5, 7, 12, and 16 for that salt thing? xD
<3333 Oh man the “set to kill” focus on this selection XD
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
Ironically usually the more popular ones. It’s easier to brush off the hate with a disliked ship or at least label it someone else’s opinion, but blind worship and bullying of the haters for a well-loved ship go a long way to sour me towards it, especially if there’s problems with the canon execution that those fans go out of their way to laud or ignore to the point of, again, attacking anyone who disagrees.
...The bees come to mind as an example.
7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?
Oh, plenty, especially if I started out with a mixed opinion and watched anyone with a negative opinion get shamed for it.
My relationship with RWBY is pretty complicated right now; it’s still where my head’s at creatively but my opinions towards the writing quality seem to have run pretty counter to the popular ones ever since v4. I still love what I think it could’ve been, but I’m not too happy with what it’s become and I know I’m in the minority there. Which doesn’t give it much incentive to change course from the direction it’s taken, unfortunately.
Don’t talk to me about Thor Ragnarok either. And on an even older note we all know how well Stephen Moffat’s writing aged.
12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
...I actually have a real soft spot in my heart for v5, despite its problems. It still did pretty well with emotional consistency, even if that ended up expressed in silly ways. Blake letting Adam go was completely wince-worthy in execution for a number of reasons, but it was symbolic of her letting go of her fear of him and turning the tables in the control of their relationship, he the runner and she the leader. Ilia’s arc had a lot of pacing problems and easy forgiveness going on but she did get the distinction of being the first complex villain to get redemption instead of death. Mercury resorting to an arm grab while Emerald lost all sense of coordination catching Yang was...yeah, but that was the last season to really put a spotlight on Yang making a personal, independent effort at letting go of her anger and impulsiveness, and I loved her personally calling out Raven.
Birdgate has been talked about a lot, as well it should, but that aside I love that they made the conscious effort to put Yang and Weiss together because they hadn’t had the chance for much interaction and their dynamic was fantastic while it lasted. Weiss trying to talk Yang down because she’s put in more time with the manipulative trashbag parent routine? Sympathizing with her anger towards Blake while empathizing with Blake’s likely mindset? Here for it.
Also, Raven in general. Not here to defend her, she doesn’t deserve it, but she’s the kind of horrible that is my jam and I was happy to see her get some focus. Shine on you craven Raven, wherever the hell you ended up for the past 2+ volumes. And while the fight itself got a little bit anime how funny would it have been if Cinder just got ganked by a fellow stone-cold bitch with a decade’s more experience at both the backstabbing and Maiden powers? I could dream for a solid few months.
And you will pry Qrow’s drunken, euphoric “I found hiiiim” from my cold, dead hands
16. If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?
Is it gauche to say the writing staff and empathy of the fanbase
