“We have to be quiet.”
Some how she was able to run.
Anna was unable to come up with a coherent thought, yet some how she was able to make herself run.
Maybe it was fear. Maybe it was adrenaline. Maybe it was the shock.
Whatever it was, she was running and following the man who had demanded she do so.
What had happened, she wasn’t sure. One minute, she had been chatting in the elevator with her head of security Mattias as they were heading to the event for the night.
The next, she had been pulled to her feet, being yelled at to run and follow this strange man as Mattias laid on the floor of the elevator.
She had followed, staying close behind as this man shot at whoever it was that was after her.
Suddenly, she slammed into the man as he stopped. She would’ve fallen if not for him grabbing her by the waist and holding her up.
Anna gasped, looking up to the man and for the first time seeing his face.
His eyes.
She knew those eyes…why did she know those eyes.
“You ok?” He whispered.
She nodded, went to speak when a sudden commotion came from the end of the hall.
The man raised a finger to his mouth and then pulled her around the corner.
Heart pounding, she listened as the voices slowly began to grow closer.
“In here.”
Anna turned, seeing that he had managed to unlock what looked to be a utility closet. She moved quickly inside and turned to see him close the door.
She went to speak, to ask how she could possibly know him, but before she could he shook his head, “We have to be quiet.”
She wanted to retort, wanted to ask all the questions she had, but she stopped as she heard the voices again.
He stood in front of her, now facing the door, and she held her breath.
The men grew closer till they were right in front of the door.
Anna was shaking and in her nerves, gripped onto his shirt.
“We have to find her. We can’t come back till the bitch is dead.”
“Yeah yeah I know! She couldn’t have gone far.”
“Alone? No, but we have a new player in the game it seems.”
“Yeah…you gonna tell boss about that?”
“If we find her, it won’t matter.”
“But if we don’t–”
“IF we don’t…I doubt we’ll get the chance.”
“Shit…alright let’s keep moving. They couldn’t have gotten far.”
“There is only so many floors…”
And then they slowly moved down the hallway, voices trailing away as they moved.
Anna let out her breath, still gripping the man’s shirt as she waited for him to move, to speak, to do anything. It was then, as she looked down, she saw the blood on her hands.
Mattias’ blood.
Her breath hitched, pulling her hand away as she just stared. She had forgotten that she had moved to help him, tried her best to do something to help stop the bleeding while she could.
The room started to spin, her eyes filling with tears and then--
“Hey hey hey, stay with me.” He murmured. But she couldn’t focus, she felt her legs give out as she hit the floor. She heard a muttered swear, and felt something move across her hands.
She came to, seeing the man wiping gently to remove the blood from her hands.
“It’s not your fault.” he said, “And Mattias...he’ll be ok. I promise.”
But how could he know that? She wanted to scream. He had been bleeding profusely on the elevator floor, not moving and god he didn’t seem to be breathing either.
...and how did he know Mattias?
Finally, he sighed. He looked up at her.
“We’ll have to be quick. The stairs most definitely will be guarded, will have to do the service entrance if we can. It’s only just down the hallway and we can sneak our way from there.”
Anna nodded, still staring at his face. His blonde hair…those eyes…she definitely knew him.
How the hell did she know him?
“Who–”
“No time.” He said, helping her up and moving towards the door. “Once we get out of here, I’ll answer any questions you have Anna, I promise. But we have to keep moving, got it?”
Again, Anna nodded.
“Good. Follow me and stay close.”
He turned then, moving towards the door.
The only thought Anna had as they started to move once more was how he knew her name…and how when he had said her name, she had immediately realized who he was.
