Before there was France, there was Clovis I. Rising to power in the late 5th century, Clovis united the once-divided Frankish tribes under a single ruler, creating the foundation of what would become one of medieval Europe's most powerful kingdoms. His victories over rival Frankish kings and neighboring peoples transformed the political map of Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Clovis is also remembered for founding the Merovingian dynasty, which ruled the Franks for nearly 250 years. Perhaps his most significant decision came with his conversion to Nicene Christianity around 496 AD. Unlike many Germanic rulers who followed Arian Christianity, Clovis embraced the faith of the Gallo-Roman majority, earning the support of the Catholic Church and strengthening his authority. This alliance between the Frankish crown and the Church would shape European politics for centuries.

On July 28, 754, Pope Stephen II solemnly re-anointed Pepin the Short as King of the Franks at the Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris. The ceremony also anointed Pepin's sons, Charles (the future Charlemagne) and Carloman, strengthening the legitimacy of the new Carolingian dynasty. In return, Pepin pledged to protect the papacy from its enemies, especially the Lombards in Italy.

Before becoming the first king to unite much of what is now France under Frankish rule, Clovis I led campaigns that included the plundering of churches. One of the most famous stories from his reign, recorded by the 6th-century historian Gregory of Tours, concerns the Vase of Soissons. After the capture of Soissons, a bishop asked for the return of a valuable church vase. Clovis requested that the vase be given to him so he could restore it, but one of his warriors struck it with an axe, insisting that the spoils be divided fairly according to custom.
