GROUP TASK #5: THE DIGITAL AGE

April showers bring May flowers! As La Lune prepares to settle into another month of mischief and mayhem, the admins have thrown together a brand new task to hopefully entertain and enlighten all of you! The admin team has noticed since La Lune’s inception how much the vast majority of you enjoy creating modernized versions or answering modernized ask memes for your characters, and decided to use that to incorporate another task into our group. As this is our fifth group task, most of you know by now what to expect from these light-hearted character development-oriented tasks, but read below to get a feel for what we require nevertheless!

For the purpose of La Lune’s fifth group task, we will be focusing specifically on social media. For those of you who have been in the group long enough, you may remember an entertaining social media ask meme fest that was held a few months back. It was an interesting way to get to know how your character specifically would behave or interact with others on various social media platforms, and we hope to utilize that same idea with this month’s task. You will all be assigned to create a minimum of one social media mock page / graphic / account for each character to introduce us to how he / she / they would behave in a digital setting. Any and all questions you may have regarding the assignment will be found below. If you find that your question is not answered here, feel free to seek out the admins and we can help guide you further!

✦ HOW SHOULD WE CREATE A SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM FOR OUR CHARACTERS? ✦

Luckily, several other users all across tumblr and other websites have already had similar thoughts and have created and published various social media templates that may be used by anyone interested! As an example, around tumblr alone, you may find some here, here, here, this tag, so on and so forth. There are several different resources available for those who want something to go off of, should you choose the traditional graphic route! You can also build something from scratch if you like; a graphic or template or design that is entirely your own. Just make sure it embodies some aspect of pre-existing social media and gives us insight into your character.

✦ WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE OR DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE USING ONE? ✦

That’s perfectly fine, then! There are definitely alternative routes you can take. You can create a mock account for your character and link everyone on the blog to it through a post, you can utilize text posts to illustrate how your character(s) would behave on social media. 

✦ CAN WE USE ANY FORM OF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT? ✦

So long as said website does, in fact, resist! Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, 8tracks, so on and so forth! It’s entirely up to you!

† The purpose of this task is to get inside the head of your character and figure out how they would work in today’s digital age. Even if you think your character wouldn’t use any social media at all, the benefits of maintaining a presence on the grid far outweigh the costs. Find a reason for your character to utilize and navigate at least one social media site (whether for work, pleasure, networking, or otherwise) and work within those limitations.  As always, make sure to post your finished products on your respective characters and tag your end products with “lunetask” so that the admins and other members can see what everyone has come up with! And, of  course, remember the most basic rule of La Lune tasks: have fun with it!

THE REAL WORLD: KADEN HARPER

Kaden Harper was born in London, England to a mother who left them in the hospital when they were born. They grew up in a foster home known for raising young girls, and the place was their home until they turned 18. They considered the other girls their family, and generally got along well with all of them. The minute they turned 18 they had nowhere to go, and the foster home legally couldn’t allow them to stay, so they headed to Paris. There, through an unlikely meeting they met someone who worked for a discreet escort service that had an office in Paris that offered women for the girlfriend experience, or for dinners, at a price. And of course, if some of the escorts offered other services on the side at a higher price, who was the agency to stop them? Kaden learned all they could from the other escorts, including tips and tricks on how to cater to any gender, in any way. They became one of the favored escorts for their tall stature and style, providing an image of someone who stood out, but not in an eyesore kind of way.

Kaden didn’t dream of being an escort, no, far from it. They wanted to be an actor, and so with the money they made from the escort service they worked for, they sent themselves to school for acting and makeup. They spent four years on their acting major, and then went back to get their cosmetology and stage makeup degree. With their new found acting skills they could pander to new demographics when it came to escorting, and while they finished their cosmetology degree they earned more and more money, until they could afford to be one of the escorts who lived in the building provided for the escorts, a high class apartment building.

Their apartment is small but big enough for them, warm colors and good furniture. They never got the taste for fancy things, so their home is modest compared to some of the other escorts. They don’t live with anyone except for their two birds, two African Grey parrots named Françios and Manon. Their birds spend every moment they’re home out of the cage, always talking and repeating things Kaden has said, whether it be in English or French.

The Real World [1/?]

Chicago was a desolate place for most. The Bretel family made sure their daughter would not have to experience the tough side of the city, and they worked and worked until they could afford to move into a suburban area on the outskirts of the city before they had a child. Much to their disappointment, the rough areas of the city fit Avery Bretel like a glove. The streets became her home away from home. 

Middle school was when she first got a taste of the streets. She had lived a sheltered life up until she met some friends that didn’t seem to fit in with most of their peers. She was drawn to them like a moth to a flame, and they sparked something in her that had lain dormant since her birth. She started disobeying her parents by visiting parts of the city she wasn’t supposed to and by staying out passed her curfew. By high school, she got herself mixed up in gangs -- by choice. She found the danger riveting and soul bearing. Her life outside of home and school was something out of a gritty YA novel, and she lapped it up. 

Dealing drugs and doing them on the side eventually became more of a hassle than the entertainment it provided, and so she attempted to leave the gang scene just after graduating high school. She wanted to rise above and do something more, something bigger, something more dangerous. It took her three years to do it, but she eventually ripped herself free from the clutches of the gang lifestyle simple to settle back into it a new woman. Her time with them had taught her many things, like how to kill a man without leaving evidence and how to steal without being seen. She also knew how to send a message, and she did so by killing one of the more prominent thugs among the community and writing “I’M FREE,” in his blood. Her announcement brought her attention from every corner of Chicago, and she relished in it. She became a hitman; she killed in the night, drank and fucked in the day. It was a paradise.
