The Battle of Pressburg and the Death of Luitpold
On July 4, 907, things went very badly for the Bavarians at the Battle of Pressburg (near modern-day Bratislava). The army was led by Luitpold, Margrave of Bavaria, a powerful noble who was responsible for defending the eastern frontier of the East Frankish realm.
The Bavarians were facing the Magyars, a fast-moving and highly effective cavalry force that had been raiding into Central Europe for years. In this battle, the Magyars outmaneuvered and overwhelmed the Bavarian army. Luitpold was killed in the fighting, along with many other important nobles and leaders. It was a total collapse of the Bavarian defensive force in the region.
The defeat had serious consequences. With much of Bavaria’s leadership wiped out, the eastern frontier was left wide open. The Magyars took advantage of this weakness, continuing their raids deep into Europe for decades afterward. It wasn’t until the Battle of Lechfeld in 955 that their expansion was finally stopped for good.
