Impressive Interiors of the Saint Columba's Long Tower Church in Derry-Londonderry It was quite interesting to admire Saint Columba's Church. I have been wondering why the church was also named Long Tower Church when it didn't even have a tower tall enough to be called "long". I think this was mentioned by the friendly local who pointed me here but I did not pay attention. Saint Columba's Church was build near two old Christian sites, one was Templull Morr, which was Derry's cathedral back then until it was destroyed in an explosion, the second one was an old monastery with a round tower, this was where the church got its name from. It was said that the monastery was near the current Long Tower church, however research seems to indicate that the monastery was closer Saint Augustine's Church further down the wall of Derry.

Scene from Calvary at Saint Columba's Long Tower Church in Derry-Londonderry As I was approaching Saint Columba's Long Tower Church, I can see that the church isn't as massive as the nearby Saint Eugene's Cathedral which is built below. Saint Eugene's Cathedral is a cathedral and therefore has a higher rank than this "mere" church. However, people still come here to hear mass. Probably because it just looks much better. Anyway, I was still outside and I was appreciating the exterior of the church. As expected from structures built here, Saint Columba's Long Tower Church is built from solid rock, with the materials not differing from the materials use to build the other churches here. I guess they try to keep the traditional way of building these structures.

Walking Towards Saint Columba's Long Tower Church in Derry-Londonderry It seems that the closest place I have to a city is the city of Derry which is in the United Kingdom. It is a short drive to the city and I have already been there several times. I could say that I am more or less familiar central area, where the walled city is and I have taken photos of some interesting places there. I remember though, through a conversation with a friendly local that one of the places to visit there is a place which they call Long Tower Church. This is supposedly one of the most impressive churches in Derry. I was meaning to visit this church but as nature was calling me I wasn't able to go. Now, I had another chance to visit this church.
