I actually drew this before the last one but then become unsatisfied with it. I don’t plan to post it but since I drew it, might as well just post it.

Top of Paris #2 by NicolasCamisard
Soo after seeing Beauty and the Beast twice, I came up with this little backstory of why Cogswoth’s wife wasn’t cursed with all the other castle inhabitants and why he wasn’t too happy to see her and why she was so clingy during the finale.
Henry Cogworth is a man of action, or so he believes. Born the younger son to a family with some wealth, his parents bought him a commission into the army. Serving with little distinction he was never the less dependable and charismatic though not necessarily a leader by any means. Once his service was complete he returned home seeking a little peace and quiet aiding his elder brother in running their family’s business.
It was while haggling the price over a new pocket watch that Henry first spied the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. After a few inquiries he learned her name was Clothilde, the only child of a prominent fish merchant. For weeks he would travel down to the docks and watch her making her way up and down the pier, the sunlight glinting off the water onto her enchanting form. When his brother found out he teased Henry mercilessly pointing out that such a beautiful girl could be snatched up easily by someone else, especially since the younger Cogsworth had never spoken a word to her. Fearful of such an affair occurring the next time he saw her he marched right up to the young woman and ask permission to court her. Three weeks later they were married.
Not long after their marriage Henry discovered his wife formed opinions quickly, voiced them loudly, and based them on little fact. Along with a fiery temper she also despised anything that did not fit her narrow view of the way the world should conduct its self. Despite his comfortable position keeping his brother’s books Clothilde was determined her husband take over her father’s business. Having no head for sailing or trolling he manages to get her to agree to allowing the captains of each vessel to rent their boats, sell their own catch and pay a percentage to the business. The tentative peace begins to crumble when fish begin to become fewer and fewer and the couple is forced to sell the business.
A seemingly saving grace comes in the form of a job position managing the household of a prince. Sporting letters of recommendation from a superior officer and a nobleman of the Cogsworth family acquaintance, Henry is quickly hired. Upon arriving at the castle it quickly becomes apparent why the last staff member quit. The prince is vain, selfish and impossible to please. Despite this Cogsworth preservers and runs the household much like an army encampment. Though she holds no employment position within the castle Clothilde spends many of her days following her husband whilst he performs his duties, criticizing both him and the other members of the staff. While the staff may generally follow Henry’s instruction many speak to him in a tongue-in-cheek manner which his wife finds insubordinate, especially when it comes from a young footman named Lumière. Henry’s refusal to see the perceived disrespect opens the final rift between the couple and they both agree to live separately, with Clothilde moving to the nearby village of Villeneuve.
