysterious โsee you tonightโ plan?โ
He rubbed the back of his neck, sheepishly. โYeah. The guys helped. Keonho almost set the lights on fire, but we made it work.โ
You laughed, shaking your head as you sat beside him. โThis isโฆ nice.โ
โYeah?โ he asked, trying not to look too eager.
โYeah,โ you said softly, your gaze drifting toward the waves. โReally nice.โ
He exhaled, shoulders dropping. โGood. I was worried itโd feel too much.โ
โNot at all, Tin,โ he laughed at the nickname.
For a while, you talked about everything and nothing while eating. The songs they were writing, the stress of exams finally being over, minus the one for college, and how Leeseo had forced you to change outfits under threat of โfashion failure.โ
Martin was quieter than usual. His usual sarcasm softened into warmth, his eyes flickering between you and the sea from time to time.
โYou really didnโt have to do all this,โ you said at one point, voice gentle.
He shook his head. โI wanted to. I justโฆ wanted you to have a night that wasnโt about expectations or responsibilities. Justโฆ you.โ
That made you look up, startled, and for a second, neither of you said anything.
The wind tugged at your hair, and he reached forward instinctively like before, brushing it back behind your ear. His hand lingered, thumb grazing your jaw as his breath caught.
โMartinโฆโ you whispered, your voice barely audible.
He didnโt move closer, but he didnโt move away either. His eyes flicked to your lips, then back to your eyes, as if he were fighting himself.
โI shouldnโt,โ he murmured, half to himself. โNot unless youโโ
Your heart stuttered. โUnless I what?โ
He smiled faintly. โUnless youโd actually let me.โ
You opened your mouth, but before you could speak, a loud crash echoed from behind the dunes.
โREALLY YUJIN?!โย Keonhoโs voice.
You both jumped apart, laughing in disbelief.
โOh my god,โ you groaned, covering your face. โThey were spying?โ
Martin ran a hand through his hair, chuckling. โI told them to stay in their rooms.โ
Another yell followed. โDid they kiss yet?โ
You looked at each other, bursting out laughing, really laughing, until your stomach hurt and the tension melted. Martin leaned back on his hands, still smiling. โGuess they saved us from doing something weโd probably overthink later.โ
You nudged his shoulder. โProbably.โ
He turned to you again, that same soft look from the concert flickering across his face. โStill,โ he said quietly, โyou make overthinking kind of worth it.โ
Your breath caught, but you just smiled. โYouโre impossible.โ
โAnd yet, here you are,โ he teased.
โYeah,โ you said, glancing at him through your lashes. โHere I am.โ
ยท ยท โ ยทโถยท โ ยท ยท
Martin and you got closer than ever, and even though it wasnโt official yet, not even your father could deny the chemistry between you two. You spent afternoons studying together, stealing glances over textbooks, and laughing about how far youโd come. The bond grew quietly, in the little things: late-night calls, going out with all of them, and the way he always walked you home after those little evenings, even when it meant taking the long route.
By the time November came around, the entrance exam was long over. The pressure had finally lifted, replaced by a sense of pride and relief. To your fortune, youโd gotten the scholarship for the career youโd always dreamed of, and everyone couldnโt be prouder.ย
Graduation day was full of bittersweet smiles. You got your physical pictures, one of you and Martin, standing close with your caps tilted while he carried you, another with your best friends, not leaving behind Keonho and Seonghyeon, who came to see you all six of you graduate. All of you are holding onto that perfect moment before life pulls you in different directions.ย
โCan you please stop looking at the picture with your boyfriend and help me with my hair like you promised?โ You turned your head to see Leeseo struggling to remove the hair rollers.ย
โHeโs not my boyfriend.โ
โYet,โ she moved her eyebrows up and down, happily seeing the look on your face.
Leeseo had barged into your room hours earlier, armed with curling irons, body glitter, and enough lip gloss to coat a car. Your bedroom floor was a battlefield of shoe boxes, safety pins, and half-zipped purses.
โThank you, now turn so I can help you,โ she ordered, tugging at the straps of your satin dress. It was simple but elegant. Soft champagne color, an a-line skirt, and a ribbon that tied at the back. Your silver necklace gleamed faintly at your collarbone, the same one youโd worn at the beach.
โLeeseo, I think my ribs canโt breathe,โ you muttered.
โThatโs how you know it fits,โ she said, completely unfazed. โNow smile. Youโre about to make a boy combust.โ
โStop,โ you groaned, cheeks already heating.
By the time you finished curling your hair, the doorbell rang, making you both freeze in place.
โTheyโre here,โ she whispered dramatically.
Leeseo grabbed her clutch, smoothing her pastel blue dress. โYou ready?โ
You exhaled slowly, heart fluttering. โAs Iโll ever be.โ
When you opened your bedroom door, your father was already downstairs, peeking through the hallway mirror before unlocking it.
The door swung open to reveal Yujin and Martin. Yujin wore a pale gray suit that was clearly too tight around his shoulders, and Martinโฆ Martin was in a black suit jacket over a white dress shirt, sleeves rolled casually to his elbows, and his signature silver chain glinting faintly at his collarbone. His hair was swept back loosely, enough to look polished without losing that โMartinโ edge.
You heard your dad talking. โAh, so these are the young men Iโve been hearing about.โ
โSir,โ Yujin said quickly, bowing with his usual charm. โWe promise to bring your daughter back before midnight.โ
Your dad raised an eyebrow. โYou'd better. I know where the school is.โ
Martin laughed under his breath, rubbing the back of his neck. โI will tell my mom that, sir.โ
Then you appeared at the top of the stairs, and for a secondโjust a secondโMartin forgot how to breathe.
Heโd seen you in a thousand different ways: annoyed, serious, focused, laughing. But this was new, and it surely made his pulse stutter.
You hesitated halfway down the stairs. โHey.โ
โHey,โ he said quietly, eyes following you until you reached the last step.
Leeseo descended right behind you, looking stunning in her powder-blue dress, immediately elbowing you when she caught Martin staring.
โAlright, everyone,โ your dad said, breaking the silence with a teasing smile, โbefore you leave, I need a photo. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, you donโt see this in Seoul.โ
โDadโโ you began, but he was already grabbing the camera from the counter.
โLine up,โ he ordered.
Yujin and Leeseo posed first, grinning widely. Then he waved at you and Martin. โYour turn.โ
You exchanged a helpless look with Martin before stepping closer. His hand brushed yours until your dad adjusted the frame.
โCloser,โ he said. โYou two look like youโre taking an ID photo.โ
Martin chuckled softly, sliding an arm around your waist. His hand rested lightly against your back, and you swore your heartbeat could be heard across the room.
Your dad smiled behind the camera. โThere we go. Perfect.โ Click.
