The Cave of Silence
LU Four Link x Reader
â Synopsis:Based on my series The Three Promises (which I haven't posted yet, so it's fine to read this separately â it doesn't affect anything at all), after saving Four, who fell from a bridge into a fast-moving river, you were separated from the group when the current swept you away. Now, soaked and with night falling, you take shelter in a cave after signs of rain appear. So it's just you and him in the cave, both drenched, cold, and alone.
â Tags:Very mild angst, more for the reader than for the story itself, somewhat paranoid thoughts??, soft, light romance if you close your eyes tightly.
Nothing could go wrong, yet you felt that somehow you only brought bad luck to the team. I mean, you were just an ordinary personâno Triforce, no magic, no impactful backstory, unless running away from home, dressing as a man, and joining the guard counted for something. But the truth was, you had no remarkable achievements. Maybe that was the reason, or perhaps it was because they all remembered him. Whatever it was, you felt compelled to save the boy, which led to the current situation: the two of you, soaked, taking shelter in a cave from the increasingly heavy rain, with a campfire youâd managed to build right there, on edge.
The silence between you was thick, broken only by the constant sound of feet squelching in mud and Fourâs slightly labored breathing.
You bit the inside of your cheek. It was awkwardâa very weird atmosphere, for you. I mean, what could you even say now? Ask Four to take off his clothes and put them near the fire to dry? That, despite being a good idea, could come off as strange, a bit perverted. You werenât that close, after all; youâd been with the group for less time. What could you do? He was there in the corner, shivering from the cold. You had to do somethingâhe could catch a chill. Scanning every corner, you noticed the small cave had nothing but rocks, a few branches, and leaves blown in by the wind. That was it.
You had your small backpackâsince you felt guilty about Epona carrying it, she wasnât even yoursâand opening it, you found some things were wet. Digging through, you saw the emergency blanket you always carried. It was a bit damp but not too bad. Taking it out and hanging it near the fire on an improvised line, you watched the moisture slowly evaporate, maybe because of the fabric. Whatever the reason, you took a deep breath, mustering a tiny bit of courage as you tossed more branches onto the fire.
In a simple, neutral tone, you asked the boy beside you to go behind the blanket, take off his clothes to dry near the fire, and use the blanket to cover himself afterward. In the lingering silence, you added that it was so he wouldnât catch a cold and that you wouldnât lookâthat it was okayâmaking sure it didnât sound like you were some pervert or giving the wrong idea.
The whole time, staring at the fire, you wondered what the groupâs next move would be. The most logical thing would be for the group to go down the river to look for Four, so after the rain, youâd need to go up the river to find them. Easy.
âArenât you going to dry your clothes too?â you heard the boyâs voice, which caught you a bit off guard. Still looking at the fire, not wanting to risk seeing him, you just shook your head. You werenât coldâmaybe because you were thinking too much. Your clothes were also made of different fabric; they dried quickly. And like the fire, your body heat was high from the adrenaline rush of rescuing Four. So, no, you didnât need to. Besides, you were pretty used to these situations in your own world.
Seeming to swallow his response, Four could only nod in agreement even though you werenât looking. He was utterly confused by the whole situation, his four colors in his mind each voicing different opinions and theories about the best way to say things.
Whatever it was, even though it was somewhat embarrassing to be in his underwear with a blanket covering him, you were still in damp clothes. You were still a bit wet, even if less so from staying close to the fire and tending to it.
The rain stopped. The sudden silence that filled the cave entrance was almost louder than the storm itself, broken only by the constant dripping of water from leaves and the stone ceiling. You stayed still for a moment, listening, confirming, before asking if Four was dry and dressed yet.
From under the blanket, there was movementâwhich you didnât look at, keeping your eyes fixed on the embers of the fireâand you carefully went through the ritual: spreading the embers with a stick, covering them with damp soil from the entrance, making sure not even a wisp of smoke escaped.
âIâm dressed now.â The boyâs voice came from behind you, and as you took the blanket back, you stored it inside your backpack, feeling its damp weight against your back.
