Buckingham’s Fleet Arrives at La Rochelle
On July 10, 1627, an English fleet commanded by George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham arrived at La Rochelle, France, seeking to support the city’s Huguenot rebels in their struggle against the forces of King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu. The expedition was part of the wider religious and political conflicts of the early 17th century, as Protestant powers challenged the growing authority of Catholic monarchies.
Buckingham’s intervention led to the unsuccessful Anglo-French War of 1627–1629 and the eventual Siege of La Rochelle, where royal forces under Cardinal Richelieu moved to crush the Huguenot resistance. The conflict ended with the fall of La Rochelle in 1628, strengthening the power of the French crown and marking a major turning point in France’s religious struggles.

La Rochelle, a Protestant Stronghold of the French Reformation
La Rochelle emerged early in the French Reformation as a Protestant political and military center. The city's fortifications withstood repeated sieges over the years. In 1627, La Rochelle was besieged by Cardinal Richelieu (l. 1585-1642). The city's capitulation in 1628 ended the influence of the Huguenot political party and the religious ambitions of the city.
