This is so basic but Iām sharing anyway because it took me way too long to do it. Youāve gotta keep track of shit like immunizations like this, esp if you have kids. Make a spreadsheet (this is in Notion, which is nice bc itās really easy to filter by patient, vaccine type, etc, and set reminders). You can put in future doses (oldest kid will need the second meningitis jab in 2026). Make a line for brand, reaction, where you got it, etc. Kid got the updated COVID vaccine yesterday and is feeling shitty todayāI was able to instantaneously see that he had a very similar reaction in 2023. I put in all my and my partnerās childhood vaccines from the records we had, so this goes back to the early 80s! When someone asks if a kid had a shot, I can answer very quickly and easily.
Itās really the little things like this, yāall, especially if your brain doesnāt do a good job of keeping track of these things without some scaffolding.

Class starts up again for me last week, after a much-needed spring break last week!Ā
I donāt think this will impact my activity - and tbh sometimes my activity goes up when Iām in class, because I tend to do better when I have a little structure - but if replies are a little slower than usual, especially on dash, thatās why.Ā

Iām trying to do a bit of life admin around my grocery shopping and plan out seasonal menus. Like whatever produce is in season that month, Iāll already have a handful of recipes to rotate between and already have the bulk of my list written out. Doing it this way helps me cut down on decision fatigue, keeps costs lower (buying in season is always cheaper than out), lead to a more balanced overall diet while still letting me flex my creativity in the kitchen

12.8.19 // afternoon
Watching life admin day-type YouTube videos to make up for acting like an undergrad last night. A postdoc friend of ours got a job at his dream school and organized a bar crawl last night. It was the most fun I've had out in a long time, and we stayed out until the bars closed. As a result, I probably fell asleep around 4, and I didn't get up until noon.
I made a conscious decision to not beat myself up for that before we really started last night though. I know that, even when I go to bed early, getting up at 6am to start doing work and effectively planning, etc doesn't happen, so I should not place that expectation on myself to do it today. It just isn't reasonable to do so, and being anxious about it wasn't going to help either.
I'm getting more into low-impact lifestyle videos and productivity videos, but I know I need to be careful or else I'll fall into a trap of placing too many expectations on myself. I'm finding I like lavendaire a lot.
Today is about getting my space in order, calmly approaching the fellowship application that's due Tuesday, and taking care of myself.

Being an adult...
Is doing nothing but life admin all evening, and still having so much more life admin to do, that youāll have to spend half your Friday off sorting it out. Because you have to call several people, no doubt spend ages on the line, and you wonāt have the time to do that whilst youāre oncall this week. I spent my spare time from my late start today on trying to book an appointment for a patient who went home over the weekend, and that took a truly breathtaking amount of time to book because nobody (the switchboard, the clinic, and patient) seems to like picking up the phone. It really shouldnāt take hours to book someone into one simple clinic. Still, at least itās done. What makes my life admin marathon even better is the fact some of these calls have conditions attached, like āplease call us ASAP but only call between 1.30 and 3pmā, as if everyone is sitting around waiting to call them within their tiny window of opportunity. Rather than the reality that they are dealing with people with actual busy jobs without predictable breaks, and in which I canāt just run off to deal with life admin because I have to stop my patients from potentially dying. I donāt expect secretaries or rota coordinators or whatever to be working in the middle of the night, but I just wish these things could be more flexible. Still, itāll get done, eventually.
