This obviously was designed by an architect who has spent little time in libraries. Lack of accessibility is a major problem. If you canโt walk or climb stairs, the fiction section, which is tiered on three separate levels, is out of bounds for you.
By all accounts, Hunters Point Library has been an unmitigated success of architectural design on a municipal level. Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times called it โamong the finest and most uplifting public buildings New York has produced so far this century.โ The headline last week to Justin Davidsonโs gushing review in New York Magazine unapologetically read, โThe Hunters Point Library Was Too Expensive, and Is Worth It.โ
But following the library's official opening last week, which drew more than 1,300 visitors, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, some members of the public have raised pragmatic issues with its fetching and costly design, namely that of accessibility.
Can a library be relevant in the digital age? Designed by @MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI), the Tianjin Binhai Library features a luminous spherical auditorium and floor-to-ceiling cascading bookcases functions not only as an education centre but as a social space and connector from the park into the cultural district.
