NEW MAP: Europe 170: First Marcomannic War (27 Aug 170) https://buff.ly/2S5GBj3 While Rome was preoccupied with Parthia and the Antonine plague, the Germanic and Danubian tribes apparently formed a secret alliance under the leadership of the Marcomanni. In the winter of 166ā167 the Langobards raided across the Danube, after which the Iazyges attacked Dacia and the Marcomanni invaded as far as Aquileia in northern Italy. Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus scrambled to deal with these new threats, but had only succeeded in securing Italy by the time Verus died of the plague in 169. Seizing their opportunity, the Roxolani and Costoboci joined the war in 170, with the latter advancing to Greece and sacking the sacred town of Eleusis. #ancienthistory #ancientrome #marcomanni #costoboci #sarmatians #cartografia #cartographer #cartography #sarmatia #dacia #eleusis #europe #europeanhistory #germania #historical #historylesson #historymatters #instahistory #italy #lombards #macedonia #maps #pannonia #parthia #quadi #roman #romanempire #romanhistory #romans #newmap (at Eleusis, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_W2g5AAwSc/?igshid=xd9cjbeop166
Marcomanni
The Marcomanni were a Germanic tribe with possible Celtic influences or origin. Their exact original location is unknown but they eventually settled north of the Danube river near modern day Bohemia. Because they have Celtic influences, their original location might have been in South Germany. Their name is derived from the Proto-Germanic words Marko and Manniz which translates into men of the border.
The Marcomanni were part of the Suevi/Suebi confederation. They are best known for their destruction of Boii lands. The Boii were a Celtic tribe. What exactly happened there is not clear. It could have been a Germanic takeover of a Celtic population.
In 58BC, warriors of the Suebi tribes, which included the Marcomanni, crossed the river Rhine under the command of Ariovistus. Ariovistus wanted to assist the Averni and Sequani tribes in their struggles against the Aedui. These tribes were all Celtic but the army was made up of Germanic warriors from the multiple tribes that represent the Suebi.
Unfortunately for the Germanic warriors, Julius Caesar was in the same area and they clashed in what is now called the battle of Vosges. The Audui were defeated but the Romans Ā managed to beat the Suebi army. Before the battle commenced, panic broke out amongst the Roman soldiers. They all greatly feared the fierce Germanic warriors. Julius Caesar berated the centurions in his army for allowing this fear to spread.
The Marcomanni clashed again with the Romans around 5AD. This time the Langobards attacked a Roman army, which was under command by emperor Tiberius. Tiberius wanted to extend Roman power beyond the river Rhine. The Langobards were led by the Marcomanni but the legions of Tiberius proved to be too strong for the Langobards. Things however went differently for the Marcomanni.
During the same year, an insurrection broke out in Illyricum. The Roman army was needed to stop this uprising. A hasty peace was made with Maroboduus, leader of the Marcomanni, and thus bloodshed was prevented.
Around 19AD, Arminius, hero of the Teutoburgerwald, attacked Maroboduus. I have spoken about this before in my article about the Cherusci. The outcome of this indecisive battle, caused Maroboduus to withdraw into territory that later became Bohemia.
In 166AD, The Marcomanni again entered into conflict against the Roman empire. This time, a new confederation of Germanic tribes was formed to battle the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. The Germanics managed to penetrate as far as the borders of modern day Italy. Marcus spent the rest of his life trying to contain this problem. The war ended after the death of Marcus Aurelius in 180AD.
You might have seen a battle of this long lasting war. The battle in the first scene of the film Gladiator takes place during this conflict.
Eventually the Marcomanni turned Christian in the mid 4th century AD. They survived the invasion of the Huns and were probably absorbed by the Bavarians, who still live and flourish in South-East Germany.

NEW MAP: Europe 175: Avidius Cassiusā Revolt (03 May 175) https://buff.ly/3bOPwNH Marcus Aurelius defeated the Marcomanni and their allies in a series of campaigns from 171ā5. Just as he was crushing the last of his enemies, rumors of Marcusā deathāallegedly fuelled by his wife Faustinaāencouraged Avidius Cassius, governor of Syria, to proclaim himself emperor. However, as it became clear that Marcus was alive and marching south, the revolt collapsed and Cassius was murdered by his own men. #ancient #ancientrome #cartography #marcomanni #aegyptus #romanegypt #egypt #europe #europeanhistory #historical #histories #historygeek #historygram #historylesson #historymaker #historynerd #maps #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #romanhistory #romans #spqr #caesar #romanemperor #egyptianhistory #marcusaurelius #newmap (at Alexandria, Egypt) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_o1rVlAkjl/?igshid=1v4lgba0i2ny0
NEW MAP: Europe 96: Accession of Nerva (18 Sep 96 AD) https://buff.ly/2Ea9Da1 During his 15-year reign, Domitian managed to incite most of Romeās Germanic and Danubian neighbors to war without securing a significant victory. At the same time, his authoritarian manner alienated the Senate. In 96 AD he was assassinated in a palace conspiracy and the Senate proclaimed the 66-year-old Nerva as his successor. As the first of what posterity would call the āFive Good Emperorsā, Nerva would usher in almost a century of Roman prosperity and stability under the NervaāAntonine dynasty. #ancient #ancienthistory #ancientrome #barbarians #barbarian #marcomanni #diplomacy #europe #europeanhistory #germania #historicalplace #history #historyclass #historymatters #historyteacher #iazyges #mapmaking #mapping #maps #roman #romancivilwar #romancivilwars #romanempire #romanhistory #dacia #romans #strategy #nerva #romanempeor #newmap (at Rome, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6AV0jeAGc6/?igshid=11y8bf76y5u9p

NEW MAP: Europe 26: Roman Clients in Germania (30 Jun 26 AD) https://buff.ly/2YP4ufZ In 21 AD Arminius was assassinated in a pro-Roman plot, leading to the collapse of his alliance and the reduction of his tribeāthe Cherusciāto a Roman client state. At around the same time, the Romans backed the creation of a number of client kingdoms among the tribes of the upper Danube, spreading their system of indirect rule across much of Magna Germania. It would be some 140 years before the Germans would again pose a serious threat to the Empire. #europe #history #welovehistory #map #ancienthistory #classicalera #cherusci #germania #marcomanni #europeanhistory #hermunduri #parthia #june #june30 #pannonia #quadi #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Carnuntum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzygAJCnU4H/?igshid=14bnmbkh6aggc
NEW MAP: Europe 18: Arminiusā War with Maroboduus (01 Oct 18 AD) https://buff.ly/2YAYk3g Tiberius considered Germanicusā victories over Arminius (14ā16 AD) sufficient revenge for the Roman defeat in the Teutoburg Forest, recalling the general to a triumph in Rome. However, Arminius remained at large and, with the Roman pressure gone, he turned to obtaining dominance amongst the Germans. In 17 he attacked his main rival, Maroboduus of the Marcomanni. Soon deserted by his allies, Maroboduus was overthrown by his countrymen and fled to Italy in 19. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #ancienthistory #classicalera #marcomanni #europeanhistory #germania #october #october1 #romanempire #romans #roman #ancientrome #romanhistory #maps #newmap #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics #arminius #germanic #teutoburgerwald #tiberius (at Black Forest, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzgk-08AkBu/?igshid=3bftzbv8ev3u
