i found this thing that generates and lets you edit maps
the thing is that it automatically simulates rainfall, rivers, etc based on parameters you can set so you start by just making some cool shapes but before you know it, whoops! you're now That Worldbuilder thinking about plate tectonics and volcanic ridges and climate and shit
Dinked around with mapgen4 (which is an absolutely fantastic resource) and made a map of Hoarfrost, the island that Taylor is from. Described as 'whale-shaped' by a lot of people, most of the shoreline is craggy and steep with the only real smooth beaches being at the 'head' and 'tail' of the whale. The actual village is on the bluffs at the whale's 'head', while much of the 'back' is dominated by old growth pine and spruce forest interspersed with rocky hills and valleys.
It's considered rough sailing terrain due to the deep oceanic dropoffs around the island interspersed with cold-water reefs and rocky structures, not to mention its famously atrocious weather.
I just want free and awesome and accurate map making/world building software. I want to build an entire solar system and have the laws of physics and nature be applied. I want to have geographers and astronomers and biologists and all the scientists come together so I can have perfect and accurate fantasy maps/worlds. Is that too much to ask?
Anyway please recommend your favorite map making software (preferably free)
So. About that map.
I found a thing. An amazing thing. You know all those things to help you create a map of a world? Like spread the macaroni around, or roll this crazy number of dice? Yeah. So i found a thing.
It’s called mapgen4. https://www.redblobgames.com/maps/mapgen4/
Basically, it generates maps, but in a really cool way. You pick a seed, and then it creates a random map. Then you use the little tools to adjust the landmass, and elevation, and water distribution, snow, and other such things. You can even change what direction the prevailing winds come from, and thus which sides of the map are drier. It’s really cool, and I highly recommend checking it out if you need a map of some fantasy land.