The flash went off, and you both blinked, still standing close, when he lowered the camera.
โBeautiful,โ your father said warmly. โNow go, before you make me cry.โ
You laughed, shaking your head. โWeโll see you later, Dad.โ
โHave fun, sweetheart,โ he said, then glanced at Martin with mock seriousness. โBe safe.โ
โYes, sir,โ Martin said, smiling.
โYou clean up well,โ you said, forcing a casual smile.
โYou too. Didnโt know the Prez had a gown in her closet.โ
โDidnโt know you owned a shirt with buttons.โ
โTouchรฉ.โ
Yujin cleared his throat loudly. โOkay, thatโs enough flirting for the driveway. Mrs. Parkโs waiting!โ
You turned to see Martinโs mom, sitting in the front seat of her car, waving with a proud smile. โCome on, kids!โ
She looked radiant, freer than she had the last time youโd seen her. When you climbed in beside Leeseo, she glanced back at you through the mirror. โYou both look beautiful.โ
โThank you,โ you said, touched.
The car rolled up to the school gym, saying goodbye to his mom before going inside with your arm wrapped around Martinโs. The windows were glowing gold from the string lights inside that were giving out the theme โGolden Memories.โ You could already hear the song mix the DJ was creating on the spot.
โI can believe the committee pulled this off,โ You smiled proudly, thankful for the art club's offering to help out with the decorations art club did.ย
โNot bad for a bunch of overworked seniors.โ
โYou guys are late!โ
James started to have his arms, Keonho, Seonghyeon, and Juhoon at his sides, waving calmly near the entrance. You find it funny how Jamesโs tie was crooked, Juhoon was trying to help him fix it, and the other two were holding a notebook that you recognized as Martinโs.ย
โNice of you to dress up, boys,โ Martin called, grinning.
โDress up?โ Seonghyeon huffed, โItโs not even my graduation, and I look better than the three of you.โ
โYou girls look great.โ Keonho smiled, walking up to hug you first before going to Martinโs.
โOur leader is all grown up. Wearing a tie, bringing a dateโฆ next thing you know, heโll start paying taxes.โ
โDonโt curse me like that,โ Martin laughed it off.
You looked at Yujin and Leeseo. Despite laughing it off and teasing like usual, it was no news that it was their last big night as CORTIS before graduation. And although they were really committed to the band and set a goal to go a long way, it was their last performance in high school before life pulled them in different directions.
Seonghyeon mustโve felt it too, because when he clapped Martinโs shoulder, his voice wavered slightly. โLetโs have fun today.โ
โOh, we will have fun.โ A song started playing, and Leeseo dropped Yujinโs arm.
โCome on, weโre not wasting a good song!โ She immediately dragged you to the dance floor, feeling Martinโs gaze behind you.
Leeseoโs infectious energy made you join after a moment of hesitation; even the boys joined in after a few songs. Everyone lost count of how many songs they danced and went inside the circle, and by the time the slow songs rolled in, everyone started to pull their partners.
You were about to sit down, but you caught Martinโs eye once. He smiled at you while excusing himself to cross the floor toward you. The lights dimmed, and your teacher took the stage with a mic in hand.
โOkay, everyone. We are going to do this quickly. Letโs announce your prom king and queen. I need the president of the student council to come to hand the crowns.โ
You left Martin to pick up the cushion that had both crowns and stay at the end of the stage.
โTo remind all of you, the voting was done by taking paper and writing the name of the person you thought was suitable for the title. Letโs start by naming the king.โย
He flipped the card, sighing at the result. He paused for effect. โMartin Edwards.โ
Your jaw dropped, watching your friends go wild, shoving him forward as he was in disbelief. He walked to the stage, standing in front of you. You took the crown to neatly put it on top of his head.
โCongratulations, Tin,โ he smiled, walking away to stand behind the teacher.
โNow, to our prom queenโฆโ he repeated the pause from before. โItโs my honor to say this. Y/N!โ
You blinked, the spotlight turning toward you and your shocked face. Martin went to you quickly, taking your crown and putting it on top of your head. He threw the cushion away to take your hand, interwining your fingers.
โWas this planned?โ you said, laughing, slightly red from embarrassment.
โI donโt know. But I guess that makes you my queen tonight, huh?โ he teased.
โDonโt push your luck,โ you smiled.
โNow, the king and the queen will slow dance. Students, the floor is yours.โ The crowd began to sway, and Martin offered his hand, his usual cockiness melting.
โMay I have this dance, Your Majesty?โ
You tried not to laugh as you placed your hand in his. โFine. But donโt step on my dress.โ
โIโll try my best,โ he said, grinning.
As you both stood in the middle, his hands sat at your waist politely. Thanks to the heels, you could reach enough to wrap your arms around his neck, fingers playing with the back of his hair.
โCanโt believe I came with the queen of prom.โ
โSay the king himself, I think we are both lucky,โ he smiled. Neither of you spoke for a moment; the song made you replay some memories you had with your friends, and soon enough, with Martin.
โYou know,โ he murmured finally. โI never really liked dances, even more the ones where my mom used to force me to go for her work.โ
You looked up, amused. โWhyโs that?โ
โBecause I never had anyone worth dancing with.โ Since you didnโt know what to say, you let yourself sway with him. Your head rested lightly against his chest.
You didnโt even realize that your friends and more couples joined in. You noticed when the music started to fade away. Martin cursed under his breath, looking at you.
โIs it time for your performance?โย ย
โYeah, Iโll be back. I promise,โ he took your hands from his neck, kissing the top of them before going to the stage. You looked to your left, seeing Yujin and Leeseo smiling at you.
โWhat are you thinking?โ you sighed, lovestruck.
โOn how I will confess to him after this.โ Both of them stopped their moves, the tap of the mic being tested rebounding on the gymnasium.ย
โWe still have a little more than half an hour to end this night. And before we wrap up, letโs welcome CORTIS to the stage.โ
The applause was quick to come, them moving on the stage, exchanging nods between them. Martin stepped forward while everyone got their instruments ready.
โHey, everyone,โ he said. โWe didnโt plan to play tonight, but this is our last time together before we graduate. Soโฆ this is for all of you. For the friend who stuck around, the teacher who, although I knew I wasnโt particularly his favorite student,โ the place laughed softly. โThey still listened and advised us with warm hearts.โ
He paused for a minute, looking at the boys whose eyes were probably as glossy as his. โThis is not the end, but a little break before we go all in. Keonho. Seonghyeon, hope we can play at your graduation, and thank you for trusting the band.โ
They started with two of their own songs, dancing along with everyone and screaming the songs at the top of their lungs. Energy was never missed when it came to them, even more since they played like it was the last thing theyโd ever do, and maybe in a way, it was.
When the applause finally died down, Martin took a sip of water with his members, stepping back to the mic afterward.
