fic rec! 19K, more emotionally charged meeting of the elder twins.
Summary: A "Not What He Seems" AU, where Stan doesnât escape government custody unscathed, and his reunion with Ford goes a bit differently as a result.
Comment: The hurt! The angst! The worry! The misguided attempts at comfort! Thereâs so much to love here, from Stanâs low self-worth to Ford learning to curb his tongue, and Mabel getting healing advice from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

For the AU where Tomas meets Marcus at St. Aquinas - which sounds so cool, I'm excited - I'm wondering, does he still dream about Marcus before they meet? So that when he knocks on his neighbor's door demanding he turn down the music, or however they meet, his breath catches because lo and behold, it's literally the man of his dreams?
There is a dream, yes! Although, itâs different from the dreams Tomas had in the first episode, a bit more subtle... The way I have it written right now he just hears Marcusâ voice and never sees his face, though I may change that later because I am so ridiculously obsessive and indecisive when it comes to my own writing lmao
Ah, I hope you have a fantastic trip to Italy, I'm sure you'll have a blast! I'm actually planning to study abroad there myself, but next semester đ And if you're still looking for prompts to wile away the long plane ride, maybe an alternative pov of someone Dick works with in the police department reacting (maybe unintentionally eavesdropping on?) to seeing his father, billionaire and apparently very concerned parent Bruce Wayne, when he's seriously injured on the job
Thank you! Iâm having fun so far, for the most part. Todayâs the first day Iâve had that I can finally take a break and breathe, and Iâm finding that Iâm feeling just a tad bit home sick. Still, this whole experience has been amazing.
I hope you have a wonderful trip abroad yourself! Thanks for the prompt!
This wasnât supposed to happen. Heand Grayson had taken all the necessary steps to make sure everyone would comeout of that situation unharmed, and yetâand yet it had been Grayson whoâd taken that bullet. Thatbullet that had been meant for Officer Derek Wilhelmâs heart.
Because if Grayson hadnât pushedhim aside, Derek would have been leaving the hostage-held bank in a body bag. Graysonhad said they were lucky. That just because Grayson was the only one in thehospital things were better.
But it should have been Derek. NotRichard Grayson. Grayson had saved his life, and all Derek could think to do torepay the man was sit in vigil at his bedside, just waiting for Grayson to wakeup from the anesthetic.
Heâd expected it to be a quiettime, spent in silence and self-hatred. What he doesnât expect is for the doorto bang open and a man dressed to the nines to come storming in, an old man ina weird suit and an angry doctor trailing behind him.
âI donât care how rich you are,âthe doctor is saying. âThis is a hospital. We have rules here. And you canâtsee Mr. Grayson until he gives permission for you to visit him. Youâre not onhis contact list.â
âCheck it again,â the man says, barelygiving the doctor more than a glance before heâs striding towards the bed.Towards Grayson. Towards Derek.
Derek stands up, hand creepingtowards his belt. âExcuse me, sir, but the doctor said you donât havepermission to be in here.â
The manâs face doesnât change, butthereâs more than a hint of anger in his voice when he speaks again. âScrewpermission.â He points to the bed. âThatâs my son, and you canât keep me fromseeing him when heâs just been shotââ
âIâm sorry,â the doctor says, a bitquieter and with somewhat more empathy. âBut youâre not exempt from the rulesMr. Wayne. Especially since Officer Grayson was on duty.â
âBruce?â
Derek starts, whirling around tosee Grayson blinking away the last dredges of sleeping. He isnât looking atDerek, though, or the doctor or the old man. No, he only has eyes for who Derekâsput together to be Bruce Wayne. Richard Graysonâs adopted father.
Derek stands down, and Bruce Waynewalks right past him to Graysonâs bedside.
âHowâre you feeling, Dick?â Wayneasks, brushing back Graysonâs hair from his face, the manâs voice gentle andâfatherly.Never, ever, would Derek have thought that Mr. Wayneâbillionaire and the guyDerek sometimes heard Dick tell Rohrbach about occasionally when Grayson wasstressedâsound anything like that.
Dick hums softly, eyes flutteringshut. âI kinda feel floaty.â
âYou just got out of surgery,âWayne says.
