Spent the afternoon working on my dissertation. It’s about medieval riddles, so here’s one from Aldhelm’s Enigmata which I was working on today (transl. by A.M. Juster):
From frozen bowels of dewy Earth I’m bred, From woolen fleece with bristles I’m not made. They pull no yarn, no humming threads cascade, No Chinese silkworms weave their yellow thread, I am not plucked from wheels, no stiff combs beat, And yet I’m labelled “clothing” on the street. Long quivers’ arrows do not stir my dread.

I can’t get over how biased some medieval noblemen were when it came to cheating: they really loved to read about it in romances but for some reason really didn’t like it when it happened to them. Philip of Flanders, for whom Chrétien de Troyes wrote Le Chevalier de la Charrette, clearly did not follow Arthur’s example when dealing with his Lancelot and Guinevere. (In the image is a quote from: Kay, S. 2000. "Courts, clerks and courtly love", 82) Speaking of romances and cheating, The Romance of Reynard the Fox has a wonderful episode where Reynard, having fallen into a tub of yellow paint, becomes completely unrecognisable (a reference to Tristan the Leper?) and disguises himself as a jongleur. He meets the wolf Ysengrim, whose wife was earlier caught cheating with Reynard, and the wolf desires above all to hear “the lay of the lady Iseult” – coincidence? (This branch of the romance is French, so the author could have known about Philip, but I imagine he wasn’t the only one of this kind)
