the fork is halfway to his mouth when it stops short , the food he’d collected upon dropping back to his plate. there is a beat —a very long beat— of silence as he’s reminded that saying things like this is no longer a joke. in fact , to an extent , saying things like this is necessary. 

but here they are , trapped in their own home , wondering when the day will come that it’s all over. the two had been so eager to help , to fight , and what had it gotten them ? a cage. a cage for them and a cage for their son. 

but at least they were together. had that not been the dream james had had since they were kids ? had it not all come true ?

setting his fork down , he looks over at her , harry babbling between them in his basinet as he guzzles down a fresh bottle of milk. he looks at her , and love and determination collide. because losing her has never been an option. if it ever had been , they wouldn’t be here now. he’d said it in his vows , and he would say it a thousand times over. they would either grow old or die young , but either way , they would do it together.
