ok now that ive finished angel season 4 i want to hear some of your thoughts on it……i really disliked a lot of it but i really liked the stuff with jasmine. and i feel like they finally started to do some interesting things with fred. though of course, the season is weaker for the way it sidelines cordelia. if i hadn’t known about the behind the scenes animosity and bullying, i would have been so confused by that. one episode i really loved is the one where angel lives out his happy fantasy reality and then becomes angelus. the happy fantasy aspect sort of foreshadows the jasmine stuff, now that i think about it……
jasmine is rly good like rly rly good.......ultimately my thing with ats s4 is that i don't think it's a bad story i think it's a good story that they told really really badly. the CONCEPT of cordelia getting possessed by a former PTB who is disillusioned and thinks humanity needs saving is actually so fire it's just executed in such a foul and misogynistic way that deprives cordelia of her voice and encourages us + the characters to blame a woman for her own rape for at least 6 episodes. also angel losing his soul is like the chekov's gun of ats, it needed to happen, but angelus is such a flop in s4!! he doesn't do anything!!!! also joss did not tell charisma cordelia was possessed so she can't play the character properly until "calvary." (luckily charisma took her role really seriously, per alexis denisof moreso than anyone on set, so she does play cordelia differently starting with 4x07 because she's trying to play a version of cordelia who would do those things.)
also like i enjoy faith's return but they also kind of waste her. and "orpheus" is like. show-ruining. why are we pretending angel and angelus are different people. and gunn is like nowhere to be found this season except when they have him accidentally hit fred in "soulless" after fighting over her with wesley (awesome racism and misogyny guys). URGHH.
but then the jasmine arc goes so hard!!! and actually ties in with cordelia's arc really well bc cordelia's arc is that of a humanistic christ figure, a human who ascends to sainthood/godhood, meanwhile jasmine is more literally like the myth of christ in that she is a god who comes down to earth to save humanity except that her methods are evil and she eats people, and she pretends to be cordelia (a la the antichrist pretending to be jesus's second coming).
also lilah is there and i love lilah and this is her best season for sure. and weslah is there and weslah is so good...there's a dollar bill in your pocket that says otherwise!!!!! and i actually quite like connor, i don't think he's always served very well by the writing but he's lowkey rly funny lol. ALSO the darla/jasminedelia scene in "inside out" is CRAZYYY like waow.....a good scene? in my s4? it's more likely than you think...
anyway in MYY version of s4 we would hear from cordelia and the beast would actually be an aspect of her who is trying to defeat jasmine. you can read some of my notes here on that idea. also this is just a thought on ats as a whole but i think s4 especially would've been dramatically improved if alonna gunn were still there. ummm yeah...lmk if there's any more specific things you want my thoughts on bc i could truly talk about s4 forever it has dogged my every step since 20 fucking 12 if you can believe it ._.
