The door slammed shut behind Hange as she stormed into her office. Levi was already there, standing silently in the corner, waiting for her.
"Did they give you shit?" Levi asked as soon as she entered the room.
She just walked past him without even acknowledging his presence.
"Judging by that door, Iâm guessing it went well."
"The peace talks were not going well." her voice sharp with contempt.
These peace talks are taking forever and it's starting to feel pointless. Hange was getting frustrated of their situation. All those sleepless nights preparing reports and the efforts poured by Levi and the 104th, it felt wasted. The guilt of not being able to make any progress with the other nations is taking a toll on her.
Overwhelmed by her disappointment with herself, her temper got the best of her. She threw the documents she was holding onto the table in front of her, causing the papers to scatter in different directions even causing the tea that Levi prepared for her to spill across her other journals - the ones filled with her titan theories and Moblit's illustrations of Eren's titan form. It had been four years since she last touched those.
Remembering Moblit added to the nausea she was feeling. Hange leaned on her table for support, hands pressed to the wood as she tried to steady herself.
Levi stepped closer to her. Close enough to remind her that if she ever needed support, heâd be right there.
She focused on slowing her breathing, trying to gather herself, when she realized he was standing beside her. Levi didnât say anything. He just stood beside her, quietly observing her, searching for something to say that could ease her anger.
All she wanted to do was tell him how she really felt, to vent to him just like she used to before. She wanted to tell him that she felt helpless and worthless at the same time, but all the pent-up emotions inside her were draining her energy. She just wanted to rest. To be alone.
But she was hesitant to tell Levi that. She didnât want him to feel like she was shutting him out, not after the effort he made waiting for her and preparing tea for her.
A soft, distant smile tugged at her lips.
âIf Erwin were alive, he wouldâve known what to do. I am not made for this diplomatic nuisances.â she said, her voice edged with contempt.
Levi saw it in her eyes when she spoke, the weight of exhaustion and sadness. She tries to hide it from everyone else, but Hange canât hide anything from Levi. He knows her well enough to see right through her facade.
She didnât realize it, but he noticed how her gaze flicked to her old journalsâthe ones she used to write in when she was still just âHangeâ and not the Commander of the Survey Corps. Back when things were simpler. Back when she was still laughing.
It had been a long time since heâd seen her eyes light up like they used to. Ever since Erwin died and she took on the burden of leadership, Hange had stopped smiling the way she did before. Laughter became rare, and when it came, it was faintâhalf-hearted at best. Levi missed their banters, missed the way she used to challenge him with every word, but Hange couldnât be bothered by that anymore. Not now. There was no time for childish games.
Seeing Hange carry the burden of duty alone, Levi canât help but feel guilty, he was the one who put her in this position and yet no matter what he did, he couldnât lighten the weight she was carrying, it just kept getting heavier with each passing day and all he could do was watch as she quietly crumbled under it.
Does she blame me, does she hold any resentment for choosing Armin over Erwin?, Hange never said a word, never looked at him with anything less than understanding, but still, he was starting to blame himself, it was beginning to gnaw at him, and he needed to know, needed to hear what Hange truly feels.
âHange... do you blame me?â he muttered, not meeting her eyes, jaw clenched.
Hange looked at Levi, confused why heâs asking her that question.
âWhat do you mean? What would I even blame you for?â
âDo you blame me... for not choosing Erwin?â
After Erwinâs death four years ago, Levi and Hange rarely spoke about what happened at Shiganshina. Without needing to say it aloud, they both understoodâit was something they had chosen to bury behind them. An unspoken sin they both shared.
No regrets. It meant not looking back, right? They both knew that. So when Levi asked if she blamed him for Erwinâs death, Hange faltered. That was the last thing she ever thought heâd say out loud.
âWhy would I blame you? Erwin trusted you. And I trust you. Thatâs never changed⊠Not even once.â
"We never really talked about what happened at Shiganshina... Tell me, Hange. Is there any part of you that resents me for it? I need to know." Leviâs fist clenched, nails digging into his palm, bracing himself for the truth heâd avoided for years.
He can bear it if other people resent him for it, but if Hange resents him... he wonât be able to live with the guilt.
Hangeâs eyes softened. She asked herself, is that how Iâve made him feel all this time? Like Iâve been holding it over him? How many times have I made him think I blamed him?
She took a breath.
âI told you back at ShiganshinaâIâd rather you had chosen Erwin... but I also said I respected your decision. That there was nothing more to say. Four years have passed but nothing changed. It never crossed my mind to question you.â
Levi stepped closer to Hange. She stepped back before she even realized it. His eyes locked onto hersâsharp, unflinching, unreadable. And for a moment, it felt like he could see right through her.
âJust be honest with me. If you blame me, then say it! If you hate me, fineâgo ahead and curse me for it. But donât shut me out. Watching you like this, not knowing what the hellâs going on in your head...itâs getting under my skin.â
No regrets. Hange screamed in her head. When everything felt overwhelming, theyâd say it like a reflexâno regrets. Move forward. Thatâs what Erwin used to say. A mantra he passed on to Hange and Levi. It became almost a prayer, something to help them cope with the pain of losing the people they cared about. It was also the same mantra they kept repeating after Erwin died.
But after everything that had happened, after every loss, after all the deaths they didnât even allow themselves to mourn, was it just a lie they kept saying to get by? Did they really live a life of no regrets, or were they just clinging to the phrase because it was easier than sitting in silence with the weight of a decision they couldnât undo?
Hangeâs eyes softened as she stepped closer, looking at him like she needed him to understand that nothing between them had changed, if anything she was holding on to him now more than ever, and she needed him to see that before he slipped too far into whatever guilt he was drowning in.
âI donât think I have it in me to resent you. Not when you stood by me through everything. Resenting you means hating you... and I canât bring myself to do that.â
The anger in Leviâs eyes slowly faded. His fist unclenched. The fire that had built up in him settled into something heavier. Sadness? Guilt? He didnât know. He just felt empty.
How could she still look at him with such kindness? In what world did he deserve this?
âDo you understand, Hange? It was because of me that youâre in this situation. My decision to let Erwin die brought you nothing but burden and pain! Just admit it!â Levi raised his voiceâhe didnât mean toâbut he didnât know how else to deal with the guilt clawing at his insides.
âWe had no knowledge of what the future entailed! Stop blaming yourself for something none of us could have predicted! Since when did you became an emotional asshole? I liked it more when you were just an asshole!â Hange snapped back.
âWhy is it so hard for you to accept that this isnât your fault? If staying by my side is just some twisted way to atone, then maybe you shouldnât be here at all!â Hange sank into the chair behind her desk, closed her eyes, and pinched the bridge of her nose. This is so frustrating. All of this. Him. Everything.
âDonât forget to close the door on your way out!â she said with indignation.
Levi turned his back to her and was about to head to the door. He was about to open the door and leave. This conversation wasnât helping. He didnât want to say anything else heâd regret come morning.
When she heard his retreating footsteps, Hange looked up, afraid that he might not come back.
âThatâs it? Youâre really going to leave?â
Levi froze. There was a subtle crack in her voice.
Was she crying?
He turned his head. She was standing now, eyes wide, disbelief etched on her face. In the dim light of her office, he saw the tears brimming in her eyes.
What was he doing? Why is he acting so childish?
He walked back to her and gently guided her to sit. To steady her, he knelt on one knee beside her, quiet, grounding support. Now at the same levelâHange sitting, Levi kneelingâshe leaned forward and rested her forehead on his shoulder. She was exhausted. Completely drained. She buried her face deeper into his shoulder, not wanting him to see her like this. So weak. So vulnerable.
Levi hadnât anticipated her closing the distance like that. But he didnât pull away. Instead, without thinking, he placed his hand gently on her head, just beneath her messy bun, letting her know it was okay. She didnât need to pretend with him.
The moment she felt his touch, her tears broke free. Her cries were silent, but the tremors in her body said everything. And Levi felt itâall of itâthe weight she had carried, the grief, the guilt, and frustration.
For a moment, they stayed like that. Neither moved. Both of them wishing time would slow down, just a little.
It was Hange who broke the silence between them.
She turned her head slightly, her lips almost brushing Leviâs neck.
âIâm sorry. Donât go. Please... stay.â The words were soft, hesitant, filled with something unspoken. Something she wasnât sure she had the right to ask for.
Hange was too close now. Her lips barely grazing his neck, her breath warm against his skin. Leviâs heart began to beat fasterâfaster than he was prepared for.
When he didnât respond, Hange turned to face him. Her eyes were still wet from crying, but they glistened now under the low light, showing vulnerability she rarely let anyone see.
