Kpop Demon Hunter Theory!!!
Okay, so we know that Rumi is a half demon right? According to Celine and Rumi's account, anyway, but! I keep thinking about how the demons seem to be dead people, going off of Jinu's situation, anyway, I mean, he can't be alive for 400 years, right? He must be dead to become a spiritual being. So, based on this logic, Rumi's dad... couldn't have been a demon and Rumi is not actually a half-demon... Dead beings can't reproduce... They're dead, death cannot create life. It can sustain something that is already living, but it cannot aid in its creation.
Then I thought deeper about Jinu and the Saja Boys. The girls didn't immediately clock them as demons. They passed for humans right up until the girls, who are deeply spiritually attuned, noticed the patterns. Patterns that Jinu explicitly tells Rumi are a representation of shame and regret. Something Rumi who clearly suffers from a child's guilt of her mother's death - not that Rumi is at fault at all! - and compounded by her caretaker's insistence to hide 'OUR' Shame. Go to LuckyLeftie on TikTok, I love all of her analysis of... Everything! But she goes into Rumi and Celine's relationship and even about how demons and hunters share the same characteristics but go down different paths based upon their own choices, which I LOVE!!! and supports my theory that Rumi's dad was NOT a demon until AFTER Rumi was born.
Rumi very clearly tells the audience that the hunters don't actually know much about demons. Jinu is the one that informs her that he was human once, but his shame and regret, fuelled by Gwi-ma, is what eventually turned him. The movie doesn't give us an explicit time of when he became a full demon. But, it's insinuated that he noticed marks appearing on him while he was alive, which furthered his guilt and shame and Gwi-ma's control over Jinu - which is why he's surprised that Rumi can't hear Gwi-ma, suggesting this is a universal experience of demons. I imagine that upon Jinu's death, Gwi-ma obtained full control and transformed Jinu into a demon and taking his soul.
WHAT IF! Rumi's dad was an obsessive fan, maybe even a saesang who was in 'love' with Rumi's mom and Gwi-ma, seeing an opportunity to destroy the current hunters, because to me it's very clearly shown that the demons are hyper aware of the hunters, perhaps spying on them regularly, just based on Gwi-ma's conversations. I mean, even at the begining of the film, the girls are on a plane that was hijacked by demons, like that's not an easy thing to do and shows forthought and premeditation on the demons end. Anways - Gwi-ma gets into Rumi's dad's head and convinces him that he can help Rumi's dad acheive the relationship he wants with Rumi's mom. Badabing badaboom, they have a relationship and everything is going smoothly, but Rumi's dad begins to doubt they're relationship because he knows that gwi-ma manipulated the situation, and so he doesn't believe that Rumi's mom actually loves him, and he begins to spiral, maybe becoming abusive, as obsessive stalkers who do obtain the relationship with their victim are wont to do. Obviously, Celine and the hunter who are in a tight sisterhood with Rumi's mom are concerned, maybe even ashamed of failing to protect their sister who is now being abused, isolated, shamed in this relationship and they confront the couple together, Rumi is just a baby at this point, but the hunters are desperate to protect their sister and her daughter. Gwi-ma is gabbing mad in Stalker's ear, convincing him that Rumi's mom is a traitor and liar, and that Celine and the hunters are against their 'love' and he attacks, his emotions loosing control and the marks appearing on his skin, just like what happends with Rumi and Jinu in heated moments. REMEMBER!!! He's still human at this point, but the hunters don't know that humans can have these marks, only demons have these marks. So now, the hunters are taken aback, this man that they've known for years at this point is suddenly a demon, and in the heat of the moment, he lands a fatal blow to Rumi's mom, because if he can't have her, no one can. Celine snaps out of it, lands a killing blow on stalker, fully transforming him into a demon, he's officially killed, but Rumi's mom is dying, and in her final moments she knows 3 things:
Her husband/lover was a demon
He's dead and she's dying
Rumi is all alone and potentially in danger for being a half-demon
She begs Celine to protect her daughter, that she innocent, and Celine agrees in her grief and regret. But, her deep seated shame over failing to protect her sister from a demon bleeds into how she raises and treats Rumi.
I don't know, guys, I feel like I cooked with this one... Thoughts?