โThankโโ
โWait!โ James stopped Martin, who was as confused as the rest of the place, minus the four boys. โThereโs one more song.โ
Martin walked to him with the rest behind them, covering his mic with his palm. Quickly returning after some clarification.
โThis is a surprise,โ he stated. โI wasnโt supposed to release this song this soon. I want to thank you guys for creating the instrumental and letting me perform this, and I want to thank my muse for inspiring me to write this song. This is called โEverlongโโ
The keyboards started, his voice filled the room, and after a couple of verses, Seonghyeon joined.
"And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang."
You simply stood there, digesting the lyrics while people danced to the beat. You didnโt cry until the last note faded, applauding with a smile on your face. Yujin and Leeseo stood to your sides and then watched the boys on stage, officially tearing up.
You feel bad to realize how loved you were by your friends, and how much you had taken Martinโs silent warmth for granted.ย He was loud and proud about his feelings for you, even if the tactic at first wasnโt that clear; he later never let you forget you mattered. In moments like this, you finally saw the depth beneath his jokes.ย
You went to the refreshment table after the set, drinking some soda to calm yourself down.
โThere you are,โ you heard his voice. He was still a little breathless, and his jacket was on his arms, his shirt sleeves rolled higher.ย
You smiled, suddenly a wave of nerves rushing through your body at his presence. It was now or never, โI want you to come with me.โ
โWhereโโ
โI have to tell you something.โ You grabbed his hand, he instinctively looked at it, and softly bit the smile that was threatening to show.
โShow me the way.โ You led him to your table, grabbing your clutch and leaving your crown. You passed the chatter through the back doors that opened onto the empty football field. The night air was crisp, and the stars were faint, but somehow still visible and giving a nice glow to the night.
You stopped standing on one of the bleachers in the field so you could be slightly higher, letting go of his hand to turn toward him.
He smiled, a little confused. โY/N, if this is about the songโโ
โItโs not,โ you said, heart hammering. โOkay, maybe it is.โ
โOh my God, do you feel embarrassed? I didnโt mean toโโ
โI know what you meant,โ you interrupted softly. โAnd youโre right.โ
He frowned slightly. โRight about what?โ
You exhale. โThat everything feels real when itโs with you.โ
You decided to step down the bleachers on time. โI didnโt even realize it at first because I truly believed you were just annoying me, to throw me off and my record. But then you started showing upโnot just for meโto everyone. And every time you did, I found myself noticing more.โ
โLikeโฆ?โ
โThe way you smile when something finally works for you, how you live your life with no regrets, and how your heart is so pure that you donโt even care if the other person hates you. You are there.โ
You took a shaky breath, your hand clutching your purse more. โAnd somewhere between wanting to hate you and trying not to fall for you. I did.โ
โYes,โ a small laugh broke through at his pure face of disbelief. โI fell for you, Martin Edwards.โ
You could see his throat bob as he swallowed hard, his voice a little rough when he finally spoke.ย
โSay it again,โ he said softly.
โWhat?โ
โMy name. Like that.โ His lips curved upward, shy and boyish at the same time. โIt sounds so pretty when you say it.โ
Your cheeks warmed instantly. โYouโre unbelievable.โ
He chuckled, getting closer to the bleachers, looking up at you. โYou have no idea how long Iโve been waiting to hear thatโwell, not that exactly, but close.โ
โI can imagine it after you told me that night.โ
โWhich, by the way, were those two years of you calling me a nuisance, giving me detention, pretending you didn't look for me at every assembly?โ
You laughed, โI had to check if I was going to get called out because of you.โ
โI noticed at a distance since you were the only person who actually saw me, even when you swore you couldnโt stand me.โ
The wind picked up, making the bleachers creak and your hair sweep across your face. Your hands went to your arms, blaming yourself for being so forgetful and not picking up your sweater from the table. He stood on the deck of the bleacher, and his jacket was quickly placed over your shoulders.
And just what you thought, he reached out and tucked your hair behind your ear again, with he difference that his hand stayed on your cheek, his thumb caressing your skin.
โI didnโt mean to fall for you either,โ he admitted, looking down.ย โBut I did. And I donโt regret a second of it.โ
You smiled before reaching into your clutch, hand trembling, and pulled out an envelope.
โI was supposed to wait until tomorrow when we go to Yujinโs house,โ you said, โbut I canโt.โ
He took it, puzzled, and watched what it contained. His eyes widened the second he saw the tickets, audibly gasping.
โThereโs no wayโโ
โTwo tickets to see Linkin Park in Seoul,โ you smiled nervously. โConsider it a date. Come with me on Friday, and donโt say โmaybeโ.โ
He reached for your hands. โYou really are something else.โ
โSomething good?โ you teased.
He looked at the sky. โYou are something out of this world. God, youโreโโ
Before he could finish, you leaned up on your tiptoes, your hand finding his tie to pull him down just like before, but this time, you didnโt hesitate.
Your lips brushed his, his breath caught, and then he kissed you back, gentle at first, as if afraid to break the moment. You froze for half a second, feeling your heart pounding so hard you could almost hear it over the faint music coming from the gym.ย
Your nose bumped his, your fingers trembled against his chest, but Martin didnโt care. He smiled into the kiss, pulling back only enough to whisper. โWow,โ
You nodded, breathless at how his eyes were looking so fondly at you. โThat was my first.โ
His eyes softened. โGood. Then Iโm glad it was me.โ
You didnโt even realize you were smiling until he rested his forehead against yours, both of you laughing quietly for no reason other than sheer disbelief.
โOH MY GOD!โ
You jumped apart. From the edge of the field, a cluster of silhouettes waved frantically like South Korea two years ago for the World Cup. You hid your face on the curve that connected his neck and shoulder, his arms engulfing you.
โFinally!โ Leeseo hissed, hugging Yujin happily while he had a smile on his face.
โPay up, Seonghyeon.โ James snickered, waving a few bills.ย
โIt took you three years, love your perseverance!โ Juhoon screamed, and you couldnโt help but laugh from your spot.
โWorth the wait!โ Yujin yelled, pretending to wipe fake tears.
You covered your face, groaning. โThey were watching?!โ
Martin just laughed, โOf course they were. They were looking at us from the gym.โ
He turned toward them, raising your joined hands like a victory gesture. The others erupted in cheers, chanting both your names like a ridiculous anthem.
โAlso, did I just hear โPay upโ?โ Martin raised his shoulder, giving away the answer. You huffed, โCanโt believe theyโve been betting on us.โ
โYeah,โ he murmured. โAnd for once, I donโt mind losing.โ
You shook your head, laughing despite yourself. โYouโre ridiculous.โ
He looked back at you, his eyes were full of every emotion you were both feeling. โRidiculously in love with you.โ
And before you could think twice, he leaned in again, slower this time, just enough for your lashes to brush his cheek, for you to close your eyes and let the world spin quietly around you.