Her nearness, his heartbeat, the silence tightening between them, it was unbearable, charged with something neither of them could name, and in that breathless pause, all it would take was one more step, one more second, and thereâd be no turning back.
Levi clenched his fists just to ground himself, to distract from the way her breath on his skin made him feel like his own was stolen.
âIâm not going anywhere, four-eyes.â
He moved his hand to her face, gently wiping away a tear that had fallen. The heat of his palm lingered on her skin, making her shiver despite herself.
This was newâunknown territory for them. They had always known there was something unspoken between them. But neither dared to name it. Not until tonight.
Their eyes locked again. Time stilled, air thick between them, like even the world around them knew something was about to change.
Levi was the first to move.
His hand slid behind her neck, fingers brushing the edge of her hairline. He pulled her closer, just enough to feel her breath on his lips. His own breath was shallow, chest rising and falling in silent anticipation.
When she didnât pull away, he closed the distance between them.
Their lips met in a kiss that felt like a sin, like something borrowed from a world that wasnât theirs. Like grief, like longing, like something that had been aching to happen but had no place in their world.
It was soft at first. Then deeper. More desperate. Their breaths turned ragged, hands unsure of where to hold or stop. Like they were chasing time theyâd never had to begin with.
ThenâA soft knock on the door shattered everything.
The kiss ended as soon as it started, and reality hit hard. Hange was the Commander, Levi was the Captain, and all he could think about was how he mightâve compromised her, how someone like him shouldâve known better.
Levi slowly pulled away, creating space between them again. The air felt colder now.
Both of them were breathless. Neither spoke right away. They just sat there, trying to find the ground beneath them again.
âIâm sorry, Hange. I... I wasnât thinking straight. We shouldnât haveââ
âYes. That was out of line,â Hange said quickly, too quickly. Her tone firmer than she felt inside.
Levi looked at her, guilt flickering across his face. Then came the silence.
âHey. No regrets, right?" Hange smiled, trying to sound reassuring. "And next time, maybe donât kiss your Commander like that. Iâm pretty sure that counts as insubordination." She tried to joke, but her voice wavered just enough to give her away.
With that, a faint smile crept onto Leviâs lips. A tired, sad smile.
âNo regrets.â
He reached out once more, this time more gently, and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, softly. Like he was afraid the moment would vanish. He took one last look at her, as if trying to memorize every inch of her face, the way her hazel eyes shimmered in that dim-lit room.
This was the version of Hange he wanted to remember. Because no one knew what tomorrow would bring. Because in their world, loving someone didnât mean livingâit meant dying for them.
Hange placed her hand over Leviâs, leaning into the touch.
âNot yet... but maybe after all of this, when weâre freeâwe could start where we left off.â
A silent promise only the two of them understood.
Without saying a word, Levi rose to his feet. He walked towards the door, his steps slow, reluctant. Just before he opened it, he stopped. His expression shifted, stoic once more, the mask slipping back into place.
He opened the door, and the hallway light spilled into Hangeâs office, briefly illuminating the space between them.
And then he was gone.

Hange stopped abruptly in front of a small shop filled with colorful treats and festive pastries. They squinted at the display window before turning to Levi with a grin.
âWhat now, Four-Eyes?â he asked with a scowl, trying to force back the irritation in his tone.
Hange clasped their hands together, eyes wide and imploring.
âLevi, please!â they whined, fluttering their eyelashes in that ridiculously cute way they both knew he couldnât resist.
âThey sell those amazing candied chestnuts, the best in town really, and I need them to snack on tonight, you know. Could you buy me some while I... well, while I handle something else down the street?â
Levi raised a suspicious eyebrow. âWhat kind of âsomething elseâ?â
They leaned in with a playful smile. Their voice dropped to what they thought was a whisper, their breath tickling his ear. âItâs a secret!âÂ
âFine,â Levi muttered with a sigh. âBut be back soon or Iâll leave you here.â
Hange beamed at him, kissed his cheek and, before he could protest, slipped into the crowd.
ââșââ .
His errand quickly taken care of, Levi decided to wait for Hange by a lamppost adorned with garlands next to the candy shop.
Scattered snowflakes drifted lazily in the cold air, delicately dusting his nose and eyelashes. With the sweet scent of roasted chestnuts wafting from a stall nearby or the distant echo of Christmas carols, the holiday cheer was slowly taking over him, more than he cared to admit.
He let his eyes wander over the busy street for a while.
A young boy bundled in a thick coat tugged at his grandfatherâs sleeve, pointing excitedly at a toy shop, his big blue eyes full of dreams.
A few steps away, a couple was sitting close together on a bench, sharing a red scarf and laughing softly, their cheeks flushed from the cold or from something else, Levi couldn't tell.
He fished his phone out of the back pocket of his jeans as soon as it buzzed with a call from his best friend.
Erwin: Hey Levi! Howâs your weekend so far? Are you busy?
Levi: Trapped in Hangeâs holiday frenzy. Shitty snow everywhere. Fucking crowded. Your boy-scoutâs ass would probably love it
Erwin: So, gift shopping it is?
Levi huffed, glancing down the street where Hange had disappeared.
Levi: Dragged me around town all afternoon, then sent me to buy some fucking treats
He snorted.
Levi: Got diabetes just looking at those by the way
Erwin: Come on Levi! Donât pretend to be pissed, we both know youâre exactly where you want to be!
Levi rolled his eyes. He could hear the smirk in his friendâs tone but decided to ignore it.
Levi: They're plotting something. Probably buying more junk as we speak
Erwin chuckled.
Erwin: Be nice every once in a while, I promise it wonât kill you
Levi: If âniceâ means standing around in the cold carrying a shitton of paper bags like a pack mule, Iâd rather not be
Erwin: Never took you for a drama queen before
Levi clicked his tongue.
Levi: Drama queen huh? Well now, all I know is that Iâm freezing my ass off waiting for them to finish whatever shit theyâre up to
Erwin: Same old story for years. Let me guess -you didnât want to go out, Hange insisted, and you gave in
Levi: Easier than arguing. You know how fucking stubborn they can be
His voice softened imperceptibly.
Levi: Besides, itâs just a few gifts. And candy.
Erwin: Youâll never admit it but youâre a softie, Levi
Levi: JustâŠshut the fuck up, dumbass
Erwin: All right, all right! See you tomorrow at the gym then?
Levi: Yeah, see you tomorrow
Sliding his phone back into his pocket, Levi adjusted his scarf and scanned the crowd again.
His fingers clutched at the bag holding the sweetmeats, and the corners of his lips twitched upward when the thought of Hangeâs happy grin crossed his mind.
He glanced down the street again, finally spotting Hange weaving through the crowd, a red bag in their hand.
âWhat took you so long?â he asked gruffly as they finally joined him.
Hange plucked the bag of candy from him with a wink but didnât reply.
âThanks, Levi. These are gonna be perfect for our Hallmark movie night.â
âYeah, yeah. Letâs go before you get any more stupid ideas,â he muttered, falling into step beside them.
Hange looped their arm through his, chattering away about the movies they had already picked for later.
ââșââ .
The cold bit at their cheeks as they strolled through the snowy streets, their breath fogging in the crisp air. Twinkling lights lined the rooftops and shop windows, reflecting off the icy sidewalks.
Hange clung to Levi, their boots crunching in the snow. They had forgotten their mittens back home -again- but they were bundled in their usual chaotic style -layers upon layers of mismatched clothes topped with an absurdly fluffy, reindeer-themed hat. Its floppy antlers bobbed with every enthusiastic step.
He gave their head a flat look and tugged at the ear flaps. âThat crap on your head looks ridiculous.â
âYou mean ridiculously warm!â Hange replied with enthusiasm. âYouâre just jealous you donât have one.â
âOver my dead body,â he deadpanned.
Hange laughed, a boisterous, cheerful sound that always stirred something warm in his chest.
His gloved hand tightened slightly around theirs, his fingers curling to shield them from the cold, his thumb brushing the ring on their finger.
âDo you think Moblit will like the sketchbook? The leather cover is so beautiful.â
âItâll suit him,â Levi said. His tone was flat, but Hange caught the faint note of approval.
âI canât wait to hang the ornament we picked! Itâs so pretty!â
âShould stop swinging your shopping bags then for fuckâs sake, Four-Eyes. Yâgonna break it before it even makes it to the tree.â
âOk, I'll stop, I promise, Shorty!â
They turned their face toward the glowing shop windows, cheeks and nose pink from the cold. They beamed as they took in the festive decor.
âIsnât this the best time of year? Just look at all these lights, Levi!â
He grunted but his pace slowed to keep in step with them.
âNot bad,â he conceded.
ââșââ .
