Here, have some map generators!
Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator
So. About that map.
I found a thing. An amazing thing. You know all those things to help you create a map of a world? Like spread the macaroni around, or roll this crazy number of dice? Yeah. So i found a thing.
It’s called mapgen4. https://www.redblobgames.com/maps/mapgen4/ Â
Basically, it generates maps, but in a really cool way. You pick a seed, and then it creates a random map. Then you use the little tools to adjust the landmass, and elevation, and water distribution, snow, and other such things. You can even change what direction the prevailing winds come from, and thus which sides of the map are drier. It’s really cool, and I highly recommend checking it out if you need a map of some fantasy land.
Do you know of any globe generators that allow you to either a. draw your own flat map and have it make it into a globe or b. draw your countries on the globe and then it can make it a flat map? Also, any software that would let you create a weird-shaped planet, put a sun in motion around it, and track what that does to the day-night cycle?
Brainstormed: Map To Globe  is a free site that can take a flat map and put it on a globe or other projections. Fractal Terrains is purchasable software that allows you to generate and edit maps with a planet’s globe shape in mind. Both of them are very useful with more applications than I can explain here.
As for a weird shaped planet... do you mean like a donut or cube or something? Because then your best bet may be a 3D modeling program like Blender which allows you to create shapes, animate them, and change lighting scenarios. Otherwise you might just look up lighting rigs for different objects on art reference websites, like SketchFab which is a database for lots of free 3D models. I don’t know if anything specific for planet day cycle scenarios.
Bina:Â Blender is indeed a powerful option if you want to have tighter control over how your image is mapped to a sphere, or if you want to see things animated. I've used it before to map a rectangular image I had drawn onto a sphere and make the sphere spin to make a simple globe gif of my world. Adding a sun and making it go in a circle around your planet is also extremely doable.
But I warn you, if you're not familiar with the software to begin with, it's quite the learning curve.
Here's a good video tutorial on how to map an image onto a sphere to make a globe: YoutubeÂ
Making a moon-planet-sun orbit animation: Youtube
A short-and-sweet "make your object emit light" tutorial: Deviantart
By combining these three tutorials, you should be able to achieve simulating a sun orbiting a custom planet. You can also replace the spherical planet to be whatever shape you want, and once you render your animation you'll easily see how the shadows fall across the shape.
Hey! I'm looking for a certain website one of these RP-helper blogs made and I can't find it anywhere, omg. Basically it's a website that helps you create land/islands (for world building, ect.) and has textures for where lakes, mountains and other stuff are. It's hard to explain, but I'm just checking. ;_;
Hello!
I vaguely remember seeing something about that on my dash at some point, but I’m not sure I can find it, unfortunately.
But I can point you toward a few links that allow you to design your own fantasy maps:
Fantasy Name Generators - Map Creator
donjon - Fantasy World Generator
RPG Virtual Tabletop - Mapping Software (several different mapping programs are listed here, including freeware)
And here’s a masterpost on mapmaking that I reblogged a long time ago.
I hope this helps!