You didnโt even care if your friends were still watching.
Because under the silver lights of the empty field, with his jacket around your shoulders, hands on your waist, and your heart in a state of pure bliss, everything finally made sense.
And for onceโin the middle of all the noiseโyou didnโt feel like you had to be perfect. You just felt real.
Just like him.
Just like everlong.

Eom Seonghyeon. He sat next to you in physics and math. At first glance, he looked like every other campus pretty boy. Which sounds corny, but there really wasn't any other way to describe him. He was pretty. He was tall. He was loud, with the kind of smile that spread before you even realized you were smiling back.
Everyone knew him.
Not because he was particularly popular, though he was. It was because he was friendly. Ridiculously so. Walking across campus with Seonghyeon meant adding at least five extra minutes to wherever you were going. Every few steps, someone would wave him over. A classmate, someone who he gave his notes to or someone from the football club you'd never met.
He was also the biggest nerd you knew. The first time you sat next to him was in math. You zoned out looking at a problem. He slowly leaned in closer to your sheet as he held his hand out. You glanced at him confused. He simply pointed at your pencil.ย
โYou know how to solve this?โย
He simply nodded before tapping the pencil on the sheet. โUse the power rule here.โ He said as he drew an arrow on your sheet. โYou're taking the derivative, not the integral.โ He scribbled his words down beside the arrow, marking it with a little star on top. For the rest of the class, he explained your concepts better than the teacher.ย
After that day, you sat next to him during math and physics. And he seemed to not mind at all.ย
You tapped his shoulder, โSeonghyeon, what do I do now?โย
He glanced at your sheet, โtake the horizontal and vertical components separately, itโs easier.โ
Amidst solving, you realised you never asked him if it's ok for you to sit beside him. โSeonghyeon?โ
โHm?โ
โIs it okay if I sit beside you?โย
He chuckled, โYou always sit beside me, why ask now?โย
You glanced at him before looking back down at your notebook. โIn case you sat with someone else.โย
โNah, I donโt have many friends.โย
You scoffed, โSeriously?โ
He tilted his head, glancing at you for a second, โNot as many as you think.โย
โYou say hi to like 50 people everyday.โ
โJust because Iโm friendly with them doesnโt mean I'm close to them.โ
For someone so smart, he was incredibly dense and utterly oblivious to the fact that you liked him. He never noticed how you saved a seat for him. Never noticed the extra pen you carried for him because he always threw his pens into his bagโalways struggling to pick it up from the bottom of his book-filled bag.ย Maybe he noticed, maybe he just thought you were being nice. Either way, it was starting to drive you insane.
So you did what any perfectly rational person would do.
You made a list. A list to make this nerd, your nerd.
It wasnโt supposed to be serious. Just something stupid youโd tell your friend every night.ย
You: Seonghyeon really likes hot vanilla latte. So cute right?
Iroha: Girl itโs a vanilla latte, the fuck are you on?
And slowly, the list grew. Grew into something that looked like this:
1) Asking him to explain something, not because you donโt know. But because of the way he lights up.
Seonghyeon was a nerd. That much had already been established. Apart from patiently walking you through calculus and physics every other day, you'd noticed something else while walking to the cafeteria together. You randomly asked, โWhy does plastic turn white when bent?โย
He stopped walking. Like actually stopped walking. You turned around only to find him staring at you with a big smile on his face. You couldn't help but smile back. Your eyebrows furrowed, โWhat?โ
โIโm glad you asked.โย
For the remaining 20 minutes of recess, you were being schooled on polymers and how light reflects differently on different types of polymers.
2) Have his favourite acai toppings memorised.
Seonghyeon insited that toppings on acai didn't matter.
ย โThey all taste the sameโ
They didn't.
Because every single time his bowl came with blueberries, strawberries and banana, there'd be the tiniest smile on his face before he took the first bite. So it became routine for you to stop by the nearest cafe. Always grabbing him an acai bowl without being told to do so.ย
3) Always tell him how helpful the little notes he scribbles on your notebook.
Seonghyeon has a habit of noting down stuff besides problems he doesn't get or messes up. He has a system. When itโs something trivialโa common mistake like the humble โzโ turning into a 2 mid-equation. It got starred once.ย
โ watch your handwriting. Donโt rush
The number of stars increased as the mistake revolved around something he didnโt understand. The maximum being 3. Two stars for when it was a concept he didnโt grasp initially and 3 for something he needed to go through all over again.ย
So whenever something he taught you was on the exam. Majorly the whole exam. Youโd run up to him, jumping excitedly as you said, โYour little notes helped!โย
Sometimes during classes heโd lean over to see what youโre doing and smile despite himself whenever he saw you follow his system. And with how much he helps you, you gave him a nickname. Calling him professor whenever you need his help.
4) Text him something stupid and let him overthink it.
Seonghyeon may be the most outgoing, loud and friendly person you have ever met. But when friendships carry more than saying-hi-in-the-corridor value to him, he overthinks all of his actions.ย
Once around 3 a.m you texted him, would u still send me notes if i was a worm?
You were left on seen for 20 minutes. Not because he ignored you, but because he drafted 5 messages before finally sending you one which was still, insanely unhinged.ย
Another time, you asked him if fishes ever get thirsty
Not only did he reply 20 minutes later, he also called you up immediately after. You spent the whole night listening to him research about this. Itโs safe to say, if anyone ever asks him this againโtheyโll receive his infamous nerd-out sessions.
5) Compliment him, not his looks.
Seonghyeonโs gorgeous, no surprise there. Walking around campus with him meant girls turning their heads in attempts to seek just one more glance at him. Needless to say, he too knew he was handsome. He was told so multiple times daily. By a random woman on the bus, by his friends, even teachers.ย
So why would you compliment his features like everyone else?ย
Instead, you complimented the way he thought.ย
You watched as he solved a sum for you. He scooted his chair closer, leaning in as he went on and on about various ways to go about this sum. Frankly, you werenโt listening. You rested your head on the table, spacing out staring at him.ย
โYou could always evaluate the limit first. Oh! You can alsoโโ his eyes landed on you. You were staring up at him. Your eyes never leaving his face. Heat crept to his neck, his ears visibly red. โWhat?โย
You hummed, slowly sitting straight. โHow do you think like this?โย
He blinked, โWhat do you mean?โย
โYou seem to solve complex questions so easily. Itโs crazy how you think this way you know.โย
Watching him go quiet and be all flustered in a way he never is was something you could never get tired of.
6) Taking care of him when he forgets to.