They strolled at a leisurely pace, Hange darting from one shop window to the next, their excitement bubbling over in a string of delighted âohsâ and âahs.â Every so often, they dragged Levi along, pointing out the displays -a miniature train circling a snowy village or dolls and plushies all dressed up for a tea party.
Levi followed, his usual grumbles shushed by their enthusiasm.
When Hange stopped in front of a window, he paused, letting them press their nose on the glass. Inside, a collection of elegant scarves and gloves were neatly arranged, one catching their attention.
âDo you think Nanaba would wear this?â Hange mused, their breath fogging up the glass. âShe loves practical gifts, but this one is also stylish.â
Levi didnât answer immediately. Instead, his gaze lingered on them -the way the soft lights danced across their face, the way the sparkle of excitement lit up their eyes. And for some reason, their ridiculous hat somehow made them look endearingly cute.
He felt something swell in his chest, a comforting warmth pushing aside the winter chill.
Hange turned abruptly, catching his gaze. They smiled, wide and unguarded. âWhat?â
âNothing,â he muttered, his hand tightening slightly around theirs.
Their grin grew, but they didnât press him further, their fingers squeezing his back.
Hange leaned in suddenly and pressed a quick, warm kiss to Leviâs cheek, the chill of the night momentarily pushed further aside.
Levi froze, his ears turning faintly pink beneath the streetlights.
âTch. Whatâs that for?â he groaned, shooting them a sideway glance.
âFor being adorable,â Hange teased.
âIâm not-â he started, but the words caught in his throat as Hange squeezed his hand and kissed him briefly on the lips this time, their laughter ringing softly in the frosty air.
He sighed, shaking his head, but his lips twitched ever so slightly. The warmth from their kiss lingered, spreading through his chest.
âCome on,â he said, his voice softening. âGotta walk or weâll freeze to death.â
Hange laughed again, their breath clouding between them, and let Levi tug them away from the window.
âI hope Erwinâs going to like the book,â Hange said. âHe always had a soft spot for poetry.â
âHeâd better,â Levi muttered. âYou spent twenty minutes debating between that and the essay about war strategy.â
âIt was a tough choice!â Hange defended, their voice rising in mock indignation. âYou canât rush picking a gift for a friend, Levi.â
âPretty sure heâll just squeeze it in his shelf,â Levi shot back, but there was no bite to his words.
Hange laughed, turning to face him as they walked backward, gesturing animatedly. âYouâre so-â
Their words cut off abruptly as their foot caught a patch of hidden ice. They yelped, arms flailing, but before they could hit the ground, Levi moved instinctively, catching them in one swift motion.
âHange-â Levi uttered in a breath as he steadied them against his chest, his arms wrapping protectively around their waist.
For a moment, Hange had frozen, their hand clutching at their coat near the middle of their body as they regained their balance. Their face had paled slightly, but they quickly managed a shaky laugh, brushing it off. âThat was close.â
Leviâs brows furrowed with concern as he studied their face.
âIâm fine,â Hange said quickly, their voice a little too light as they straightened up. A faint, sheepish smile crossed their lips, but their usual energy seemed slightly subdued. âGuess I got distracted.â
Levi didnât look convinced. His grip lingered for a bit longer, his concerned gaze flicking over them before he finally let go.
âWatch where youâre stepping next time, idiot,â he scolded, though his voice lacked its usual sharpness.
Hange gave a small nod, glancing away as if to gather themself. Leviâs focus shifted briefly, catching the warm glow spilling out from a nearby window.
âLook,â he said quietly, gesturing with a tilt of his head.
Without hesitation, they started weaving through the maze of chairs and patrons. âI call dibs on the table!â
âWait, there are still cups on it-â Levi tried to protest.
But Hange was already sliding into the booth, grinning as they sat down. âItâs the same table, Levi. We have to sit here.â
Levi frowned, glancing at the mess of empty cups and stained napkins left by the previous customers. âReally? Looks like itâs been hit by a tornado.â
âDonât be such a grump.â Hange grinned, shoving their paper bags under the table. âCome on, itâs the perfect spot. Itâs nostalgic!â
Levi sighed, but despite his grumbling, he sat down on the chair across from them.
âNostalgic my ass.â
Levi got rid of his coat and scarf, folding them in a neat pile beside Hange.
His eye twitched as he looked at the scattered cups, their contents long gone but the mess still there. He let out a heavy sigh and immediately started to gather the dirty cups, sliding them to the side.
âLevi, seriously? Itâs not like anyone cares,â Hange said, watching him with an amused grin as he stacked the cups into a pile.
âWell, I care,â he muttered, flicking a napkin out of the way. He wrinkled his nose. âItâs disgusting.â
âIâm not cleaning,â he grumbled. âJust... organizing.â
Before he could finish, the waitress arrived, smiling brightly as she swept the mess away effortlessly. âIâll get these for you,â she said, flashing them a warm look.
Levi barely glanced up, his face already in its signature scowl. âFucking finally,â he groaned under his breath.
The waitress wiped the table down, handing them menus with a cheerful âHere you go!â before turning to leave.
Hange chuckled. âYouâre such a clean freak, you know.â
âObviously not, since I live with a slob,â Levi muttered. âJust didnât want to sit at a garbage dump.â
Hange tugged off their ridiculous hat, letting out a satisfied sigh. But when they ran a hand through their hair, Levi couldn't help but snort.
âNow your hair looks even worse than your hat,â he muttered, leaning back in his seat.
Hange chuckled. âHey, no need to be so mean.â
Levi just clicked his tongue in response, casting an unimpressed glance at the wild mass of hair.
Hange raised an eyebrow. âWhat, you donât think itâs cute?â
Levi didnât answer, but he stood abruptly, pushing his chair back with a scrape. Unexpectedly, he leaned over the table, reaching for their hair. With soft, careful gestures, he began to smooth out the tangles, his fingers gently carding through the tousled locks.
Hange blinked in surprise at the unusual display, but as Leviâs focused expression softened, a real smile spread across their face -genuine and bright, something that lit up their eyes.
Leviâs nose and cheeks were flushed, his ears red from the cold -though Hange couldnât help but hope the icy weather was not the only cause. They felt a wave of affection surge through them, their heart beating a little faster as they watched him.
âYouâre cute, you know that?â Hange said softly, barely a whisper, as they let their smile widen.
Levi, completely unaware of the adoration in their gaze, mumbled something that sounded like a protest but didnât pull away.
Just as he tucked a strand of hair behind Hangeâs ear, the waitress came back to their table with a bright smile.
âWell, arenât you two the cutest lovebirds,â she said, teasing, as she set a small notepad down the table.
Hange giggled at the nickname.
âLovebirds? How sweet!â they cooed, their face lighting up.
Levi, on the other hand, was clearly annoyed.
âLovebirds? What the hell?â He grumbled under his breath. âWhat are we, spotty teens?â
âOh, sorry, I didnât mea-,â the waitress started.
Hange kicked Leviâs ankle under the table and smiled brightly at the waitress. âDonât mind Mr. Grumpy Pants,â they said with a chuckle. âHe's a decent little dude once you get to know him.â
Levi let out an exaggerated sigh, but Hange could see the faintest hint of a smile tugging at his lips.
The waitress scribbled down their orders. âIâll be right back with your drinks.â
As she turned and walked away, Hange and Levi locked eyes, reaching out over the table to intertwine their fingers.
It seemed it had been ages since their first date. Yet, in this very moment, in this very place, everything just felt the same as it had that day.
Levi had been sitting at a small table by the window for a while now, his expression unreadable, but his gaze soft as he stared outside.
Along the street, beeches and pin oaks were shedding their leaves, fiery reds, oranges, and yellows drifting down in the cold wind to the sidewalk below. A few passers-by, wrapped in their jackets, occasionally paused to admire the beautiful display of fall colors. Leviâs eyes briefly lingered on them in the same detached way he observed everything around him.
Levi looked effortlessly handsome, in his simple but elegant outfit, his well-cut jacket fitting him just right.
He glanced at his watch for the third time since he arrived and sighed.
He leaned back in his seat and grabbed the menu, his gaze momentarily shifting to the words printed on it. He wasnât hungry, not really, but the menu offered a distraction while he waited.
As he scanned the list, he remained blissfully unaware of the admiring glances exchanged between the waitress and the cashier girl, both of them casting furtive looks at him from behind the counter.
The waitress and cashier exchanged a quick, amused glance before giggling softly, their eyes trailing over Hangeâs disheveled state.
Levi, however, frowned as he watched them, his eyes narrowing at the sight of Hangeâs hair sticking out in every direction.
As Hange spotted Levi at the table and waved at him, their smile widening, the girlsâ mouths dropped open in surprise.
