The Legendary Lovers Tree

Traveling through the backwoods last week I came across this old beautiful tree. You could tell by its sheer beauty that it had to be a landmark. 

At its base, there was plaque that read the following:

“Planted in 1705, named in 1813 ‘The Lover’s Tree.’”

The plaque went on to explain that in the case of illicit relationships the two parties would meet under the cover of night at this tree. 

They would meet for a tryst or to make plans to elope and escape the oppressive rules of love.

As I looked up at this tree, it seemed to go on forever.

The lowest boughs spread out so far from the base, it was like an umbrella of giant proportions. 

The trunk was massive and gnarled from years of wear.

You could faintly see some carvings of names and initials decades and possibly centuries old. They mingled with the fresh initials of new lovers to create a beautiful contrast.

For how many was this tree a landmark of love?

A safe place from the rain.

A safe place from the pain.

A strong trunk to hold all the weight.

A strong partner to help bear the weight.

An ever steady tree in an ever changing world.

An ever steady love in an ever changing world.

This beautiful symbol had seen the love of how many lives?

You are my Lover’s Tree.

You stand steady when I don’t know that I can.

You are my Lover’s Tree.

You are my safe place in from the storm.

You are my Lover’s Tree.

And I will forever wait by you.
