Today we had another set of MA students talking about their practices.

I've found that most of the MA's work is connected, whether intentional or not. Most of them are doing performance and film, but this could also be in response to current circumstances.

I enjoyed Karen Halewood's art. She explained how she'd started in collage, exploring how much you can say with a little amount. She started using bricks in her work, creating bricks from paper, which pretty much resembled a real brick. Then, she made a 'brick perfume', and eventually, as she's trying to break out of this stage in her practice, taped bricks to her feet like large platform shoes and squashed beetroots.

I liked how she challenged the functionality of objects; bricks as shoes, and paper bricks which strip the traditional use of a brick away.

M&TC: WCW Amor Muñoz

Amor Muñoz flips [her giant white bike-trailer] panels and doors, opens up a shelved work station, and hires members of the crowd at an undeniable hourly rate. By the end of the day, once the commissioned work has been done, she packs it all up and moves onto the next destination.

Part of a long-term project called Maquila Region 4 (MA4), which Muñoz started in 2012. Inspired by the operations of Mexican-American border town factories, known as maquilas, this “performative intervention” gives residents in marginalized areas of Mexican cities the chance to work for $7.50 an hour.