Their eyes flicked between the two of them, slowly realizing that this was the person Levi had been waiting for. It hit them both at once, their expressions shifting from curiosity to astonishment as they witnessed the connection between Levi, who seemed so quiet and composed, and the exuberant person now making their way toward him.
"Sorry Iâm late! The windâs insane today," Hange said in an animated tone.
Levi didnât reply immediately, but a hint of disapproval flickered in his eyes as he took in their unkempt state, spotting leaves stuck in their wild hair, a tangled mess of autumn colors.
Completely oblivious to their own disarray -and to Leviâs softening gaze- Hange reached into their pocket, pulling out a heart-shaped golden leaf and holding it out to Levi with a grin.
âFor you!â
Levi took the leaf, his expression neutral.
âYouâre a mess,â he muttered, âand youâre late.â
"So sorry to be late but those leaves are so pretty! I had to find the perfect one for you! You see, the heart shape? This is basically natureâs way of blessing our date.â
Levi looked down at the leaf in his hand, then back up at Hange, his lips twitching ever so slightly as if he held back a smile.
The waitress joined them as he thanked Hange for their unusual gift.
Hange leaned forward to make their order. âIâll have the pumpkin chai latte, with extra sugar and extra whipped cream, and, oh! Do you have any sprinkles?â
They looked at the waitress with wide, sparkling eyes.
Levi didnât even blink as he ordered, âBlack tea. No sugar.â
Hange raised an eyebrow. âSeriously? You're just gonna drink... sadness in a cup?â
Levi glanced at them, trying his best to suppress the slight irritation creeping into his voice. âSays the one ordering dessert instead of coffee.â
âOh, come on! It's fall! Itâs a vibe!" Hange insisted, grinning. "Whatâs better in life than whipped cream and sprinkles?â
Levi scoffed, shaking his head. âNot getting diabetes every time you drink coffee?â
âJust let me enjoy my dose of comfort while you sip your bland, depressing beverage,â Hange teased.
Their drinks arrived shortly and Hange started to tell one of their passionate stories, waving their arms dramatically. âOkay, so the other day I was reading this book about quantum physics and-â
Levi listened quietly, drinking in their animated features as he took a careful sip of his hot tea.
â-itâs fascinating!â Hange continued, oblivious to his lingering gaze. âSo, what if we could shift our density to one similar to gas and phase through walls?â
Levi rolled his eyes. âWho the hell would care about something that useless?â
Hange grinned widely. âWell, I find it fascinating. And fun! What about you, huh? Whatâs your idea of fun?â
âI donât know⊠Cleaning, maybeâŠâ
Hange chuckled, but before they could reply, Levi reached across the table, his fingers brushing through their tousled hair. âGot a leaf in your hair,â he whispered.
He gently pulled the golden leaf from the mess of hair, his touch surprisingly delicate, as though he had done this a hundred times before.
Hange froze, blinking up at him, caught off guard by the sudden attention. Their heartbeat quickened. He had never been so close to them, and this all felt somewhat⊠intimate.
Totally unaware of the effect his small gesture had, Levi sat back to sip his tea.
A blush crept up their neck, but before overthinking Leviâs gesture, they cleared their throat and went back to their story, gesturing wildly as if nothing had happened.
âSo, yeah, imagine if we could just phase through walls! The possibilities would be endless!â
Eager to return to their usual chatter, Hange went on blabbering about physics with animated gestures until their hand, in the middle of their rambling, swept across the table, knocking their pumpkin chai latte off.
The drink toppled over, splashing onto the table and spilling across Hangeâs sleeve.
âOh, crap!â Hange grabbed a napkin and immediately started scrambling to clean up the mess, though all they were really doing was spreading the stain.
Levi sighed, pushing his tea aside, then reached into his pocket for his neatly folded handkerchief. Without a word, he slid it across the table toward them.
Hange looked at the handkerchief before meeting Leviâs eyes with a sheepish grin.
âOh, Iâm so sorry, Levi, I swear Iâm not usually this clumsy-"
Clearly not convinced, Levi raised an eyebrow.
âAnd I don't want to ruin your handkerchief.â
âDonât bother. Youâll probably spill something else on it anyway,â he deadpanned.
Hange chuckled nervously. "Fair enough⊠Iâll wash it and return it, of course."
Levi leaned back in his chair as Hange wiped their sleeve, and his gaze briefly drifted out of the window, his fingers tracing lightly the rim of his cup. He thought of Erwin, who had been so sure he would get along with Hange.
"Seriously, Levi," Erwin had said a week ago, when Levi hesitated, "I can tell you two are going to hit it off. Just say yes to the invite. Youâll be glad you did."
Levi had been annoyed by the unsolicited advice at the time, but now, as he looked at Hange across from him, he told himself that maybe⊠Well, maybe Erwin had been right.
His hand brushed against Hangeâs briefly as they both reached for the napkins at the same time. A small spark of warmth radiated from the touch.
He glanced over at Hange, still too caught up in cleaning the last traces of whipped cream from their earlier mishap. Levi would probably never admit it aloud, but Erwin was right. He was glad he had said yes.
The conversation resumed, Hange trying to act like they weren't mortified over the spill.
When the waitress returned to clean the table, she winked at the cashier girl who stood by the counter, both of them exchanging a knowing look before focusing on their task.
They had noticed the soft way Levi and Hangeâs eyes lingered on each other, the small, unspoken moments that they werenât quite aware of -the way Leviâs hand brushed Hangeâs, how Hangeâs smile widened when their eyes met.
It was obvious that something was shifting between the two.
The waitress quickly cleared the last of the napkins and mugs, trying to remain professional, but a small, amused smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
When she reached the counter, the cashier girl leaned over, still watching the couple from afar. âSomethingâs going on, huh?â she murmured.
The waitress shook her head with a chuckle. âThey donât even know it yet.â
Hange pushed their chair back abruptly, their usual whirlwind energy somewhat coming back. âLetâs go for a walk,â they proposed, tugging at their coat. âI know a park nearby.â
âOk,â he muttered, rising to go and pay the check.
Levi soon reached the counter and handed over the cash, his eyes drifting toward Hange as the cashier counted out his change. They were near the door, fumbling with their scarf as it caught awkwardly in their coat. However, their smile, bright and unbothered, lit up their face.
He turned away, walking a few paces to the side to slip his wallet back into his pocket.
His fingers brushed the soft edges of the leaf Hange had given him earlier. The absurdity of it -a heart-shaped leaf, of all things, really?- should have annoyed him. But instead, he felt an unfamiliar warmth bloom in his chest.
âTheyâre cute together,â the cashier whispered as he put on his gloves.
âDefinitely mismatched,â the waitress murmured, lowering her voice. âBut, somehow, it works. Heâs all gruff and serious and handsome; and theyâre... well...â
Levi caught enough of their comments to make his brow twitch.
The waitress smirked. âMaybe he has a thing for chaos.â
âThe way heâs watching them?â the cashier continued,âBet he doesnât even realize heâs totally smitten.â
The word made Leviâs jaw tighten. He wrapped his scarf around his neck and turned abruptly toward the door.
Hange had finally managed to get their coat on and grinned up at him, oblivious to the way he was still recovering from the girlsâ words.
âAll set?â they asked cheerfully, entirely unaware of his internal turmoil.
âYeah. Letâs go.â
Levi pushed the door open for them, the sound of the two girlsâ muffled giggles following them as they stepped outside.
ââșââ .
The brisk air was refreshing. As soon as they entered the quiet park, Hange veered off the path, scanning the ground. They crouched to pick up a golden leaf, then another, holding them up to study their shape and texture.
Levi watched them from a step behind, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The cold wind didnât bother him when a faint warmth crept up his neck as he observed their overwhelming, almost childish enthusiasm. It was chaotic, messy, yet oddly endearing.
They reached a small pond and Hange stopped, gazing at their reflection in the water with an unusual frown.
âIâm terrible at this,â they said suddenly, breaking the silence. âDating, I mean. Iâm... too much. People donât usually stick around.â
Levi stopped beside them, glancing at their solemn expression before speaking in a gentle tone. âMaybe you just havenât met someone who can handle it.â
Hangeâs head turned toward him.
They locked eyes and silence hung in the air between them for a while.
Then, a mischievous smile curled on their lips. âHandle it, huh? Are you volunteering for the job?â
Their eyelashes fluttered playfully.
Levi rolled his eyes, but his faint smirk betrayed him. âTch. Donât read too much into it.â
They continued walking along the park path, the autumn leaves crunching softly under their feet. Hange slowed every so often to examine a particular leaf or to show him the different species of trees, rambling enthusiastically about them.