Exam season always hit him too hard. He had a title to carry. People always expected Seonghyeons name to be on top of the grade listings. During exam season, heโd always sleep less, eat less and stress a lot more than he should.ย
Youโd watch him spend 12 hours straight in the library. No breaks. Not even to drink water. So, you always stopped by with takeout. Sitting beside him as you sweeped his notebooks and ipad to the side. Slamming the bag of food on the table.ย
โEat.โ
โBut I havenโtโโ
โEat.โย
You never gave him an option.ย
7) Always steal his jackets in the winter.
You always โforgotโ to carry something to throw on in the winter. The cool breeze hits you and Seonghyeon the second you both step out the campus. Involuntarily, both your hands start rubbing your arms, trying to warm yourself up. Seonghyeonโs gaze lingers on you for a while, before he takes a layer off.ย
He wraps his jacket around you, โHere.โ
โHyeon, you donโt have to itโs okay.โ You say, taking the jacket off of your back. You extend your hand forward, โYouโll get cold.โย
He simply pushes your hand back as he starts walking. โI have a sweater on, all youโre wearing is a tank top.โ You run, catching up to him. โWhat kind of idiot wears a tank top in the winters?โย
You whine, โThe library has heaters!โย
Before giving him his jacket back, you made sure to spray an excessive amount of your perfume on it. Just enough that anyone standing a little too close would wonder why Eom Seonghyeon smelled like a girl instead of laundry detergent. And when he threw his jacket on while roaming with his friends. He was bombarded with questions.ย
โWhy do you smell like a girl?โ Juhoon asked.ย
James leaned in closer to Seonghyeon, sniffing the jacket thoroughly. โYou smell like Yn.โ
To which Seonghyeon didnโt respond, but his flushed face said it all.ย
8) Let him talk about his family and actually listen.
Seonghyeon was an older brother. Which explained why he acted more like a second parent than a sibling half the time. He worried too much, overthought everything and somehow always found himself asking you what to do whenever it involved his younger sister. "I don't know what to tell her," he'd sighed one afternoon, resting his chin in his palm. "That guy's not serious about her."
You looked up from your notes. "Make a pros and cons list with her."
He blinked. "...A pros and cons list?"
"You like lists."
A laugh escaped him. "Fair enough."
About a week later, he walked into class looking noticeably lighter. You barely got the chance to say good morning before asking, "Something good happen?"
"My sister finally broke up with him."
"Oh." You smiled to yourself before returning to your notes. "I'm glad."
He ended up talking about it for the rest of lunch. A month later, the two of you were studying in the library when you looked up from your laptop. "Have you figured out what you're getting your parents for their anniversary?"
His pencil stopped moving. "...You remembered that?"
You frowned. "You told me."
"I know, but..." He scratched the back of his neck, suddenly avoiding your gaze. "You actually remembered."
You only smiled before pushing your physics worksheet towards him. "So, are you going to help me with this question or not?"
He let out a quiet laugh, still smiling to himself as he reached for your pencil.
9) Let him see you sad.
Not because you want comfort, but because you want him to know that itโs okay for him to be vulnerable around you too. You'd spent months watching him carry everyone else's worries on his shoulders. His sister's problems, exam stress, group projects, friends asking him for help every five minutes. Yet somehow, whenever you asked him how he was doing, his answer was always the same. "I'm okay."
You wondered if anyone had ever shown him that he didn't always have to be.
The chemistry exam had gone horribly. Not just badly, horribly.
By the time you got to the library, you'd already convinced yourself you'd failed. Your calculus worksheet sat open in front of you, but you'd been staring at the same question for nearly ten minutes, pencil unmoving. "You've been on that derivative for a while."
You looked up. Seonghyeon stood beside your chair, backpack slung over one shoulder. "I'm just... kinda sad about the chemistry exam." You smiled, but it didnโt quite reach your eyes. "Nothing else."
He studied your face for a second before nodding. "Wait here."
"Huh?"
He was already gone. A few minutes later, he came back carrying your favourite chocolate and quietly placed it on top of your notebook. "You forgot to eat."
You blinked. "...Chocolate?"
He rubbed the back of his neck. "I figured it'd help."
Your fingers curled around it. "You didn't have to."
"Don't worry about the chemistry test." He smiled, the same reassuring smile he'd worn the first day he'd taught you the power rule. "You're smart. It's one exam."
Before you could answer, he reached over and gently patted your head. Your heart practically stopped. "You really didn't have to do all this."
"I wanted to." He shrugged like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "You always look after me." His smile softened. "Let me return the favour."
For someone who spent so much time taking care of everyone else...It was nice to know someone wanted to take care of him, too.
10) Make the first move cus u a girlboss.
Because he won't, not because he doesn't want to. He's just spent so long convincing himself he was imagining it that he'd rather die than risk getting it wrong. It was almost two in the morning by the time the two of you finally gave up. The calculus question you'd spent nearly forty minutes arguing over turned out to be wrong in the answer key. "You've got to be kidding me."
"I refuse to believe I lost sleep over a typo."
It was only fair the two of you walked across the street to the convenience store. Energy drinks for him. Chocolate milk for you. Maybe something sweet to make up for how tired you both were. Halfway through paying, rain hammered against the windows. By the time you stepped outside, it had turned into a downpour. "...Fuck." You looked over. "I don't have an umbrella."
You lifted your drink. "Me neither."
Neither of you moved. The tiny awning barely covered the entrance, rain splashing onto your shoes every time the wind picked up. Cars drove past, headlights reflecting off the wet pavement. You tilted your head back. "The moon's pretty tonight."
Seonghyeon followed your gaze before laughing quietly. "You can only see part of it because the sunlight's hittingโ"
You stopped listening. For the first time since you'd met him, you stopped listening. Instead, you watched the way his eyes lit up whenever he explained something. The way his hands moved without him realizing. The tiny crease between his brows whenever he was trying to find the right words.
Cute.
God.
He was so unbelievably cute.
Before your brain could catch up, your hand had already reached for the front of his jacket. He blinked, sentence dying halfway through. "Hm?"
You stepped closer. Close enough to see the few raindrops that got caught in his hair because of the air blowing the drops. Close enough that his breathing faltered.
"Seonghyeon."
"...Yeah?"
You looked up at him. "Can I kiss you?"
His ears turned pink, he didn't say anything for a while. He just stared. And then, a tiny nod.
You smiled. "Use your words."
"...Yes."
You rose onto your tiptoes, one hand still clutching the front of his jacket, and kissed him. His hand caressed your cheek. The kiss was slow and gentle, the type of kiss that blurred out the sounds of everything happening in a distance.ย
When you pulled away, Seonghyeon hadn't moved an inch. He simply stood there, eyes wide, face completely red. You couldn't help laughing. "Got nothing to say?"
He blinked, then covered his face with one hand. "Hold on. I can't think."

