I was just curious as to 1. Whether you’ve seen The Book Of Mormon (the musical) and 2. If you have, what are your thoughts about it as an ex-Mormon?

If you don’t feel like sharing that’s ok but I was curious ^^

oh this is actually a rlly fun question because i just listened to it today!! i've listened to it a few times and i watched a recording once ^^

i think a lot of the digs it takes at Mormonism are accurate; it's true that Mormons are super nice and polite to everyone, it's true that they're all secretly gay (not actually but. yeah), little stuff like that

and a lot of things are accurate, like Missionaries not being able to choose where they're going, who their companion is, and living under very strict rules. there are also a few songs I'd like to mention specifically:

Turn it Off

it's true that there's lots of suppressing emotions in Mormonism, but they don't really consider it emotional suppression. of course, adults will tell you that feeling your emotions, even negative ones, is healthy, but when it actually comes down to it, there's a lot more trying to feel better as quickly as possible because negative thoughts are the devil and you just need to pray and read the scriptures and let God in and stop being sad

I Believe

unfortunately, a lot of the wild things that Elder Price says he believes in this song are a part of Mormonism. Even things like "I believe God has a plan for all of us / I believe that plan involves me getting my own planet," "I believe that in 1978 God changed his mind about black people," and "I believe that God lives on a planet called Kolob / I believe that Jesus has his own planet as well / and I believe that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri" . But most importantly, "I am a Mormon, and a Mormon just believes," because so much of Mormonism is believing things simply because you're told to. There are all these insane rules you're supposed to blindly follow just because God said so, and since He knows anything you have to do whatever He says even if there is absolutely no logic behind it.

I also really liked Spooky Mormon Hell Dream, especially how Elder Price had the dream at a young age over something as small as a donut. when you're Mormon, every little mistake is blown way out of proportion and there's so much emphasis on following every rule all the time. turned me into an anxious freak when it comes to the littlest things

also in All American Prophet when they keep talking about how Joseph Smith didn't show anyone shit. no proof ever

overall, I think it's a great musical. and, for the most part, it's goofy and catchy and satire. but, as someone who grew up Mormon and now views the religion with an incredibly critical eye, many of its takes on Mormonism are painfully accurate. (Mormons don't realize they're accurate, though, because Mormons don't know anything, so Mormons are pretty offended by it all.)

on a more personal note, my favorite songs are Hasa Diga Eebowai and the two I mentioned, the former because it's silly and I like saying "fuck you God," the latter two because they're accurate and they validate my dislike of Mormonism. (Turn it Off because it's like , "oh right my trauma is justified," and I Believe because it's like , "oh right Mormonism is fucking stupid")