Levi followed silently, his hands tucked into his pockets, his gaze never leaving Hange.
They passed a vendor selling small trinkets and plush toys. Among them, a chubby titan plush caught Hangeâs eye, and they froze.
âLevi!â they gasped, pointing at it with childlike excitement. âLook at this cutie! I need it.â
âA plushie, really? What are you, five?â Levi deadpanned
He glanced at the stuffed toy. Of course, it was ridiculously huge. However, he thought, he hadnât brought flowers to his date after all. So, he couldnât do otherwise than oblige now, could he?
When he handed the plush to a beaming Hange, they hugged it like it was the most precious treasure in the world.
âThis will go perfectly with my collection!â Hange exclaimed.
Levi raised an eyebrow. âCollection of what? Ugly monsters?â
âHey! Itâs cute,â they protested, holding the plush protectively. âAnd you got it for me, which makes it extra special.â
Levi scoffed but glanced away, embarrassed by the warmth creeping up his cheeks.
He cleared his throat before speaking again. âWe should go, itâs getting dark out here.â
They crossed the park at a leisurely pace.
âYou know, when I told Eyebrows I was asking you out, he gave me this weird smirk, like heâd predicted it or something,â Hange blurted out after a while.
Levi side-eyed them, hands fidgeting in his pockets. âSounds like him.â
âActually, he told me, âLevi would enjoy your company more than he lets on.â I think he oversold it.â
Levi chuckled.
âDid he bribe you to say yes?â Hange asked.
âAll he said was that you were tolerable,â Levi replied with a smirk, his tone deadpan. âHe left out the part where youâd try to drown the table in chai latte.â
âSo he did scheme!â Hange exclaimed. âI knew it! Not that Iâm complaining thoughâŠâ
Levi glanced sideways at them again, noticing the faint flush on their cheeks.
They had reached the edge of the park when Hange stopped suddenly at the corner where they had to part ways.
âThanks for walking me,â Hange said. âIâm this way.â
They gestured toward their street, their hand lingering mid-air as if unsure whether to wave or stay still.
Levi shifted his weight, smoothing down the golden leaf still tucked in his pocket.
âYouâd probably have tripped and stumbled in the mud otherwise.â
Hange laughed, their voice warm. âSounds like something I could do, yeah.â
The street felt quiet for a moment. Hange looked at Levi, their usual confidence shifting into something hesitant, almost shy.
âWellâŠâ They tilted their head, a small, nervous smile forming.
Before Levi could think it through, his hand moved, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair away from their forehead. The gesture was brief but tender, catching Hange off guard. Their eyes widened slightly, their cheeks warming as they stood frozen for a second.
Levi pulled his hand back, his expression unreadable except for the faintest hint of something soft in his gaze. âYour hairâs a fucking mess, Four-Eyes.â
The tension just vanished and they both laughed softly.
As Levi was about to turn to leave, Hange surprised him, leaning in and brushing the lightest, most hesitant kiss against his cheek.
âThanks for today,â they said quietly, stepping back before Levi could reply.
Levi stared at them, momentarily at a loss for words.
His face burned, whether from the cold or something else entirely, he couldnât say.
âJust donât be late next time,â he replied, walking away before Hange could see the faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
Hange watched him go before turning and heading home, their smile never fading.
Levi and Hange were lost in their own small world at the corner table, the humming of conversations and the occasional clink of porcelain blurred in the background. Steam curled up from their drinks, warming their cold hands and flushing their cheeks.
Hange took a generous sip of their overly sweet concoction and sighed contentedly.
âThis really takes me back,â they said, their voice tinged with nostalgia. âIt feels like nothingâs changed here.â
Levi hummed quietly in agreement, his black tea cooling in front of him. His eyes drifted to Hangeâs hand resting on the table, fingers drumming absently against the wood. Without thinking, his own hand shifted closer, brushing against theirs in a fleeting touch.
Hange glanced up, surprised by the uncharacteristic gesture, but Levi kept his gaze fixed on his cup. âI still have it, you know,â he confessed, his voice low, almost reluctant.
âHave what?â Hange tilted their head, their curiosity piqued.
âThe leaf,â Levi said simply, his thumb lightly grazing over Hangeâs knuckles now. âThe one you gave me that day. Pressed it in a book.â He paused, feeling the heat rise to his face. âStill there.â
Hange blinked, their expression softening into something unmistakably tender. âYouâre kidding.â
âDo I look like Iâm joking?â Levi grumbled, finally meeting their gaze.
Hangeâs face broke into a radiant smile, one that made Leviâs chest tighten in that familiar, inexplicable way. âLevi Ackerman, you always surprise me,â they teased.
âTch. Donât get used to it,â he deadpanned. However, he didnât pull his hand away, his thumb slightly brushing their ring instead.
Hange hesitated, their fingers curling around the edge of their mug as they shifted slightly in their seat. Their eyes flickered between Leviâs face and the steam rising from their drink before finally settling on the view outside the window..
âThat first date. I still think about it often.â
Levi watched them quietly, his brow furrowing slightly at their uncharacteristic hesitation. âYou do?â he asked softly, as though he wasnât sure if he should press.
Hange nodded, their gaze dropping for a moment before they bit their lip, a faint smile playing at the corners of their mouth.
âYeah. EspeciallyâŠâ Their voice trailed off as they glanced again toward the window to watch the soft snow falling outside. âThe plushie you got me.â
Leviâs lips tugged upward as he thought about the ugly stuffed toy sitting in Hangeâs office. âDonât know why youâve kept that thing all this time.â
âItâs sentimental,â they add in a whisper. âYou got it for me and I love it.â
They fell silent, the weight of their words hanging in the air for a while.
Levi gently squeezed their hand and their eyes met.
Then suddenly, as though deciding something, Hange leaned down, fumbling among the paper bags resting by their feet. They picked up the red one, their fingers tightening on the handles as they placed it on the table in front of Levi.
He blinked at the bag, then at Hange, who was now watching him with a nervous expression.
âWhatâs this?â he asked, narrowing his eyes slightly.
âI was going to wait until Christmas,â Hange began quickly, their words tumbling over one another. âBut this⊠this just feels like the right moment.â
Levi raised a skeptical eyebrow but pulled the bag toward him, carefully lifting out the contents. His movements stilled when he realized what it was: a soft, absurdly detailed titan onesie.
For a moment, Levi said nothing, simply staring at the tiny outfit in his hands. His thumb brushed over the fabric, lingering on the little details -the ridiculous hood, the tiny mittens. Then his eyes flicked up to meet Hangeâs.
Their heart pounded as they studied his face for any reaction, their own nerves fraying with each passing second. âItâs, uh, a little⊠symbolic,â they started, biting their lip again.
His lips parted slightly, and for a fleeting second, Hange swore they saw a flicker of emotion in his usually composed expression.Â
He cleared his throat.
âYou⊠Youâre serious?â he asked, almost breathless.
Hange simply nodded, their nervous smile giving way to something warmer, more certain.
Leviâs gaze dropped back to the onesie in his hands. He clicked his tongue, but the corners of his mouth turned upward, the faintest hint of a smile breaking through.
âA titan onesie. Of course you had to make it weird, Four-Eyes.â
Hange laughed, their shoulders relaxing as relief and joy washed over them. âWould you expect anything less from me?â
Levi didnât answer, but smiled instead, his eyes still on the onesie as his fingers brushed over it again, this time more gently.
The room was quiet, save for the soft ticking of the clock on the bedside table. The flickering glow of the street lights peeked through a crack in the curtain, painting patterns and shadows on the walls.
Levi lay behind Hange, his arm draped protectively over their side. They were sound asleep, their breathing slow and even, their hair a messy halo over the pillow.
He could feel the gentle rise and fall of their chest beneath his arm, a steady rhythm that usually lulled him to sleep.
But tonight Leviâs eyes remained open, his gaze fixed on the ceiling. His mind raced with a muddle of thoughts he couldnât quite organize.
A dad. He was going to be a dad.
The thought alone sent an odd mix of feelings coursing through him -anticipation, fear, uncertainty. What the hell did he know about being a father? Could he even do this?
His chest tightened, but before the doubts could spiral further, he shifted closer to Hange, burying his nose in the crook of their neck. The faint earthy scent of their skin and the warmth of their body slowly shushed his anxious thoughts.
His hand brushed gently over their belly. He let out a quiet breath, and started to whisper in the dark as if the baby could somehow hear him.
âOi, brat. Hope you get the color of their eyes. Or their brains. Or maybe their enthusiasm, I donât fucking knowâŠ. Whatever, youâll be amazing like them anyway.â He chuckled. âDonât tell them or Four-Eyes will never let me hear the end of it.â
He pressed a kiss to the back of Hangeâs neck, soft and lingering.