synopsis: you had initially thought martin edwards was your typical rockstar, collecting girls like they were trophies on a daily, but you soon realised how wrong you were.
To be a rockstar's girlfriend you needed to be many things: prepared for the intruding eyes of the public, ready for the endless girls throwing themselves at your boyfriend's feet, but most of allโif you wanted him completely obsessedโyou needed to be cooler than him.
For a star like Martin Edwards, that was a tall order. Lead singer of his band, his face plastered across every magazine, his voice the anthem of a generation. He'd never publicly acknowledged a relationship, never shown interest in anyone. The endless fangirls bordering on stalkers made him paranoidโhe'd rather be alone than risk letting a stranger in. He'd built his career on being untouchable, the kind of guy who left girls crying in their bedrooms, not the other way around.
Paris Fashion Week wasn't his scene at all. He'd almost skipped it, told his manager to shove the invitation somewhere unpleasant, but something pulled him there, a restless itch he couldn't explain, a feeling that he'd miss something important if he didn't go.
He came decked in black: scuffed combat boots, leather trousers that hugged his thighs, a faded CORTIS tour tee from two years ago. He looked bored, slouched in his front-row seat like he'd rather be anywhere else, fingers drumming against his knee as models glided by in designer gowns and sky-high heels. The music was too polished, the lights too bright, the whole affair too clean for his taste. He was about to get up and leave when you emerged.
You walked the runway like you owned it, wearing stunning floor-length gown in champagne silk that caught every light, a slit that went dangerously high, heels so sharp they could kill a man. You didn't smile, didn't wave, instead you moved like you were born for this, shoulders back, chin high, utterly untouchable.
His jaw went slack and his drumming fingers stilled. For the first time in years, Martin Edwards was speechless. His mind was hollow, entirely empty of any rational thought that would have been screaming at him to snap out of it before his reputation of being untouchable is completely destroyed. Instead there was one simple line repeating like a mantra.
He needed you. He needed you more than he'd ever needed anything.
You didn't look at him once. Your gaze swept over the front row like they were furniture, as though he was just another piece of decor, and that only made it worse.
At the end of the runway, you turned. For a split second, your eyes met his. You lifted one eyebrow by just a fractionโa flicker of curiosity, a silent questionโbefore your expression smoothed back to perfect neutrality and you were gone, disappearing behind the velvet curtains.
He didn't even remember the rest of the show. He sat there like a statue, his mind replaying that single moment in an endless loop.
What he didn't know was that it had all been photographed. By morning, his slack-jawed, lovesick stare was splashed across every tabloid and newspaper in the country.
"ROCKSTAR RAVENOUS! Martin Edwards' Heart Snatched by Parisian Mystery Muse!" Screamed the front page of The Sun, complete with a grainy photo of his stunned face. "WHO IS THE SIREN IN HEELS?" Demanded the Daily Mail. Even the fashion magazines got in on it: Vogue ran a two-page spread speculating about the mysterious model who'd made the โPrince of Darknessโ lose his cool, complete with freeze-frames of that one eyebrow raise.
Martin sat in his hotel room the next evening staring at his own exposed face on every newsstand. The mask he'd worn for yearsโthe untouchable, brooding rockstarโwas gone. Everyone had seen him unravel in real time.
A slow grin spread across his face as he scanned the endless pages.
Good. Now youโd know exactly who was coming for you.
Two weeks later, you arrived back in New York following the event, doing everything in your power to try to forget the weird rockstar who stared at you like you'd personally ruined his life. You were in your penthouse apartment, a copy of Paper magazine with his lovesick face plastered across it on your marble coffee table. Your agent had been calling nonstop, thrilled about the publicity, already scheming about how to leverage it for your next campaign.ย
Your phone suddenly began ringing and you almost ignored it entirely, tired of the constant need for people to speak to you, but something pushed you to pick up.
"Hello?"
A low voice, rough and amused, crackled through the receiver. "That was a hell of a walk. Almost made me forget my own name."
You instantly froze. You knew that voiceโyouโd heard it enough times on the radio, on MTV, blasting from cars in traffic. The voice of a generation, the voice of every teenage girl's bedroom wall.
"Martin Edwards," you said flatly, sinking onto your velvet chaise. "How the hell did you get my number?"
"You're a model," he replied, like that explainef everything. "I'm a rockstar. I have people."
"You have stalkers, you mean."
He laughed a genuine, surprised sound, not the polished chuckle he typically gives interviews. "Yeah, maybe. But I'm not a stalker, I'm just..." He paused and you bit your lip slightly, unsure on why the silence made you nervous. "Determined."
You should have hung up and slammed the phone down and called your doorman to make sure no one gets past the lobby. You knew exactly what this was: a rockstar with a new fixation, chasing the next shiny thing, bored of groupies and looking for a challenge.
"Listen, rockstar," you said, your voice dropping to something cold and sharp. "I don't do groupies, I don't do fans, and I definitely don't do men who think they can just call me up because they saw me on a runway."
Silence came from his end. Then, quietly: "I don't want a fan. I want you."
"You don't know me."
"Then let me."
You chewed your lip, staring at your reflection in the dark window of your apartmentโthe skyline glittered before you, the city that never sleeps hummed twenty floors below. You've dated musicians before and it's always a disaster: the cheating, the lies, the constant parade of women throwing themselves at them. Martin Edwards was the biggest of them all. A tabloid regular; a walking red flag in scuffed boots and leather.
Though there was a rawness in his voice that caught you off guard and made you pause.
"I'm busy," you answeref, though the slight smile you were attempting to suppress suggested differently.
"Friday. 8pm. I'll send a car."
"I didn't say yes."
"You didn't say no."
You hung up before he could say anything else, but you made sure to write his number down on a scrap of paper incase he ever called again. Just in case.
Friday night arrived and you put on a silk black slip dress with barely there straps. The stretch of fabric falling just above your knee and you added strappy heels that made your legs look endless, folowed by a delicate necklace before you styled your hair loose and glossy.
You looked in the mirror and reminded yourself that you didnโt care what rockstar Martin Edwards thought of you, he was the same as every other male musician that latched onto women for a few weeks before getting bored.
You smoothed down the dress one last time, adjusting the thin straps on your shoulders before grabbing a small clutch, slipping your phone inside and taking a breath.
The town car waited outside your building, sleek and black, a driver holding the door open like this was completely normal. You slid into the leather backseat and watched the city blur past as he drove you downtown.
The jazz bar was hidden in the Village, tucked away behind an unmarked door you would have walked right past if the driver hadn't pointed it out. Inside, it was all exposed brick and dim amber light, a saxophone player in the corner crooning something slow and sad. The place was intimate, almost empty, a few couples scattered at tables alongside a bartender polishing glasses.
And there he was.