It wasnât comfortable, but it was normalâa discomfort to be endured. With a nod toward the cave exit, you set off, not looking back to see if he was following. You knew he was. Heading up the riverbank, the silence between you was sharp, but it was fine. You werenât much of a talkerâhe knew that. The intimacy wasnât great, even though Four didnât mention or show that, despite everything youâd been through, heâd developed a bit of a crush on you.
â Author's note:I had the idea to write a more down-to-earth one-shot. I was reading some fics with a cave setting that ended up going down a more smutty path, with nudity at the end, and that wasn't what I wanted to do right now. Since I'm still working on the reader, I preferred something lighter and simpler. I'm not judging this type of ficâI actually like them a lotâI just want to experiment with other ways of writing.

Heart of Heights AU: Theory
Gliderâs note: This lovely Sword Fight on The Heights AU belongs to @ephermalnexus, and none of these characters, nor anything from this AU belongs to me. I am simply making this theory because itâs been stuck in my head for a WHILE now, and also because I think it makes a lot of sense. Go check out Nexusâ stuff, heâs a great artist and writer!!!
This theory is centered around Daemonshank and Linked, but it overall covers a few things that add up together. The main posts Iâm using as evidence are reblogged in my blog :)
Theory: Daemonshank killed Linked, and intends to do so again.
A while back, an anon asked Nexus about what had killed Linked/what caused him to be respawned. Nexusâ answer was a drawing and a quote. The drawing is a few broken chains and a glitching sword, all drawn in a minty green colour. The sword is clearly the Daemonshank sword, but the quote is the hard part to analyze. Iâm assuming that the following quote was said by Daemonshank: âThe worst part is: I believed you. You pulled that veil over my eyes, making me believe that I'm not defined by these cold shackles that burn into my wrists. Your hands guided me to the flowers but frowned when I picked them. Those hands. Where do they lay you now? A mocked grave celebrating you as a martyr, when your hands are just as stained as mine. You'll get back up again- you always do. But I'll be there, and I'll make sure⌠you won't come back."Â
Nexus made another more recent post, one with a drawing of Linked showing Daemonshank around a garden. In the post, Linked is the one doing the speaking: "It's still a bit messy, Venomshank just finished clearing it out. But look how much space there is! Since gardening's been working out so well for you, I'd thought you'd want to use a place like this. Just come down here if you're ever upset and need some space. You can just do whatever until you feel better, alright? Remember: a bad thought for a seed! Think about all the pretty flowers you can plant here, maybe some tulips here, a patch of roses there- oh! Maybe we can move a fountain in here..." Daemonshank is definitely unhappy in the drawing, frowning, seeming to be avoiding eye contact with Linked.
This feels as if it strongly connects to the post about Linkedâs death.
âThe worst part is: I believed you. You pulled that veil over my eyes, making me believe that I'm not defined by these cold shackles that burn into my wrists.â â this part may be implying that Linked somehow lied to, manipulated or deceived Daemonshank. âMaking me believe that Iâm not defined by these cold shackles that burn into my wristsâ is kind of confusing, but I think it means Telamon himself did something to Daemonshank to define them as the shackles.
âYour hands guided me to the flowers but frowned when I picked them. Those hands.â â Iâm not sure what âthose handsâ means, but the rest sort of connects to the garden post. Maybe Daemonshank was frowning because they were getting flashbacks from when Linked had frowned at them picking flowers. What I can guess here though is that Daemon and Linked seemed to have a complicated relationship.
âWhere do they lay you now? A mocked grave celebrating you as a martyr, when your hands are just as stained as mine.â â "Where do they lay you now?â and âA mocked grave celebrating you as a martyrâ is probably referring to the other swords after Linked died, and how Linked may have sacrificed himself or something. But the line âwhen your hands are just as stained as mineâ hints that perhaps both Linked and Daemonshank did some awful things, but the other swords only blamed Daemonshank. The fact the word âmockedâ is used gives me the idea that some swords donât respect Linked, but this is really unlikely, and might be a future theory for a future post. Itâs confusing why the word âmockedâ is used though.