âDonât know how that works but Iâll do my best. Weâll do our best. And Iâll love you just as much as I love them. I promise.â
As he kissed their warm skin again, Hange stirred faintly, letting out a quiet sigh before settling back into sleep. Levi closed his eyes, letting their presence soothe him.
For now, he would let the worry go.
For now, he would just hold them and cherish this moment.

What are your headcanons for levihan if Hange had survived?
thank you SO MUCH @quillsandblades, I love those sorts of questions
firstly, after they've calmed down from the war and the Rumbling, Hange wants to travel. She wants to see all sorts of sights, learn everything, see everything. Levi follows, inevitably. He's always had her back (he's always been her left eye), so now he goes with her. it's natural to follow her by now.
they don't speak about their feelings immediately. They rushed to confess when the world was ending, and now that it's not, something keeps them from doing it. They've held off for so long that they don't know how to let go of their reluctance. Armin and the others roll their eyes, but wave goodbye at them at the airport.
it's all right, though, because they get to travel together, and start a whole another life.
Hange sees all sorts of devices, ancient or not. She goes to museums, sees human history unfolding before her. Artworks, statues, declarations of war, peace treaties, rusty machines and legendary monuments.
Levi watches her and smiles. He sees the old Hange again, the one without the weight of the Wings of Freedom.
Levi starts to look younger without the stress lines. He smiles a bit more. Hange smiles a lot, and she returns to her old self gradually. They're both so proud of each other (which means extra teasing)
She tries weird spicy food, while he sticks to the beverages. She wants to make him eat, because "you can't know you don't like it if you've never tried"
later, she discovers the Rubik's cube. It takes her about two days to solve it (two days straight, without food, and Levi had to force her to sleep)
Eventually, they settle down. They both want to return to Paradis and live there in anonymity.
They find a remote house in the forest, near the river, like they once promised to. They prefer to be calm and isolated-- or at least choose when they want to interact with the world. They live together, of course, it feels natural by now. It would feel unnatural not to, after everything.
The house has two bedrooms.
They go to Historia's for lunch often. She and her husband share weird looks, but they never say anything. Her daughter calls them aunt and uncle. She climbs on Levi's lap, and he doesn't complain, he just holds her nonchalantly and lets her touch the shaved part of his undercut.
When he asks Hange why she's smiling like an idiot, she tells him it's nothing.
Did I mention that he lets Hange cut his hair?
Hange studies plants, birds, has adopted some animals from time to time despite what Levi says.
Somehow, Levi manages to clean the entire house in no time. He also bathes Hange, because some things never change.
"Don't put pressure on yourself, that's an order," Hange tells him. "You're not my superior anymore," he reminds her. That holds more weight than he intended it to. They're free.
The weight of memories becomes to much to bear, eventually. With all the free time they have, all they do is remember those they've lost. The family that broke up.
Hange gets up at nights and goes to Levi's room. They don't exchange many words, she just crawls into bed with him. They sleep side by side. Eventually, the second bedroom turns into a study.
They treat each other's injuries, apply the necessary balms to the scars and the burns every day. It becomes their routine. Hange sometimes kisses the scar on his eye when she's done, just to see him flustered.
Levi doesn't do exactly the same to the burns on her back, but the touch of his fingers is so deliberately featherlight that Hange can't help but shiver. It's something that comes naturally, because he wants to take care of her.
They get married. It's the only possible outcome. They both knew it would happen, they just needed time to adjust to their newfound freedom.
"it wasn't that obvious," Hange complains when Historia makes a remark one day about "how great, it was about time".
"it was, Commander," Historia says. "We all saw it coming."
they share anecdotes, and the evening passes with Hange saying "wait, you were jealous??" and "that's why you said that??"
they both feel flustered when Historia reveals they were basically the parents of the 104th. They knew, but still, it being said out loud hits different.
Mikasa was maid of honour.
(now, whether they have kids of their own is another story.)
They're both awkward af, mostly Levi. At first when Levi wants to kiss her, he gets extra serious, catches her attention like "oi" and maybe grabs her by the hair.
They feel like Erwin's gonna appear out of nowhere and tell them that they're being unprofessional lol
For a while (or a lot) every time Levi wakes up, he feels like he'll open his eyes and it will all have been a dream, and he'll wake up back in the barracks with two eyes and more people to lose.
so Levi seeks next to him, finds Hange, and holds her, breathes in the scent of the forest and the sea salt on her. Only then does he open his eyes, when he feels like it's safe to. He's never told her.
They visit the sea very often. Levi stands up from his wheelchair then, and they hold hands and look. Now, the sea doesn't hold promises and vows, it's just sea. Blue and beautiful. They watch sunsets and sleep in the sand and watch sunrises together.
the house is full of photos of them and their trips, and little souvenirs and plants and Hange's research.
I feel like they would become legends as the time passed. Of course, Hange is a well known "historical figure" as the 14th Commander, but Levi? There are no pictures of him, only oral tales about "a soldier so strong he could defeat 30 titans at once". Yeah, right, as if. Where's the proof?
Hange becomes a herbologist or zoologist or astronomer or everything. Maybe she becomes a professor and does her own research on a field she loves. Some of her students come to her house and they see Levi Freaking Ackerman chilling like "wassup"
and they ask "did you really kill like 100 titans" "were titans even real?" (because scepticism and because they were too young to remember) And Levi just says "no" and goes about his day.
(there are swords on the wall, though)
Levi prefers to stay at home and be at peace. He helps refugees, of course, and "helps around" with Historia's orphanage (kids run around and he calls them brats)
Hange has made a bet with herself as they grow older that Levi will end up with more wrinkles around his eyes than between his brows. She's never told anyone.
(the bet is proceeding well)
eventually they grow old together and watch their "grandkids" (Historia's kids, Jean's kids, Aruani's kids, Mikasa's adopted kids, etc)
The kids call them their grandparents and they absolutely don't mind. Levi chastises them, but not harshly.
He teaches the kids how to flip butterfly knives. What is Jean going to do, tell him not to?
They absolutely adore Hange. She makes up those fun games and teaches them a multitude of things (although a parent must always be around because her games are kinda dangerous)
Levi wears Hange's clothes. The trope where the girl wears her man's T-shirts, and whatever-- that's Levi. And he can pull them off.
Hange wears his clothes too. I mean, Levi has broad shoulders and although the shirts might be kinda short, it's a fashion choice and she looks fabulous. They've forgotten which clothes are whose. Sometimes they even buy them the "wrong" size for the other one to steal.
Okay this is long, I gotta stop. But send me more questions like this, people, I love them
Levi turned his head to look towards the person who laid down by him, teasingly laying a finger to their temple before he looked away once more âguess it could be all emptyâ they groaned aloud as they laid down by him. Surely, their body was aching. âThat's not what I mean, and you know itâ the smile on their face brought him much joy, perhaps his heart was even singing right now? Doing somersaults somewhere in there, maybe.
âNo? Then what?â A small smile rested on the short man's face as Hange pushed back up to face him, hanging over him. The sun shone through their hair, making them look more ethereal than usual. A halo around their head fit them well. His angel, his Hange.
âI mean, if my belly could speak right now, It would tell me: get off of the ground and find some grub to eat! I'm empty!â They delivered the act with much joy and laughter. Causing the world to feel as good and beautiful as the caramel colour of their frizzy hair in the sun.
âAnd if my back could speak, it would tell me: lay back down! He can hear you no matter, let me rest! And my arms would chime in the sameâ
âhmâ he lifted his hand up towards them, stopping himself from pushing their hair back, laying his arm over his face instead. âIf my eyes could speak right nowâ Levi decided to entertain their game. âThey would cry out, Spare me, they're too close, and they need a combâ
If his eyes could speak right now, they would rejoyce, speak over one another to get their point across, only to fail in doing so due to their excitement.
*They are the most beautiful thing we've ever seen, never have the sun kissed someone more perfect than them*
âHuh, if my eyes could speakâŠâ it seemed their eyes didn't have much to say, on behalf maybe, of their glasses. Dirty glasses in need of cleaning, the man just noticed. âIf my eye could speak, it would say.. Show me more!â Their laughter died down, instead a solemn expression took its place. âShow me more, in spite of the world we walk on, in spite of the pain we've suffered, in spite of our losses⊠show me more! Show us more! For somewhere out there- something new, and something good⊠will find us, it will come our way, it's about time.. and this will not Only be new, but more exciting than anything we've ever seen before!â As they spoke, they had turned their gaze towards the sky, as if speaking to the heavens above.