Martin Edwards sat in a corner booth, dressed down in a simple black sweater and dark jeans, his hair pushed back from his face. His fingers tapped against the tabletop in a restless rhythm, and when he saw you approach, he stood up so fast he nearly knocked over his drink.
"You came," he said, genuine surprise in his voice.
"You sent a car. It seemed rude to waste gas."
He grinned at your words. "I'll take it."
You slid into the booth across from him, crossing your legs, the slit of your dress falling open just slightly.ย
"So," you said, leaning back. "What's your angle?"
"No angle."
"Bullshit."
He laughed, running a hand through his hair. "I don't have an angle. I just saw you on that runway and couldn't stop thinking about you. That's it. That's the whole thing."
"You havenโt even asked for my name."
"I already know it's Y/N."
You tilted your head, studying him. He wasn't performing for youโnot the way he performed on stage, not the way he performed in interviews. He was just here, nervous but trying.
"Okay," you said slowly. "One drink. If you bore me I'm gone."
"Deal."
You ended up staying until the bar closed. He didn't bore you. Instead he made you laugh whilst looking at you like you were the only person in the room, and when he walked you to your door at 3am, he didn't try to come in. He just stood there, hands in his pockets, memorising every detail of you with a slight smirk residing on his lips.
"Same time next week?" He asked, tilting his head just a fraction.
You should have said no and walked inside and forgotten this ever happened. Instead, you smiled. "Maybe."
Safe to say, Martin Edwards was a hard man to shake.
He had a way of appearing when you least expected him: a bouquet of peonies delivered to your apartment the morning after your first date, a handwritten note slipped under your door alongside it that revealed far more emotional depth than a rockstar of his realm should technically possess. He called you at odd hours from the road, his voice rough and tired, just to hear you say goodnight. He sent you playlists filled with unreleased songs he'd recorded himself that were burned onto discs, his voice cracking over stolen lyrics he'd rewritten just for you.
He was relentless, and worse, he was charming.
It started small with a dinner here and a walk there. He took you to dive bars and rooftop restaurants, to galleries and late-night diners. He never brought you to anything flashy, never paraded you around like a trophy. He kept you hidden, protected, his own private secret in a world that wanted to consume him.
You let him do it all because despite every instinct screaming at you to run, to protect yourself from the inevitable heartbreak of dating a rockstar, Martin Edwards made it impossible to resist.
He remembered everythingโyour coffee order, your favourite movie, the way you liked your eggs in the morning. He learned the exact pressure of his hand on your lower back that made you shiver when he guided you through crowds. He learned the exact rhythm of your breathing when you fell asleep on his chest.
He was careful with you in a way you hadn't expected.
And slowly, without even realising it, you fell.
Within two months of knowing you Martin was already inviting you backstage to his shows, keeping you hidden and protected from the intruding crowd. It was at one of these shows when he had pulled you behind a pillar, the rest of the world becoming nonexistent as his arms wrapped around your waist and pulled you tightly against him, his forehead dropping to uour shoulder.
You hesitated for a moment before reaching your hand up and letting your fingers sift through his strands, the sigh of relief he let out showing you were doing the right thing.ย
The two of you remained in that position much longer than what was considered normal, though neither of you cared, too swept up in the moment.
Eventually you heard him say something, his words muffled against your jacket.
โWhat?โ You asked softly, a small smile resting on your lips. He lifted his head up, his hair standing up in multiple directions from all your ruffling, and he very much did not look like the hardcore rockstar many of his fans saw him to be.
"I said," he murmured, his voice rough, "I think I'm in trouble."
You raised an eyebrow. "What kind of trouble?"
"The kind where I can't stop thinking about you." He reached up, his fingers brushing a strand of hair from your face, tucking it behind your ear as you felt your cheeks redden just slightly at the gesture. "The kind where I don't want to be on stage unless I know you're watching. The kind where I wake up and the first thing I do is reach for you, even when you're not there."
Your heart stuttered in your chest, your gaze softening at his words. "Martinโ"
"I know it's fast. I know we've only known each other two months. I know you probably think I'm just some rockstar who gets bored easily and moves on to the next thing." He let out a breath, his forehead dropping back to your shoulder. "But you're not the next thing, you're the only thing for me."
You stood there, frozen, his body pressed against yours, his words echoing in your head. Two months was nothing, barely enough time to know someone properly and let alone fall for them.
But you already knew him. You knew the way he took his coffee, that he hummed when he was concentrating, even how his eyes lit up when he talked about a new song he was writing. You knew the shadows under his eyes when he hadn't slept, that his fingers tapped against every surface like he was always composing something. You knew he looked at you like you were something precious he was terrified of losing.
And you knew, with absolute certainty, that you were already in too deep.
"Martin," you said softly, your fingers finding their way back to his hair, threading through the dark strands. "Look at me."
He lifted his head, his eyes meeting yours, and he looked nervous. Martin Edwards, the man who commanded thousands of screaming fans night after night, looked nervous.
"I'm not going anywhere," you said quietly. "You're not going to lose me."
His breath caught. "You mean that?"
"I mean it."
He stared at you for a long moment, searching your eyes for something: doubt, hesitation, a lie; he found none.
He slowly moved forward and his lips brushed against yours so softly you could barely feel them, and you realised in that moment he was afraid you'd pull away.
You did nothing of the sort and instead leaned into him, your fingers curling in his hair, pulling him closer. His arms tightened around your waist, and you felt the tension drain from his body as he melted into you.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against yours, his breath coming in short, uneven gasps whilst his eyes remained closed.
"Y/N," he whispered, your name falling from his lips like a prayer.
"I'm here," you said softly. "I'm not going anywhere."
He opened his eyes, and the look in them made your heart ache. It was raw and open and completely unguarded.
"I've neverโ" He stopped, shaking his head. "I've never felt like this before. I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know how to do this."
"Neither do I," you admitted. "But we can figure it out together."
He smiled then, his grin reaching his eyes and making him look younger and lighter than how he appeared on the many magazines you absolutely did not keep hidden in your bedside table. "Together?"
"Together."
He kissed you again, softer this timeโif that were even possible, as though he was sealing a promise. His hands cupped your face, his thumbs brushing your cheekbones, and you felt like the only person in the world.
When he pulled back, he was grinning. "I'm going to be so annoying now, you know that, right? The whole band is going to hate me. I'm not going to shut up about you."
You laughed, shoving his chest lightly. "You're already annoying."
"True." He pulled you back into his arms, burying his face in your hair. "But now I'm annoying and in love."
You could only smile against his shoulder at that, closing your eyes and letting the feel of him engulf your entire being.
