Marisha Ray, Keyleth's player, was the youngest person at the table and was, like, CONSTANTLY dogpiled for Keyleth's actions, leading a LOT of people to be mad about Keyleth in general. She was a naive, insecure character who grew and changed, and a lot of the writing changes in The Legend of Vox Machina have made this arc clearer. I've seen some people still be mad about Keyleth in TLoVM, but nowhere NEAR as bad as it was in 2015-16. All her decisions made sense for the character, but since Marisha wasn't, like, minmaxing or metagaming, a lot of people were like "why would Keyleth do this, is she stupid??"
She's finding her way in the world!! She's doing her best!!! She's incredibly powerful and really comes into her own as the story goes on. There's only a couple episodes of TLoVM Season 4 out right now but the sheer difference in her confidence versus insecurity from Season 1 to 4 is incredible.
When Critical Role first aired, a lot of fans said she was annoying or criticized the choices she made. People also brought up small mistakes she made more often than they would for male characters .If she made a mistake it was the worst thing ever but if a male character made the same mistake it wasn't even mentioned
I think she's really cool! She actually had an arc about overcoming insecurities and criticism, which is ironic given fan behavior but did result in arguably the most thematically interesting dragon fight we got to see
It's totally okay if you don't want to include her because a lot of the hate towards her also goes directly towards the person playing her being "too new to dnd" or "not nerdy enough". That being said: A lot of people think Keyleth is childish or annoying, when really that's the point of the character. She's been thrown into a position of leadership way sooner than she should've been. Her people live for hundreds of years, she's still an awkward teen within her society.
Druids are awesome. Nature magic is awesome. She's a wholesome little bean until she gets truly pissed off. Is a cinnamon roll that could kill you. And everyone in critical role is the epitome of poly panic. (Maybe not in canon but in our hearts)
Iris West:
Fandom calls her a bitch and annoying for daring to challenge Barry and to be his love interest while being a black woman.
She is sweet but doesn't take shit from her father or love interest and she is a great journalist and a terrible cook (iconic).

For quite a while she was seen as perfect bean. When the big reveal happen then she wast just seen as evil dictator abuser who lied to everyone. Also was seen very weirdly in very extreme ways as a body positivity icon.
She was an amazingly complex character who lived a very difficult life but the fandom couldn't handle such a gray character. I love her and thinks she deserve the recognition of being one the best written characters by Rebecca Sugar instead of cringe.
Oh wah wah she used to be an evil dictator who colonised other planets and on an interpersonal level treated almost everyone in her life badly. sorry you can't stand to see a girlboss winning.
For a character who's already dead at the start of the show and who we only ever see through flashbacks, Rose manages to be one of the most fascinating, dynamic, and complex characters in the whole show. It's so interesting getting to dig into her worldview and how her backstory impacted her, and her early appearances are made even more fascinating on rewatch, when they're recontextualised by the twist of her actually being Pink Diamond. Which, by the way, I do think is one of the all time great TV twists - the kind of perfect twist that catches you completely off guard in the moment but in hindsight you realise was obvious all along

C) he needed to be ghosted for character development. She did him a favor.
She's trying her best okay! Her mom has Alzheimer's and then dies. Her ex was really shitty to her and also gay and not attracted to her (I don't think she knew about that part though) and also 8 years from now he's going to date her younger man boytoy which is probably going to be super weird for her if she ever finds out. And on top of all that, her job involves listening to people die over the phone. God forbid she have a midlife crisis and have a fling with a hot younger man about it.
Fandom hates her for her treatment of her male love interest.
She was a main character in s1, but then the actress left. She gave the show it's voice, literally. She had its opening narration. As The main character at dispatch, she was the heartbeat of the show in s1. Sure, she didn't love Buck the same way he loved her. She was having fun and feeling youthful because she had him in her life, but he was In Love. Sad for him, but she didn't do anything wrong? And sure she ghosted him, but she didn't ask him to wait for her. And in her defense, these things just happen sometimes. She deserves to appreciated for what she brought to the show, including as Buck's first serious relationship, and her imperfectness as a human shouldn't be disqualifying.

Has been called abusive for fairly banal mistakes so as to make other love interests appear morally superior. Often has her struggles swept to the side in favor of having her emotionally support other (often male) characters.
She is the best character on the show. She is a time traveling angel who saved the multiverse. She fed the tears the virgin Mary shed at the crucifixion to the devil. She's a union woman. She's kept a maple preserved corpse in her back room for days. She' seen the man she loves die at least 1,384 times. She's so so awesome guys. Best character of all time.

everyone saying “she’s got a point” is similarly participating in a sort of undeserved literary snobbery that belies any actual understanding of the function and popular reception of the novel as a form since its inception.
I am saying this as someone who has never once picked up a “popular on booktok” canva art romance novel, and rarely reads any 21st century literature at all—who finds a lot of contemporary anglophone lit to be banal, obnoxious, and utterly tedious. I couldn’t care less about the artistic merits of fanfiction as “legitimate literature” either way, and I find the “character-first” approach to storytelling most people in fandom circles employ to be reductive and a bit exhausting…
if you seriously think that the kinds of people writing gay fanfiction on ao3 about the main characters from a mainstream hollywood production are the same kinds of people who would otherwise be experimenting with the form of the novel in artistically groundbreaking ways, then I really don’t know what to tell you. and if you think the phenomenon of novels being written for the emotional (and sexual) gratification of women being derided as a perversion of an otherwise elite artform is a new phenomenon that sprung up within the past decade, then you obviously don’t know enough about the history of literature to be making these kinds of claims with such dismissive arrogance.
the form of the novel, especially novels by women, especially novels by women for women involving romance, have long been trivialized in the popular consciousness for lacking the kind of artistic merit that disqualifies it from being considered “real literature.” whether such novels are artistically lacking or not is entirely subjective and beside the point. claiming that popular entertainment primarily produced and enjoyed by women and girls has rotted their brains and debased their potential intellectual engagement with “higher” artforms is a notion repeated by every generation, and it’s equally ridiculous every time! least of all because there are still plenty of women in the world who care about the craft of literature and artistic experimentation within the form of the novel. and some of them even like fanfiction, also.

I mean, the entire hysteria around her first movie was ugly and misogynistic as hell. She (and Brie Larson by extension) was called rude, ugly and many other epithets like such. The character was once again too confident and strong and not in need of any man for their liking. She's called a Mary Sue, she was blamed for ruining the MCU. When a cut scene of her breaking a guy's arm for telling her to smile resurfaced, it got worse.
"Strong women don't have to be like this" and yet what if some of them are like this? What if I tell you they should've kept the arm-breaking scene in the movie? What if I tell you she's confident, and snarky, and strong, and so lonely, and so immediately loving towards her found and then lost family even if she doesn't remember them? Carol is dorky and awesome and also did you know that in the book that Mustang she rides is so beat and old the door doesn't open and she has to climb in and out through a window? I love characters like that.
Utena Tenjou:
Fandom blames her for being groomed by an adult man and acts like she is stupid for not realizing he is grooming her and abusing his sister even though both of them are hiding it from her.
Utena may be naive but her naivete can be a strength as well as a flaw because it allows her to see through the misogynistic narratives perpetuated by Akio and to see Anthy as a normal girl who needs a friend. Also she is good at basketball 🏀 yay.