They then quickly turned their attention back to Levi, a wide grin on their face. âOr perhaps it'd Just scream, mourning the loss of it's siblingâ
âDumbassâ again he lifted his hand, this time gently smacking Hange's head, earning a joyful squeal.
For a moment their words had resonated with Levi, perhaps it was in fact time for something good to come chasing him, them-
Or perhaps the good was already sitting right by him? Rubbing their forehead while attempting to contain their laughter.
âIf-â Hange buckled over, taking a moment to let it all out, an exhausted laughter being blessed upon the ground. âIf my heart could speak right now. It would say.. maybe it's not all that badâ they sat up, their glasses in their hands, while wiping their warm tears as they pressed forth.
The man took a deep breath. He, too, allowed the exhaust to wash over him. âIf my.. if my heart could speak right nowâ again he reached for them, feeling them grow so distant to him. âIt would beg you not to goâ his breath came out with a tremble âdon't leave me, I don't think I can do this aloneâ
Erwin assigns Hange with a mission: finding a way to bond with Levi. Hange's methods are⊠unorthodox.

âYou want me to do WHAT?â Hangeâs voice came out squeakier than she anticipated. Then again, the tone was justified, given the absolute ânutty as a fruitcakeâ nature of the Commanderâs request.Â
âI said I want you to bond with him,â Erwinâs words were deliberately slow this time. He was standing by her desk in the science laboratory, the light from the candle dancing across his stern face.Â
âI heard what you saidâ Hange replied, her eyes wide open, outstretched hands waving aimlessly at the air in front of her âI just⊠why? How? How do I even-â
âHeâs been here a while but hasnât made friends with anyone so far.â the commander caught a glimpse of Hangeâs eye roll and sighed in response. âI usually stay out of your businesses, but given the nature of what we do, this intervention is necessary. Leviâs raw talent wonât be of much help if he is not able to trust his squad. Or vice-versa. So I need someone to⊠break the ice. To make him feel more comfortable with the Survey Corps. Someone to bond with him, so others follow suitâ
Hange listened carefully to Erwinâs words. Their leader, as usual, had his eyes on an important goal that the others hadnât seen yet.Â
âI understand that, Erwin. But why ask me?â Hange pointed towards herself as if she were a rotten apple at the market stall. âItâs not like Iâm someone he is particularly fond of. Hell, he seems to hate me even more than he hates Mike, and I heard that Mike shoved his head into a pool of sewage once!âÂ
âHe did no such thing.â
âReally?â
âYes. It was a puddle of muddy water. Anyway, Iâm asking you because everyone else is scared of himâÂ
âBut-â
âJust think of it as an experiment. What works? What doesn't work? Youâll find out. And if that doesnât motivate you, just remember that Iâm commander and this is an order.â As soon as the last word left the leaderâs lips, he turned on his heel and left the room.
Hange stood there for a good ten minutes, awestruck, pondering over what the hell had just happened. She couldn't deny her curiosity about the new captain. He came from a completely different background but his abilities were unmatched, even by the most experienced soldiers. His nonchalance also had some sort of appeal to her, like a mystery waiting to be solved, and it didnât hurt that he was so easy on the eyes (although she kept that last part to herself). Still, Erwinâs choice was weird. Hange thought that someone more charismatic and generally likable, such as Petra, would be the most obvious person for the job. Was the commander, again, seeing something ahead that was not yet clear to her? Maybe. Probably. But even if that was not the case, Hange wasnât one to back down from a challenge.
She took a bite of that nutty fruitcake and it tasted exciting and sweet. Fair enough. She set by the lab desk and started scribbling on a piece of paper. Letâs get this experiment going!
***
The perfect opportunity to set her plan in motion came up a few days later when they gathered in the mess hall after a particularly tiring training session with the new Special Operations Squad.Â
Hangeâs plan was⊠peculiar. She knew that to bond with Levi, she needed to find some common ground with him, but the captain was so damn closed! The only interest she knew he had was neatness. She was halfway through creating a plan to make their cleaning duty schedules coincide when it hit her: he apparently also liked poop talk. Seriously, for someone so obsessed with hygiene, that shorty sure talked a lot about excrement.
Hange ripped the previous plan and started to write down her new ideas. Erwin said she could think of this as an experiment, right? Then It was only right to approach the matter with the scientific method:
Observation: Levi is an introspective shorty who grunts at everyone, cleans obsessively, and talks a lot about feces.
Hypothesis: A poop joke will create a moment of positive connection with Levi.
Experiment: Tell Levi a good poop joke and observe his reaction.
Then, all she had to do was analyze the results and convey her conclusions to Erwin. It was definitely a bet, but one that might just pay off.
So Hange buried herself in research for two days, until she found the perfect joke and the right way to tell it. There was nothing else to do other than wait for the best opportunity to conduct her experiment, and when the soldiers sat at the mess hall to tell stories and relieve the tension from the training, Hange knew that it had arrived.
They sat facing each other through the small corridor, their backs leaning against the table tops behind them. Moblit, Hange, Erwin, Mike, and Nanaba on one bench, Gunther, Eld, Levi, Petra, and Oluo on the other, all drinking from their jugs, except for the new captain, whose chosen poison was tea.
âWhat about you, captain? Do you have any funny stories for us?â Petra asked, still laughing a bit while wiping the tears that had accumulated in her eyes. She seemed to be making an effort to put Levi at ease with his new squad. Hange made a note to herself to ask Erwin about that later.
âNo,â Levi answered dryly. Then, when he noticed the negative change in the young womanâs facial expression, he elaborated âNot many fun stories where I come from.â
âI have oneâ Hange raised her arm eagerly, breaking the uncomfortable silence, and, for once, her comrades seemed grateful that she decided to say something. âItâs a poop jokeâ.Â
âUgh,â Oluo said. From the corner of her eye, she saw Erwin giving her an inquisitive look. On her other side, Moblit had⊠was that fear on his face? Oh, Come on!
âSo, a bear and a rabbit are taking a dump in the woodsâŠâ Hange started, suppressing the grin that was forcing its way into her lips. She wasnât the best at telling jokes (always got too excited before the punchline) but she was trying her best this time. She couldnât let external conditions interfere with the results of the experiment. Her comedic timing needed to be perfect.Â
Oluo let out another groan. Was he really disgusted by the mention of feces or was he trying to emulate Levi? He seemed to be doing this a lot these days. Petra elbowed him and smiled at Hange. The rest of the Survey Corps all looked at the squad leader expectantly, some more amused than others, except for Levi, who had his eyes fixed on the teacup he was slowly bringing towards his lips.
âA bear and a rabbit are taking a dump in the woodsâ Hange started over. âAfter the bear is done with his business, he turns to the rabbit and says âHey, Rabbit. Do you have a problem with shit sticking to your fur?" ââWell, no. Iâm quite used to itâ Hange put in extra effort in making believable voices for the characters, which drew some laughter across the tables. Levi remained indifferent, taking a long sip of his tea. Hange continued.ââGoodâ, the bear says. Then he grabs the rabbit and wipes his ass with him.â
For one instant, the room went silent, except for the sound of liquid spurring out of Levi's partially closed lips. Hangeâs vision got blurry as particles of tea covered her lenses. The wetness of her face was uncomfortable, but she was focused on more pressing matters. Who was sitting directly in front of Levi, again? Crap! The scientist raised the glasses to her forehead and slowly looked to her right side. Like a wax figure, Erwin sat with furrowed brows and clenched lips, completely soaked in the brown liquid. One could believe he was a literal statue, had it not been for the painfully slow rhythm of his breathing, moving his chest up and down. Crap, crap, crap, crap!! As she thought this, a thick drop of tea traced a path down his left eyebrow. Yep. She was in deeper shit than that rabbit.Â
Hangeâs mind started working at a frantic pace, a whirlwind of synapses preparing the deepest, most heartfelt apology ever, but, then, she noticed something everyone else had caught on before her: Levi. Even Erwin seemed unbothered by the tea bath he had just taken, as he looked at the new captain without blinking.Â
Levi was staring blindly at the floor beneath him, his hand frozen, holding the teacup directly in front of his face. His nostrils were dilated and the eyebrows were completely furrowed, but also⊠twitching? The captainâs lips moved as if he were trying to say something, but no words were coming out of his body.Â
âIs he ill?â Someone asked. The voice brought Hange back to the present.Â
âCaptain, are you okay?â Petra asked, concerned, then turned to look at the scientist âHange, I think you broke Levi.â
âWhat is happening?â Erwinâs question was not rhetorical.Â
Hange analyzed the captain for a moment, the ambiguity on his expression, all the twitching and trembling.
