Even towards the end of winter the pink fruit, which split to reveal red seeds, of Euonymus hamiltonianus 'Winter Glory' (spindle) provide a display. This deciduous shrub has a rounded habit with oval green leaves turning orangey pink in autumn.

Growing by the lake and flanked by festive decorations were a group of Abies koreana (Korean fir). This compact evergreen conical tree species requires a deep, neutral to slightly acidic, moist but well-drained soil, in full sun, with some shelter from cold winds. Even when young the trees can produce cylindrical blue or purple cones.

Even in winter the foliage of Hoheria sexstylosa (ribbonwood, lacebark) provides interest. This upright, compact evergreen shrub is native to New Zealand. In summer there are fragrant, five-petalled white flowers borne in dense clusters.

In the arboretum at Marks Hall, Essex, UK, the deciduous shrub Hydrangea paniculata 'Interhydia' (panicled hydrangea, Pink Diamond) provides a display in groups beneath and between the trees. The conical panicles of creamy sterile and fertile flowers age to become a deep pink by autumn and then remain through the winter as these dried flower heads.

Through history plants have been arranged in borders in a range of ways - drifts, tapestries and here at Marks Hall very effectively in rows. The tallest is Verbena bonariensis, the variegated spiky foliage is Iris pallida ‘Argentea Variegata’ and the purple vertical flowers are Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland’ (Balkan clary) arranged by the talented designer Brita von Schoenaich.
