AU where Lincoln is one of the sky people and Octavia is a grounder?
This turned into part one of a multichapter thing. Crossposting on AO3 asĀ Let Light Shine Down.
There are too many of them, her brother says. The first group was bad enough, bunch of useless kids who havenāt really done much one way or another, but the secondĀ groupĀ is a variety andĀ thisĀ groupĀ is hellbent on survival. In retaliation, for starters, that means more patrols and observation runs, which Octavia volunteers for because sheās curious. People falling from the sky isnātĀ normal, and sheās not scared of them like most of her people are. If anything, this could be the most interesting thing thatās ever happened to her, and overprotective asshole brother be damned, sheās going to get details.
Her first few runs, she just observes, doesnāt see anything worth mentioning. The device they use to subdue people - she knows thereās a technical name for it but sheĀ canāt remember - is rather terrifying, but she doesnāt get close enough to see how it works. Doesnāt get close enough for anyone to see her at all, either. The sky people have weapons, and she doubts the fact that sheās young and tiny will do her any favors with them. She has kill marks on her skin, not a lotĀ but a respectable number for her age and status, and that alone makes her a threat to them. Oh how silly they are.
Her fourth run is when things get interesting. Sheās up in a tree as per usual, comfortable and almost bored, when she sees a lone figure leave the main camp. Heās not carrying one of their weapons, she notes, and slips between a gap in the fence, implying heās not supposed to be out at all. Well then. The others sheās seen were clearly guards, in pairs or trios mostly, armored and armed. This one is almost innocent by comparison, and from her distance, she decides he might be nice to look at too. Not that sheās especially concerned with that, but eighteen is a perfectly acceptable age to take a mate and none of the people she knows are all that interesting on that front.Ā Well, maybe this could solve aĀ lot of problems.
When she figures heās close enough to be sufficiently freaked out by the display, she jumps down from the tree - and, because today isĀ clearly not her day, lands rather nastily. So, itās not the sudden appearance of a girl that catches his attention, itās her scream of pain because fuck tolerances, her ankleĀ hurts and she is not looking forward to explaining this to anyone, assuming she even gets backā¦
āAre you alright?ā
She likes his voice, she decides, clear and calm and non-threatening. Heās not looking at her like a curiosity; if anything, heās concerned. āNo,ā she hisses, figuring that starting out by lying is not a good plan - and hell, itās obvious she isnāt even if her words say otherwise.
āThat was quite a jump.ā
āIāve done higher ones fine. I was just⦠distracted, I guess.ā
If he knows he hasĀ anything to do with that problem, he doesnāt let on. āIs there somewhere safe you can get to?ā
Might as well continue this whole not-lying-to-strange-pretty-person thing. āEasily, no.ā
He looks her up and down, assessing. āWhat are you going to do?ā
āWait. If I donāt come back in a few hours, someone else will be sent to make sure nothing got me.ā
He doesnāt say anything for a few moments, just looks at her like heās trying to find a better solution, any solution. āAre you sure?ā
āWhy do you care?ā she counters, more out of habit than anything else. āThought your lot hated people like me. If somethingĀ did get me, wouldnāt that be alright?ā
She mustāve implied something she didnāt consciously mean, because suddenly he looks worried and a little defensive. āI donāt hate you.ā
"You donātĀ know me.ā Which is just as well, she thinks, because most of the people whoĀ do know her think sheās unpredictable and too emotional and those are just the descriptors theyāre comfortable using to her face. āWhat makes you so sure Iām not going to kill you?ā
"You havenāt tried yet.ā
Good point. āAre you going to tell anyone about me?ā
āAnd tell them I found a way out?ā He rolls his eyes - pretty eyes, she notices, dark like night sky. āBetter if I donāt. For both of us.ā
āSo youāre going to come out here again?ā Her intentions are innocent, she swears, and yet she canāt help thinking itās a really good thing that sheās still visibly in pain, back against that damn tree because sheās not sure she can comfortably stand on her own and sheās not sure she wants to find out the hard way either. She looks⦠well, about as vulnerable as she ever will. That has to work in her favor, right?
āIf I can.ā
āGood.ā Then, because sheās feeling a little impulsive - āIf they ever let me out again, Iāll find you.ā
āDeal.ā
Sheāll see him again, she decides as he walks away. Sheās not sure why, but she has a certain feeling about this nameless man that is completely separate from the world he represents. HeĀ saw her, the sword on her back and badly smudged eyeliner and the vulnerabilities sheās taught herself to ignore because itās easier that way, and he wasnāt scared. He didnāt try to hurt her, nor did he run. He was kind to her. The rest of his people are still a mystery to her, but this one⦠this one she likes.