âI think he is⊠deciding?â
As if it recognized the cue, Leviâs expression melted into an audible giggle. A giggle! It was hoarse and higher pitched than Hange anticipated, but most of all, it was adorable. The sound disappeared as fast as it had come, leaving everyone agape.
âTch. That was disgusting, Four Eyes.â Levi said, with a small grin on his lips. âDo you know another one?â
â***
A few hours later, Erwin stopped by Hangeâs side as they refilled their jugs.
âInteresting technique,â the commander said, without looking at her.Â
âI guess you picked the right person for the jobâ Hange smirked, then suddenly remembered her question about Petra. âBy the way, did you assign this mission to anyone else?â
âNo, just to you. How did you know that that would work?â
âScienceâ Hange winked. Erwin let out an amused puff of air through his nose, then narrowed his eyes. âWas this also part of your plan?â the commander signaled at the brown stain on his shirt.
âOf course not. But I wish it was. That was genius!â The scientist laughed loudly, and the commander himself giggled.Â
âFair enoughâ Erwin responded, a light smirk still on his lips. âOn a completely unrelated note, Iâm assigning your squad to the toilet cleaning task for the rest of the monthâ
âOh, come on! I was just following your ordersâ Hange pleaded, but the commander remained silent. âOkay, fine. It was worth it, though.â The scientist said as she walked back to her table.Â
As Hange approached her comrades, Levi moved to make room for her on his bench. Erwin observed the quirky squad leader sit by the new captainâs side and smile at him as she said something. The commanderâs lips curled to a slight grin. It wouldnât be long before those two fools began to see what was already clear as day to him.Â

hi Kane! discovering your blog and works with delight and so glad you're taking requests! i love both eruri and levihan, but i had to choose so: hurt/comfort (angst, fluff and smut also very appreciated) where Hange stops what they're doing to hug/kiss a peevish Levi.
thank you âĄ
hiiiii victoria thank you!!!! :D i hope you like this though itâs a tad short, it has a lot of feelings :â)
//Levi/Hange, emotional hurt/comfort, fluff and kisses, canonverse (post-basement)
Hange looks up with a start when the floorboard their right creaks. Itâd been so quiet in their office, being the dead of night.
Of course, Levi stands there leaning against the doorway, arms crossed. He has an irritated frown on his face, but his bangs are combed back; heâs been running his hands through his hair.
Levi looks them up and down where they sit, retorting without speaking. Pajamas are for sleep, not work.
âSorry,â they sigh, and go to push their glasses up only to find theyâre not wearing them.
They covertly tuck a messy strand of hair behind their ear. Their messy bun doesnât hold up much.
âI wanted to check on the itinerary one last time. Weâll be living in the outside world for a few months.â
His lips press into a firm line. âYou and I did the same thing every day for the past week. Is my word not good enough?â
They put on a severe face of their own, and look at him more closely. If they had to guess, heâs rattled by something. The lines around his eyes are exhausted; he hasnât slept more than an hour per night in the last week, and each bit of free time has gone into exercising, even using the ODM gear which they wonât be needing on this expedition.
Not even Levi is immune to feeling nervous. And as Commander heâs relying on them not to be.
With a long but silent sigh, they push the itinerary awayâlong enough to pass as a short textbookâstand up, and switch off the lamp before walking over to him. A small sliver of moonlight illuminates their office, more or less. But as a result, Levi has the pallor of a corpse.
He still looks up at them a tad annoyed. Their hand hovers over his soft cheek, which he blinks slowly as he leans into the touch.
âYouâre right, Iâm sorry,â they state, and lean down, kissing him gently.
He grunts, and tilts his head, briefly deepening the kiss. They pull away at the same time.
âNow I can tell you that youâre as short as you are reliable.â
He scoffs, and looks away. At last, a bit of color rises to his cheeks. It looks like thereâs a dozen things he wants to say, but just one of them can be put into words.
âDonât vanish like that in the middle of the night.â
They put their hands on his waist. âDid you have a nightmare?â
He leans into them, simply turning the gesture into an embrace. He speaks quietly. âI⊠donât want to talk about it.â
They close him in their arms. His face dips to their shoulder as they slowly, and soothingly stroke his hair. âI wonât vanish. Letâs go back to bed.â

âOk, my turn! How did it go?âŠOh yeah: Up to my mouth, down through my gums, look out stomach, here it comes!â
Hange taps the shot glass of tequila down on the bar then brings it to their lips to gulp down. Their face contorts as they grab a lime to suck on.
âWahhh! Thatâs some strong stuff! You ladies sure know how to show someone a good time!â
The older women cackle and Levi crosses his arms.
Hange looks at him and slides a shot over his way. âCome onâŠare you gonna be a stick-in-the-mud this whole night?â
He scowls. âYes.â
âTake a shot with me!â
âNo.â
Hange rolls their eyes. âFine..I guess Iâll just have to drink for the both of us.â
Tap. Gulp.
Levi watches as Hange sucks on another lime. âRemind me why I agreed to go on this roadtrip with you?â
âBecause I needed someone to experience the open road with me. To be my adventure companion..â Hange puts an arm around Levi. â..and I needed a car.â They laugh.
âYou mean the car that is currently being towed to the only auto repair shop in this backwards-ass town?â
They slam their elbow on the bar and point ridiculously close to his face. âThatâs the one!â
Levi had never really been out of the city heâd been born and raised in. But being on this road trip with Hange taught him that there was a lot of NOTHING in between the two coasts: just small towns, corn fields, and cows.
Levi looks around at the dive bar strangely called, âHootenanniesâ. It seemed to be the only bar in town and was the only place open at this time of night. When they walked in, every eye was on them; Levi could tell that this was the kind of town where outsiders were instantly noticed, especially outsiders that looked like them.
The tattoos all over their arms, their ripped t-shirts and combat boots. They definitely stood out.
Most of the patrons were just old drunks who didnât care who they drank with, but some of the othersâŠ
âŠLevi could tell they did not want them there, and he was on alert.
Hange, on the other hand, was having the time of their lives.
âSo..why is this drink called, âThe Shotgun Weddingâ?â
The woman sitting next to Hange hands her the drink and laughs. âBecause once you drink that, someoneâs getting pregnant!â
Hangeâs eyes widen. âThat sounds inconvenient. Ah well, Iâll take my chances.â They down the drink and the bartender and women cheer, patting their back.
Suddenly Levi noticed a grizzled man stumble over to them.
âHeyâŠso just what ARE you anyway?â He leans his hand on Hangeâs barstool and Levi can smell the alcohol reeking off of him.
His presence doesnât phase Hange in the least. âI, sir, am someone who is about to order another Shotgun Wedding. One more, please!â
âNo..â his body moves closer to Hange and Levi sits up a little straighter, âI mean, are you a girl or boy or WHAT?â
Hange scoffs and then grabs their drink.
âWe donât like your kind here,â he yells.
âIt seems people like us just fine,â Hange turns to look at him, âyou just gotta give me a chance.â Then they plant a big, wet kiss on the manâs lips.
The man reacts by spinning Hangeâs chair around and raising his fist. In an instant, Levi is up and punches the man hard in the gut.
âHands off, motherfucker,â Levi threatens, both hands squeezed into fists.
The drunk manâs friends rush toward the bar, but Levi and Hange are able to dodge their fists easily. Hange gives one a right hook to his chin, and Levi takes on two of them. Eventually, theyâre all knocked out and sprawled along the dirty floor.
Levi grabs Hangeâs arm. âCome on, letâs get out of here before we piss more of them off.â
They bolt out of the door and run down the quiet street, turning into a darkened park to catch their breath.
âWooo! I havenât felt that alive in a long time! I forgot what a bad-ass you are, Levi!â Hange is jumping up and down amongst the trees and broken playground equipment.
Levi pushes them slightly. âYou idiot! You couldâve gotten hurt in there!â
âBut I didnât, because you were there.â
âAnd what if I hadnât been there, huh? What would you have done then?â
âAwwwâŠyou were worried about me..â
Hangeâs teasing riles Levi up even more. âBecause I love you, you dumbass!â
Hange just stands there, speechless. Levi canât believe he just said that out loud, but thereâs no turning back now.
âThat's why I always agree to your stupid ideas, like this roadtrip. I just⊠want to be with youâŠâ he huffs.
âLevi..â Hange says as they move closer. They cup Leviâs cheeks and his heart starts beating fast, then he leans in to kiss them. When they pull back, his cheeks are cherry-red.
Hange still has his face in their hands. âYouâre so cute when youâre flustered.â
Levi jerks his face back, embarrassed. âNever mind, forget what I said...â He starts walking down the street to their motel.
âNo take-backs!â Hange says as they put an arm around Levi.
