every summer, pinehollow lake opens like a wound dressed up as a postcard. the old houses air themselves out, boats return to their slips, and juniper falls begins filling. filling with familiar names, familiar money, familiar mistakes. all of it oh so familiar. familiar enough, almost, to feel safe. but that’s usually the first mistake. locals watch the season arrive from behind shop counters and bar tops, while families, guests, and renters slip back into the same patterns they swear they’ve outgrown. nothing here happens cleanly. neatly. painlessly. it happens slowly, over dock drinks and dinner parties, over bonfires, bad decisions, and conversations that turn too honest after dark. by the end of the season, everyone leaves with something: a secret, a scar, a story, or some piece of themselves they should have left behind with the warmth of a pinehollow summer. so... what will you carry home ?

This town is... it's hard to describe. Horrible, is the word that first comes to mind, and yet, there is a strange comfort I find in the dense fog and the bleak atmosphere.

Though I know I have friends and family waiting for me back on the mainland, I find each new morning I wake in this old, empty inn, the less I want to leave.

I can feel this town slowly sinking its hooks into me. I must leave before I forget that I have a home elsewhere.

A brief summary of Misery's history:

1684 - A ship and its crew washes up on shore after a storm and Misery is officially established.

1716 - Misery is met with a plague.

1829 - A deadly storm traps some of the town inhabitants in the church.

1996 - A bonfire in the woods spreads until half the town is burning.

2014 - Many young girls are killed at the hands of the serial killer Bloody John.

2021 - A new serial killer terrorises the town in the form of The Phantom.

2024 - The emergence of the beast, a hairy, wolf-like creature who comes out at night to hunt wildlife in the woods or to wreak havoc on the store fronts in town.