âYou'll get back up again- you always do. But I'll be there, and I'll make sure⌠you won't come back." â Daemonshank is aware that Linked will revive just like any other sword, but that theyâll keep killing him. That is probably from Linked lying to them, and they want to kill Linked over and over as revenge, despite him no longer remembering his actions.
Linked and Venomshankâs ship, as far as I know, is canon, but Linked no longer remembers it due to reviving. Unless Iâm tripping, Nexus said quite a few times that the swords, especially Venomshank, feel guilty of Linkedâs death. I think this ties back to the idea of the swords only blaming Daemonshank for their bad actions, and not Linked for his own bad doings. Perhaps the others feel guilty about that, and feel responsible for everything.
Nexus also stated that both Venomshank and Daemonshank like plants, and that Venomshank has a strong connection to the fauna and stuff. Itâs very possible for Venomshank and Daemonshank to have bonded over their shared love for nature, and if Daemonshank killed Linked, maybe that is why Venomshank seems especially guilty of everything. This might also answer why Venomshank keeps her distance from Linked, because if she really had a connection with Daemonshank and is somehow aware that theyâll kill Linked again, she may be avoiding the pain of creating another bond with him just to lose it again.
Now, letâs assume Venomshank does know about Daemonshankâs plans and actions. That means she could have stopped Daemonshank and also exposed them to the other swords. But she didnât, which may be another reason why she is so guilty.
We might also get more info about Linkedâs death from other characters.
Darkheart has been alive for the longest of all swords, and Iâm talking THIS GUY HAS NOT DIED A SINGLE TIME EVER SINCE TELAMON CREATED THE SWORDS. Perhaps they have some info/memories of what Linkedâs and Daemoshankâs relationship was from the very start and how it changed through the years. Darkheart is said to know what was in Icedaggerâs diary, which I am DYING to get some info from. Nexus also answered with a drawing that Icedagger is the sword whose the least likely to die/has died the least excluding Darkheart. She may also remember some things about Linked and Daemonshank, and maybe some of that stuff is in her diary. I donât think weâll get info about Linked and Daemon from mortal characters, but, hey, theyâre there, so there is a chance it might happen. Firebrand seems to be a mentor to Linked, so we might also get info from him.
âYou pulled that veil over my eyes, making me believe that I'm not defined by these cold shackles that burn into my wrists.â â Iâm just coming back to this part because a pretty crazy theory just came into mind. What if the âshacklesâ have something to do with Icedagger? Nexus said that she was responsible for keeping prisoners locked up in her prison of thick ice. Maybe she imprisoned (or perhaps tried to) Daemonshank? I also think that maybe the swords thought of Daemonshank as the bad things they did, not for who they really were, leading to the guilt.
The lack of times Daemonshank is mentioned by Nexus is maybe telling us that Daemon wants to keep their distance from the other swords. The second time Daemonshank is mentioned (Iâm not sure if it IS the second time but weâll roll with it), it is from someone just asking if Daemonshank will be mentioned soon and stuff. Nexusâ response was a drawing and the following quote: "Careful who you say that name around." I have no idea which character quoted it, but Iâm quite confident that we can exclude Icedagger and Ghostwalker, since I don't think either of them would word it like that, since they both have big vocabularies. Nexus would have done his little thing that shows that itâs Windforce signing in sign language if it were him speaking, so itâs not him. Iâm sure it's not Linked, âcause he doesn't remember a thing, and I doubt Illumina would have said that in such an impolite tone (I think it was sort of impolite or warning or passive-aggressive idk). So that leaves us with Firebrand, Venomshank and Darkheart. I donât see why, nor feel like Darkheart or Venomshank would be talking about Daemonshank like that, but maybe they would, so it's still on the table. The tone in general reminds me of Firebrand, so I think it was him speaking.
But, overall, I am CONFIDENT, 100% SURE DAEMONSHANK KILLED LINKED.
I think I exaggerated really badly with the theories, but it makes a lot of sense (at least to myself). I hope you guys enjoyed my theories and have a great day :)