The doctor behind Derek sighs andshoots Wayne a pointed look when the man looks up. âIâm still waiting for hispartner to show up, so you have until then, Mr. Wayne. Donât stress out mypatient.â
Wayne nods, and then he looks backdown at Grayson. âStill with me, chum?â
âYou havenât called me that in awhile,â Grayson says, sounding just the slightest bit more coherent when hespeaks this time. âNot since Jason.â
Derekâs heart skips a beat, and hethinks that maybe he really shouldnât be here for this conversation. While ithadnât been quite as big a topic here in BlĂźdhaven as it had been in Gotham, everyone still knew about Jason Todd. The otheradopted son of Bruce Wayne. Derek had heard about his death, and he really hadnâtrealized how much it had probably affected his partner.
Because, yes. He can put two andtwo together, especially since Derek used to live in Gotham. He knows who Richard Grayson really is. He knowsabout Bruce Wayne and Richard Grayson and Jason Todd, even if most of thepolice force seems oblivious about it.
Heâd just never told anyone else.He hadnât thought it was important.
But now he realizes that he reallyhadnât thought through how much Jason Toddâs death had affected Wayne andGrayson, and he feels like this is one topic he shouldnât be listening to, evenif Wayne doesnât seem to care that heâs still in the room.
Still, Derek doesnât leave. Maybeafter some sort of loyalty or duty to his fellow officer, but he just canâtmake himself walk out that door.
The other man in the room stays, too.
Wayne looks impossibly sad, and ithonestly makes Derek feel uncomfortable. Thereâs so much emotion in thatexpression, like nothing Derekâs ever seen. âSorry, Dick. I know youâre stillangry with me.â
And then Graysonâs face crumples, his breath hitching slightly. âIâm not mad at you. Not anymore. I just wish youâdcome and see me every once in a while.â
âYou like your independence,â Waynesays, but it doesnât seem like heâs arguing as much as stating a fact. âYou donâtlike when I come to BlĂźdhaven.â
Grayson closes his eyes. âI didnât,âhe confirms. âI was angry, though. About Jason and my name, and about youtrying to keep me from moving on.â Grayson pauses and thereâs a silence thatovertakes the room before Graysonâs sucking in a sharp breath. âThat doesnâtmean I donât want you here now, though. Youâre my dad, Bruce.â
And Derek thinks that he reallyneeds to get out of here, so he mumbles some excuse and slips out the door, nobodyeven giving him a second look.
Thereâs a part of him that wastouched in there, he thinks, because now all he can think about is his mom andhow she must feel living all alone in that retirement home, and how itâs been weeks since heâd last visited. Is shesad? Lonely? Worried that he hasnât done more than call a few times?
He ends up staring at hiscellphone, not being able to help it when he dials his motherâs number and putsthe phone to his ear.
Richard Grayson is an orphan, thepapers say, but Derek doesnât think that heâd been lacking any parentalsupport. Bruce Wayne doesnât seem as bad a father as the papers make him out tobe, either, looking at Grayson like heâs seeing his whole world in front ofhim, and Derek wonders if his own father used to look at him like that beforehe died.

The WHOLE episode was me screaming: TOMAS, honey, light of my life- yes, Marcus is a mess, but you're an even bigger mess right now and the demon is clearly manipulating you to focus all your concern on Marcus so that it can get you ALONE, and it worked because Tomas is a good, sweet boy with no self-preservation whatsoever
tomas, who knows heâs in big trouble and seeing scary shit, trying to look out for everyone in the wholeass house and make the damn coffee and forcing naps on marcus and trying to be strong and good even though heâs like, one more horrible vision away from a mental breakdownÂ
I think "Casualties" is still my favorite fic - just the memory emotionally guts me, though in the best of ways :') "First Page" is a close second, for all the wonderful Stan & Mabel feels
Ah, Casualties. Back when I thought I couldnât write angst. Such halcyon days.
(But seriously, thank you! As I think Iâve mentioned before, Casualties was the first real piece of creative writing Iâd done in years, and I was terrified to post it. It means a lot to know that itâs still someoneâs favorite!)
