1. Character everyone gets wrong
SOKKA. oh my god people get him so wrong. is he good comic relief? yes, he sure is. but he is SO MUCH more than that and i swear he gets dumbed down to this class clown character in so much fandom stuff. be that fics or just straight up interpretation
sokka is funny, sure. moreso because of his sarcasm than his actual joke telling ability. but he is also a character with amazing growth throughout the show. he is incredibly intelligent and an amazing strategist. he also struggles with the loss of his mother and a somewhat strained relationship with his father
he is wayyyyy way more than just “the meat and sarcasm guy” and all the traits that make him interesting get utterly erased in so much fandom material

for those who’ve followed me for a bit, y’all know that i am a massive mako defender
am i saying he did nothing wrong? not in the slightest. he definitely made some mistakes. but i swear this fandom treats his mistakes, which were largely interpersonal relationship mistakes, as the equivalent of the actual villains. it’s very frustrating
when you look past all the love triangle stuff, mako is actually a really cool and interesting character with a lot of depth, and i feel this depth is very ignored. sure some of it is from a lack of screen time in the actual source material, but these are all very surface level observations that are easy to see and appreciate
mako spent most of his life trying to keep his little brother alive in pretty terrible conditions. their parents were dead, they had no other family nearby, they had to join a gang to survive. everything mako does is to protect the ones he loves, and as the show progresses this goes from being only bolin to including people like korra and asami as well
i also feel mako’s major sacrifice in the finale is pretty overlooked. i see lots of people saying he should have died??? as a way to “redeem” himself?? yeah, people deserve to die in the equivalent of a nuclear explosion for… making bad decisions in their relationships…?
idk i’m just a massive mako defender. he really is such a tragic character but all that gets swept away because of the love triangle nonsense that lasted for two seasons :/
