Oughsggdhd im rewatching Inception and it hit me that while Cobb technically identifies several options for things they can use as the "secure" place where the mark puts the information they're hiding (e.g., bank vault, jail), the only one we ever actually see is a safe. Saito's expansion plans are in a safe in the castle. Maurice's will and Robert's pinwheel are in the safe under Maurice's nightstand. And- in the first event chronologically in the movie's timeline- Mal puts her totem in a safe.
The same safe Cobb broke into.
Every single hiding place of something of personal value in the movie is representative of the hiding place Cobb violated in his wife.
Every single time he steals something from a mark (or, in Robert's case, plants something), it's another reminder of the idea he planted in (and freedom he stole from) Mal.
Each time another reenactment of the moment he regrets most.
