Workforce Development Blog - "What does local government need to do to retain critical staff?"
The pre-challenge task for LGMA's 2011 Management Challenge asked teams to consider the challenge and potential actions plans for local councils to retain critical staff.
Rebecca Aston (Organisation Development Coordinator) and Holly Casey (Personal Assistant Corporate) from East Gippsland Shire Council will be one of four teams presenting their team's findings to the 2011 National Congress at the Cairns Convention Centre.
In the lead up to their Congress presentation, Rebecca and Holly provided some of their insights into this issue:
We are riding the momentum of an accelerated environment of change - a
number of trends have emerged that impact the way that we, local
government, address pressing workforce threats and opportunities. In
the midst of all of this, improving service delivery continues to be a
key requirement and we all know that key to this is the need for a
workforce that maximises people's capabilities, lifts productivity and
increases workforce participation. It's all quite straightforward
really...isn't it?
For a large rural Council such as East Gippsland we are finding we need
to take a different route. We have found we need to deviate from these
trends and develop innovative solutions to address how we attract and
retain good staff.Â
During our presentation we tell you a bit about us, we will share two
challenges that we need to acknowledge and address in the battle to
attract and retain good staff in East Gippsland.  In discussing these
challenges, we will be sharing some of our initiatives that relate to
talent retention.
