BECKMANN POACHES VICTORY

David Beckmann won the Formula 3 Sprint Race at the Hungaroring but it was Dennis Hauger, Bent Viscaal and Alex Smolyar who starred during the race.

Beckmann started on pole and got away well, fending off challenges from Hauger all the way around the first lap, as further behind at turn 13 Lukas Dunner and Cameron Das made contact, eliminating Dunner from the race.

Hauger then took the lead with a brilliant move around the outside of turn two, using the karting line to his advantage in the wet conditions. Further behind Viscaal and Igor Fraga made contact, Fraga attempting to dive down the inside of the MP Motorsport car, only to slide wide and then hit his rival as he tried to rejoin the track - somehow it was Viscaal who ended up with the penalty.

The contact eliminated Fraga, as a corner later Jake Hughes was able to drop his car into a spin all by himself.

Lap five saw Max Fewtrell slide off the road and allow yesterday’s winner Theo Pourchaire back into the top ten.

The Safety Car came out on lap eight after Liam Lawson stopped on the exit of turn one, ending his nightmare weekend prematurely.

Racing resumed on lap 10 and Viscaal then went on a charge, passing team mate Richard Verschoor and then both Logan Sargeant and Clement Novalak to go from P6 to P3. Further behind on lap 11 Alex Peroni slid off the road and fell down to P10.

Shortly after Clement Novalak’s Carlin started to lose traction and he started to tumble down the order, being passed by Sargeant, Piastri and Verschoor, as Matteo Nannini spun at turn 12.

Lap 13 saw Viscaal move up to P2 and then take the lead as he continued to surge forward, whilst Frederik Vesti also ended his horrible weekend in retirement after contact with one of the HWA cars.

Viscaal then continued to stretch his legs as he had a five second time penalty and had to create a buffer to the cars behind him. However Beckmann in the Trident then found pace again and started to challenge Hauger for P2. The battle ended in contact between the pair, with both able to continue, Beckmann taking the position, and Hauger being passed by Piastri for P3 later in the lap.

Lap 20 saw the final action of the race, Jack Doohan going wide at turn four with a puncture, and Frederico Malvestiti spinning off into the barrier at the same corner, stopping in the middle of the road, and bringing out the Safety Car.

Viscaal was awarded another five second time penalty for overtaking Sargeant by leaving the track and gaining an advantage, with penalties totalling 10 seconds and being stuck behind the Safety Car he was demoted down the order at the chequered flag, with Beckmann taking victory.

Yesterday’s winner Theo Pourchaire had a quiet but solid drive to P6, whilst his ART team mate Alex Smolyar charged up the field to P7 from a P28 start on the grid, a brilliant performance on his birthday, that must leave him wondering what could’ve been if he hadn’t been taken out at the start yesterday.