From then on, Martin was yours and you were his, as hard as it was when you were constantly on opposite sides of the world. The distance was brutal: weeks apart, time zones that made calls nearly impossible, schedules that never seemed to align, but Martin made it work. He called you every night, no matter where he was or what time it was. He sent you handwritten letters filled with lyrics he'd scribbled in the margins of hotel notepads. He showed up at your apartment unannounced, exhausted and rumpled, just to hold you for a few hours before catching another flight.
You did the same for him. You flew across oceans to watch him perform, sitting in the shadows of the crowd, hidden beneath caps and sunglasses, just to see him do what he loved. You called him when you couldn't sleep, when the loneliness of your hotel room became too much and everything made you think of him.
It wasn't easyโthere were nights you cried, overwhelmed by the distance, the secrecy, and the weight of loving someone the world wasn't supposed to know about, and there were nights Martin called you, his voice rough and raw, confessing how much he missed you followed by how much he hated being so far away.
But you always found your way back to each other, and every time you did, it was like no time had passed at all.
The public eventually found out, and it was entirely inevitable, to be completely honest. You'd been as careful as two people in the public eye could be, but you weren't as invisible or untouchable as you had thought. Eventually the paparazzi, relentless and all-seeing, caught a glimpse of what you'd been trying so hard to protect.
It started with a photo: the two of you in a hotel lobby in London, his hand intertwined with yours, your head tilted back in laughter as he whispered something in your ear. It was grainy, taken from too far away, but it was unmistakably the two of you.
The next morning, the image was everywhere.
"ROCKSTAR'S SECRET LOVE AFFAIR EXPOSED!" was printed on every newspaper in the country. Your face was plastered across every newsstand, every television screen, every gossip column. Your agent's phone rang off the hook for hours on end; stranngers on the street recognised you, whispering behind their hands, pointing and staring like you were a spectacle.
You'd known this day would come, youโd prepared for it, even braced yourself for it, but nothing could have prepared you for the sheer weight of it: the invasion, the scrutiny, the sudden loss of privacy that came with being publicly linked to Martin Edwards.
You sat atop his bed in a London hotel room, the many magazines spread out in front of you as you sifted through one, your fingers tracing the grainy image of the two of you in the lobby. Your own face stared back at you, frozen in a moment of laughter, his hand wrapped around yours. It felt strange, seeing yourself reduced to a headline and a piece of gossip for strangers to consume without a care in the world about you as an actual person.
You heard the bathroom door creak open behind you, the air shifting as Martin emerged with his pyjamas sitting loose on his frame and his hair still damp, curling slightly at the ends. He crossed the room in a few quiet steps, and before you could look up, his hands were on the magazine, gently pulling it from your grasp.
"Heyโ" you started to protest, but he tossed it aside, not caring where it landed.
Then he climbed onto the bed, his weight settling over you as he lay on top of you, his body pressing yours into the mattress. He was warm and solid, still smelling like soap and steam, and you let out a breathless laugh as you tried to shove at his shoulders.
"Martin, you're too heavy," you complained, but you were giggling, your hands flattening against his chest. "Get off."
He didn't move. Instead, he buried his face in the curve of your neck, his breath warm against your skin. "No," he murmured, the word muffled. "I'm staying here forever. This is my new home."
"Your new home is crushing me."
"Good, you're not going anywhere."
You laughed again, your fingers finding their way into his damp hair, threading through the damp strands. "You're ridiculous."
"I'm in love," he corrected, lifting his head just enough to look at you, his lips just grazing your chin. His eyes were soft and searching your own. "And I'm not letting a bunch of magazines ruin that."
Your smile faded slightly, the weight of everything pressing down on you again. "Martinโ"
"I know," he said quietly, cutting you off. "I know it's a lot. I know they're going to be everywhere now. I know they're going to try to tear us apart." He reached up, brushing a strand of hair from your face. "But I don't care about any of it, all I care about is you."
You stared at him, your heart swelling. "You really mean that?"
"I really mean it." He leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. "I love you, Y/N, and I'm not going to let anyone take that away from us."
You wrapped your arms around him, pulling him closer, and he let out a soft sigh of relief against your skin. The magazines lay forgotten on the floor, their headlines screaming about secrets and scandals, but neither of you paid them any attention.
In that moment, there was only the two of you.
"You're still crushing me," you murmured after a moment, a smile tugging at your lips.
He laughed, rolling off you just enough to pull you into his side, his arm wrapping around your waist. "Better?"
"Better."
He pressed a kiss to the top of your head, and you felt the tension in his body slowly ease.ย
Eventually, the fans and press got used to seeing the two of you together.
It took time: months of grainy photos and speculative articles, of whispers and pointed fingers and strangers dissecting your every move. But slowly, inevitably, the novelty began to fade. You weren't a mystery anymore, you were just Martin Edwards' girlfriend, and he was just your boyfriend, and the two of you were simply... together.
The tabloids still covered you, of course, they always would, but the tone shifted. The invasive headlines gave way to something almost affectionate. The speculation about breakups and cheating scandals was replaced by stories about your red carpet appearances, your joint holidays, the way Martin looked at you during interviews.
"CORTIS Frontman and Model Girlfriend: The Coolest Couple in Rock?" โNME
"Martin Edwards and Y/N Y/L/N: How They Became Music's Most Stylish Pair" โVogue
"Rockstar Romance: Why Martin and Y/N Are Relationship Goals" โRolling Stone
You'd laugh every time you saw a new headline, shoving the magazine in Martin's face. "Did you see this? We're 'relationship goals.'"
He'd grin, pulling you into his lap. "They're not wrong."
You'd roll your eyes, but you'd be smiling. "You have such a big ego."
"You love it."
And you did. You really did.
The fans embraced you too. At first, there had been the inevitable backlash: jealous comments, cruel speculation, girls who swore you weren't good enough for him. But you weathered it, never engaging, never stooping to their level. You showed up to shows, stood quietly by his side, and let your actions speak for themselves.
Slowly, the fans came around. They saw the way Martin looked at you like you'd hung the moon, and how you supported him by showing up even when you didn't have to. They saw the small moments: him holding your hand backstage, you fixing his collar before he went on stage, the private smiles you exchanged across crowded rooms.
Soon, you weren't just Martin Edwards' girlfriend. You were the girl who'd tamed the rockstar. The one who could walk a runway in couture and still stand in the pit at one of his shows despite the rowdy crowd. The one who never looked fazed, never seemed rattled, never let the cameras get to her.
You'd become a style icon in your own right, your red carpet looks dissected and praised. You'd become a fixture at award shows, a staple of magazine covers, a name that stood on its own. And through it all, Martin was right beside you, his hand always finding yours, his eyes always seeking you out in a crowd.
The press called you the coolest couple, the most stylish pair, the relationship goals of a generation, but to you, it was simpler than that. You were just two people who'd found each other in the chaos, and had held on dearly when everything tried to pull you apart.
