In honor of Luis Salom's 10 year anniversary, I'm sharing a Luis and Maximo thread [look in the reposts]
"My racing heroes are Luis Salom and Marc Marquez."
From what I've found Luis, one of Maximo's idols in racing, recognized Maximo's talent very early in his career and began training with him.
Wait. You're telling me Maximo Quiles running through the gravel and waving on a corner was maybe him possibly waving to a mural of Luis Salom who passed away after an accident in Barcelona in 2016?
From this Tiktok where aspar Team commented and Maximos caption included Luis too
It's so sad Luis Salom is only remembered for how he died "BC riders shouldn't only be remembered for their deaths and he was a good guy and a decent racer?" Yeah sure but mainly it's sad BC he had one of THEE cuntiest helmets in racing history
Time to share a beautiful story.
3-4 years ago, Maverick bought a 125cc Aprilia bike to a team and to Aprilia without telling it to anyone. That bike was Luis Salom's, who was a great friend and a rival.
Out of the blue, and a couple of days ago, Maverick decided that the bike was supposed to be in another place, with Luis's mom. So he send her a message asking for her address and him, with his physical trainer (? Not sure what is the word in English but the person who keeps track of everything and makes sure he is fit and ready) they send the bike. I think it arrived yesterday, but until today it wasn't made public because the family wasn't home to open it.
And to make it even better news broke because Luis' mom wanted to share it with DAZN's team (they are friends, always talking respectfully and promoting the annual bile meeting the family does). Maverick didn't want media or anyone to know it. He said there was a better place for that bike and it wasn't his home. He still misses his cousin and thought about Luis' mom having something that Luis loved, a bike that made him fight for the championship and made him happy. A piece of Luis's life.
When people talks about MotoGP being a family I think about this. I think about a rider wanting to have something from their rival. I think about a rider being friends with the family of another fellow rider or about sitting next to an injured rider to make sure they are okay and scolding them for their action (that was a WSSP Race between Tuuli and Cluzel, but the sentiment is the same nonetheless)
