After a childhood of bullying about my weight and a decade in my career being told I was too “big” to be beautiful, my self esteem was so low it never even occurred to me to wear what I wanted at the pool. (Now, let’s be clear, I’m talking about in Western Culture. In South America I’d been wearing bikinis for years because, in some countries, it didn’t feel like my body was viewed as something to hide. But in my own culture, I never felt safe.) The first time I did wear a bikini to a pool party at my work one of my colleagues said I was “Brave”. Brave?! Umm...no. I’m with @lizzobeeating on this one. It’s not “brave” of me show my body as it really is. It’s RUDE of you to comment. Anyway, these days I still have lots of insecurities about my body. I’m still often the largest woman in any cast I’m a part of (as crazy as that is), I still have to get all my clothes altered because apparently a lot of North American designers are mystified by curves and I still have to fight the demons of the shaming I was faced with in the past. But F#%$ you if you think I’m not wearing whatever the Hell I want on the Beach these days and slowly but surely teaching myself that no one can shame me if I’m not ashamed.
